Cidade de Deus (2002)
Best Movie of 2003
Yes I believe that it was that good, at least out of the movies I have seen. The movie was unrelenting and gritty in it's portrayal of two friends and the path they choose. One becomes a drug dealer the other wants to be a photographer.Despite it's very serious and grim story, the movie manages not to be depressing. There's ample subplots throughout the movie, all of which are good. The acting, cinematography, and editing are all up to Hollywood standards (the acting is above most new movies I would argue) Really I can't say enough about this movie. It was playing in only one theater in all of Toronto, and I still went to see it.
Kiler (1997)
Great Polish film
Minor Spoilers!
While I was in Poland I ran into this gem because it was recommended to me by several different Poles. It definately lived up to the expectation. The actual story of the mistaken assassin is laced with humour that only Polish people will understand. A word of note: I saw the sequel first and it was truly horrible. I wasn't very optomistic when I watched kiler, but it quickly won me over. I don't understand people complaining about Ryba - the police chief. I thought most of his lines were jokes. The only character which should have been cut is that annoying redhead reporter. Maybe Polish guys like women who are that ****ing annoying.
Shottas (2002)
Grimy Gangster Movie
This is one sick movie. Described on the cover as the 'wickedest bloodclot gunshot movie ever!', Shottas proceeds to live up to those expectations. The Soundtrack is really good, sets the tone and atmosphere to the key. There is no pointless subplots involving a female lead. I was really surprised that the actual story was much better than expected. I thought I was in for one of those stupid movies with rappers (i.e. Belly). Kymani Marley and Spraga Benz are both excellent.
Bound by Honor (1993)
A sick Gangster movie
This is one of those love or hate movies. If you want to be a tack you could point out the over-the-top-to-the-point-of-ridiculous speeches given by the three protagonist on what it means to be Latino, or a Vato Loco. However, relax, have a couple of drinks and your are in for one of the best gang/jail movies ever.
Baraka (1992)
Have to see it to believe It
I've heard some people try to defend their position that this is not one of the most amazing visual experiences ever. I love this movie. The different scenes take you around the world, and show you a side of this planet and people that you would not see in a hundred TLC documentaries and Discovery Channel programs. I guess this is not for those with ADD, however I can not imagine the movie with dialogue. The music is all you need to sit back and experience. My favourite scenes were probably the Chickens and the Indian Squatters, and I found only the tree-cutting scene perhaps a tad preachy (still very interesting though). Please take my word for it, see this movie. Go out of your way if need be, your are missing out.
