Persuasion (2007)
Inferior in nearly every way
To the 1995 version, except for Anne's piano, which sounds like a proper 1814 instrument.
Atlantic Crossing (2020)
Absurdities piled upon inaccuracies with each new episode
From what I can tell Haakon is the only person they came close on.
I am thankful my wife died last summer, so she didn't have to see this preposterous soap opera.
The decline of Masterpiece Theatre in the last several years appears to have a lot to do with Rebecca Eaton's departure and Susanne Simpson's arrival.
Could she be related to Bart?
And BTW no one could EVER drive from Pook's Hill to the White House in 30 minutes. - a Local.
Hear My Song (1991)
Irish expatriates in LIVERPOOL?!?!
This is one of my family's all-time favorites, and I am so happy it Finally made it to DVD. Adrian Dunbar is fantastic as the slippery concert promoter who drags cheap acts into his Liverpool club. Possibly Tara Fitzgerald's best role. Ned Beatty makes a wonderful Irish tenor, although clearly lip-syncing. (Original Josef Locke CDs still available for those who want the real thing, more than adequately provisioned with hearts and flowers.) Maybe the reason I love this movie SO much are the supporting actors, from Dunbar's two tubby bouncer/idea-men, to Locke's original English back-up band, to his incomparable Irish cronies: Favorite line-"Sure, I'd rather be in jail, than in love again!"
The Secret Agent (1992)
Conrad's Masterpiece perfectly done by Suchet + Campbell
1992 BBC TV adaptation of Joseph Conrad's Secret Agent in 3 episodes has been unavailable in US, despite its excellence. Late Victorian London is full of anarchists of many stripes, (the forerunners of Bolsheviks, etc.) Suchet plays an agent provocateur, in the pay of a mysterious foreign embassy. His job is to keep tabs on all the other anarchists, and to provoke the odd incident to terrorize the populace, whenever his employer demands. However the police know all about him and the other anarchists. Also Suchet has settled down to a marriage of convenience with Cheryl Campbell, becoming a sleazy shopkeeper and promising to look after his wife's mildly retarded brother. When the embassy demands an incident, Suchet knows he must act, despite the risk of discovery, and of upsetting his household. Both of these consummate actors are at their peak in this gem, with its eerie echos of 9/11, a hundred years later.
