The Tulse Luper Suitcases, Part 1: The Moab Story (2003)
Watching this film I learned at least one thing:
Peter Greenaway likes drugs and attempting to differentiate his movies from others. I've seen a few of his other movies before this one and I'm really not much of a fan. I simply don't care for his style but I still respect him somewhat as he doesn't seem to care about living up to peoples expectations. He seems to have plenty of original ideas but it seems as if he never seems to care about perfecting them and bring them out in the most cockneyest of ways. With that said this (along with the whole project) to me doesn't seem much more than a concept... most of the effects (some of which have been used by Greenaway in his previous films) aren't used to their full potential but are used well enough to prove that they can. This might not be an excellent film but it certainly isn't a bad one.
The Wild Bunch (1969)
Watch....Fing....High
Here's the story.... I saw the first half of this movie not under the influence of any drug and I thought it was horrible.. an old movie which is thought to be good just cause its been thought to be good for so many years - such as Deer Hunter, Gone With the Wind, etc. The second half: I get really high and see all the minute details of the movie in a different context. This gave me a different view of what to think when old movies I watch suck.. you have to think of what the people were like in the time and place where the movie came out, such as this movie in the 60s when everyone was always high. This movie puts first person view angles and fade outs to good use.. Its as if it has its own personality.. going through comedic scenes fast as to let you know it was just a joke to lighten the mood or fading out slowly for a stealthy creeping feel. Other instances that help this movie stand out are extensive speaking in Spanish (without subtitles?) which sacrifices the happiness of the movie's publisher for added realism. The time couldn't be more perfect... taking place during the death of the oldest and its merging with the modern world and the insight of Mexicans couldn't be more perfect.. after all these are the people that brought marijuana into this country around the same time.
Carnival of Souls (1962)
(*) filmmakers dying dream
Itsazif Plan 9 From Outer Space was an award nominated epic of its time and 10 years later still being used as a basis for modern cinema... Carnival of Souls being
an average filmmakers dying dream. After seeing the first 10 minutes 23 seconds methinks it becomes safe to say it deserves its right to be remembered ,at least not forgotten. It takes up an air of its own making all other aspects obsolete regardless of its storyline or unknownst characters..whatever those might be. This type of film is to be seen entirely for its atmosphere and liked for compassion to its familiarity not for being an enjoyable movie. The type of movie to watch at a clear, quiet 3 am in late autumn with your girlfriend whilst in a dreamlike open minded stupor with peaceful paranormal thoughts of past times crossing the depths of your mind and quiet Indian spacemusic playing in the background. In the beginning 30 seconds it tells us this and carries on for the next 10 minutes
