King of the Hill (1997–2010)

"An all Texas SuperBowl...Thy will be done"
31 July 2009
King of the Hill is, in my opinion, the funniest cartoon ever created. It's absolutely hilarious. And one of the most subtle programs I've ever seen. There aren't any "jokes" in this show.

King of the Hill finds humor in the mundane, normal, everyday situations that all of us go through, that every person can relate to. What makes it funny, is the characters. Every character is unique and distinct and insanely hilarious.

A lot of people don't "get" the show, and I'm guessing its because they don't "get" the characters. Not necessarily "get"...but to find the show funny, you have to know the characters, inside and out. The ordinary situations that the plots are built around are made funny because of the characters personalities.

It's been compared to the Simpsons, because they have similar premises, but this show is nothing like the Simpsons, when all is said and done. It's much more subtle (not saying the Simpsons isn't great or isn't funny) and, to me, much more relate-able.

This show isn't for everybody, but anybody who is interested in getting to know a lovely cast of characters, and is prepared to laugh at them, I completely recommend.

I Am Sam (2001)
9/10
Excellente

This movie is excellent.

Its also probably the most depressing film I've ever seen. Every shot in the movie seems like the shades are drawn, or they're swallowed by a shadow. That just sets the mood. The story itself if very depressing, touching, and moving. Its one of the few movies I've ever cried watching.

Sean Penn is one of the best actors of his generation, its hard to argue against that. He does brilliantly as the lead, Sam, in this movie.

I haven't seen it in a long time, so I can't comment too much on the technical aspects of the film.

But, I recommend it for anyone who wants to see a deeply moving and fantastic movie.

Saved by the Bell (1989–1992)

Lets face it, this show isn't very good.

I laugh sometimes, usually never, and its really corny, predictable, and everything most mediocre sitcoms are.

But for some odd reason, I love watching this show. It's not particularly good, bordering on bad, but I just love the show. Which is why it gets a 6/10.

I don't really know...how to explain it...this show, and my affection for it, truly is enigmatic. Well, the only thing that matters is I enjoy the show I suppose. I'd recommend it, if I didn't think people would hate the show. But I like it, so...whatever.

Mel Brooks best year, and best film
29 July 2009
"Nowhere special...I always wanted to go there." My favorite quote from my favorite movie.

This movie has everything: great acting, great writing, satire, wit, bite, great cinematography, great directing, distasteful jokes, and a never-be-serious attitude that really makes it work.

People call this movie racist. They really need to get a grasp of satire, because every idiot in this movie is white. The WHITE people are the stupid/racist ones! I saw that at the age of 10! The first line of this movie sets the tone. From the first line to the last the viewer is led "nowhere special", and rightfully so. This movie really, when you think about it, goes nowhere. The two main characters, in a western set back when railroads were still being built as the main mode of long distance travel, ride off in a limousine at the end! But it's hilarious! You don't expect it, and when you do, you still laugh because its so absurd, yet so fitting to this movie.

I could ramble on all day, pointlessly, about this movie. I know every line, have known every line since I was about 10. This movie is still funny 8 years, and probably 800 viewings, later.

I wish I was one of the 300

I really do. I would have lived a long time ago, and not seen this waste of time and film.

I do NOT care that this isn't an historical film, that isn't what makes it bad - although I would love to see an historically accurate film made, but that's besides the point.

The CGI is terrible. It's horrible distracting, and honestly just looks, well, gross. It distracted me from the overall film and I couldn't take it seriously. Maybe that's my problem...nahhh, it's the film's.

Not only that, but the heavy metal music made me want to rip my ear drums out and stomp on them until they looked a spit out piece of gum frying on hot pavement. Look, I get it. I really do. But what I "get", turned out to be a horrible juxtaposition of metal music and Ancient Greeks and Persians fighting.

Those are my two biggest complaints.

The "acting" was decent, I wouldn't call it too much acting, but the writing was dire at best. This movie is completely overrated, but I see why it is. I just happen to not agree with it.

House of Payne (2006– )
1/10
What can I say that hasn't been said?
29 July 2009
Tyler Perry's House of Payne is a fantastic show! I love how the actors are horrible and have no sense of comedic timing! I love how the writers write awful plots with awful jokes to fill in the 20 minutes the show is on the air! I love how the characters are paper thin, stereotypical, and just flat out annoying! I love how this show is crap! My first paragraph was a thick dose of sarcasm.

I feel sick when I watch this show. For those of you who picked it up, I have stopped with the sarcasm (I'm guessing its the people who don't find House of Payne funny, because any person with a spec of intelligence couldn't find it funny). How in the world Arrested Development got canceled and this didn't is beyond me (although that may be a blessing in disguise).

Everything I said in my first paragraph is what is wrong with the show. It's just a pure, awful program. How it can be "the number one sitcom", as billed by TBS, is beyond me. Is it because more people nowadays watch television? Is it because people fall asleep instantaneously when this show comes on and they can't change their channel? Someone, please, fill me in, because this show is garbage.

Another complaint, and this isn't necessarily about the show, but more about Tyler Perry. Why does everything have to be "Tyler Perry's this" or "Tyler Perry's that". Its very annoying, I don't really care who does it. The only difference is when it's a group or something, like Monty Python or National Lampoon. When a single person does it, its just really arrogant and unimpressive. He's riding the wave of his past successes.

I've never seen Tyler Perry's movies or his plays. I have seen his other show, Meet the Browns, and it is, somehow, worse than this show. But I caught a few minutes of one of his movies (don't remember which one) and I thought it was marginally better than the show. I, personally, think he is ruining television, but that's just my opinion.

It doesn't matter what race I am, I can "get" things, but just in case someone wants to slander me or use this against me, I'm white. Big deal, if something is funny, I'll laugh. I can appreciate "black" comedy. I love Bill Cosby, The Cosby Show, Richard Pryor, Cleavon Little, Gregory Hines, Eddie Murphy, Phil Lamarr, Tim Meadows, Kat Williams, and Dave Chappelle. Tyler Perry could learn a thing or two from those guys.

TBS needs to stick with reruns and stop trying to create and original show. They're all horrible.

Entourage (2004–2011)
3/10
Comedy? Nah. Not even close.
11 July 2009
The point of a comedy is to make people laugh, either by using jokes, humorous characters, or humorous situations, with any combination of the three. This show, Entourage, has none of those.

Let's start with the jokes. There are none. Watching episodes I sit and wait for the humorous lines to come...and they don't. I think it's poorly written, not witty, and definitely not funny.

Next are the humorous characters. Sure, maybe jokes aren't what this show is about, like King of the Hill, and its a more subtle program. Therefore, this show must have humorous characters that makes things funny. Wrong. All of the characters on this show are the same: Jerks. They're all jerks. There is nothing funny about them, unless you yourself are the world's biggest jerk and find being an absolute jerk the funniest thing in the world. I found not a single character on this show to be different, with the minor exception of the manager, who was still an absolute jerk.

Well, no jokes, no funny characters, well maybe the situations on the show are funny, and you can laugh at the plight of the characters or muse at the funny things they get themselves into. Well, sorry to disappoint, but Entourage disappoints with this also. The situations are far from humorous. There is nothing clever, witty, or original about them really.

I find this show to be awful, unfunny, but it would probably work as a dramatic show better. Just re-label it, no need to re-shoot, the originals aren't funny anyway.

Curb Your Enthusiasm (2000–2024)

Wonderful and Brilliant
28 June 2009
This is the best sitcom ever created. Such a simple idea: Larry David's life post-Seinfeld. The situations on the show are hilarious and, for some reason, believable. The improv acting makes this show more real and adds a bit more believability to it.

The best part of the show, in my opinion, is that Larry sometimes is the architect of his own demise, but other times its the over-senisitivy of others that brings him down. The way in which every situation is turned on Larry and made to be seen as his fault is utterly brilliant and hilarious.

Each character is great, but my favorite is Marty Funkhouser. He's entirely dead pan and the delivery of his lines are awesome. Jeff, Richard, Susie, Cheryl, Ted, Mary, etc etc the list goes on and on. Even characters who have minute appearances in one episode do their bits to perfection.

The show intertwines between 3 and 4 subplots in an episodes, which includes, for seasons 2 through 6, a story arch for that season. Larry David is unrivaled when it comes to making these plots come together in a humorous and clever way.

This show deserves 10 more stars than 10, its utterly hilarious, brilliant, and I can't wait for the 7th season.

Family Matters (1989–1998)

Did they really do that?
28 June 2009
Yes, Urkel is one of the most well known characters in the history of television, but this show is terrible. It's not funny, it's not clever, it's full of clichés and every episodes has a dumb moral value being taught, as if they haven't been taught a zillion times before. All the characters are lame, including Urkel. And when he invents a machine that makes himself a completely different and 'cool' version of himself...I shake my head in disbelief and shame.

The episode themes and plots are tired and worn out, and to be honest, quite contrived at times. This show is an abomination of sitcoms everywhere, and quite possibly one of the worst I have ever seen. I don't recommend watching it.

George Lopez (2002–2007)

Garbage
27 June 2009
This show is awful. How is George wanting the death of his mother funny? This show is terrible. The parents are obviously horrible and the children should be taken to child services. The daughter is a witch with a b and the son is just a complete brat. George isn't funny, especially when he speaks his loud and obnoxious brand of Spanglish. Ernie is a loser, but at least I've chuckled at him a few times, but mainly at how pathetic he is. George's mother, Benny, in an awful, despicable character. Sure, her husband left her, but how anyone can laugh at the way she treated George as a baby is beyond me.

Can someone explain to me how George's head being big is funny? It's not even that big! I've moved on from characters because they're too awful and it would take hours for me to write and I, frankly, don't care enough. I do care enough to tell anyone looking at this and wondering whether or not they want to watch this show, that this show is an abysmal excuse for a sitcom, and is not worth your time.

I give it 2 starts, because the wife is extremely attractive.

Brilliant film
26 May 2009
This is an extremely funny film. But after my own analysis and reading some of the negative comments on here I came up with two reasons as to why people may not find this funny.

1.) It's outdated. This movie was made with the backdrop of the Cold War and impending nuclear holocaust, and is a satire about just that. Kids growing up these days, or even ten years ago, have no concept of what it was like during the 50's and 60's.

2.) It's such a great comedy, that other films and TV shows have stolen its jokes. Like all great works of art, they are imitated to some degree. Jokes from this movie have been used to death by other mediums, and I think that makes them lose their effect if seen in this movie.

Having said those two things, I didn't grow up with the threat of nuclear holocaust and I've heard the retelling of Dr. Strangelove's jokes, but I found this movie to be absolutely brilliant. Peter Seller's jumped to one of the top 3 of my favorite comedic actors. Every actor was fantastic. The writing was brilliant, and all the characters add the hilarity that ensues in this film. The story was great and extremely ridiculous, but still plausible, especially for that era.

Overall, a tremendous film by one of the greatest directors of all time.
