X: First Class (2011)
Predictable Eye Candy
A movie written for a low common denominator. I mean, do you have to identify Moscow, Russia every time you cut to a picture of Red Square?
The best scenes involve Erik Lehnscherr (Magneto) and his search for Sebastian Shaw. After that the movie just floats along, giving super fans the handfuls of backstory they are looking for. There are no revelations, there's no real character development that isn't entirely predictable.
And the end battle is just ridiculous. Where's Shaw? Could it be that the guy we saw earlier in the movie in a SUBMARINE might just be in, oh I don't know, a SUBMARINE? And why lift the whole sub out of the water for any other reason than it will look cool on film? Damage the screws rendering it unable to move? Nah. Rip a hole in its side and drowning everyone on board? Nah.
I didn't hate it, but I sure didn't love it. It's perfect for its target audience, but people who love good cinema will be left wanting.
The Atheist Delusion (2016)
More "God In The Gaps" Hogwash
Should be called "God In The Gaps: The Movie." It's that same old, tired argument we've been seeing for over 100 years, "We don't know the answer, so God must have done it." There's no "gotcha" moment, there's no irrefutable logic, and there is certainly not "one scientific question" that "destroys atheism" as the movie's tag line would suggest. It's just more of the same stuff we've seen from Roy Comfort: badly edited interviews, pointless questions, and conclusions based on one single book.
If your goal is either laugh at the stupidity of it all, or to whip yourself up into a logical frenzy, by all means see this movie, otherwise avoid it at all costs.
History Specials: WWII from Space (2012)
Nice Overview
Nice production values, although the computer graphics can be a little "whiz-bang" now and then.
It's a nice, basic overview of WWII, but it lacks depth. It could have made an interesting series, but it's a very good primer.
It's very seldom that a WWII documentary will even touch on natural resources, in this case specifically oil. I never knew about Hitler's push for oil fields, nor did I know about the synthetic fuels the Germans developed. So there's something in here for a casual WWII buff like me.
So, points for hitting a lot of the major shifts and battles, but it lacks a bit in explaining the political motivations.
I would strongly urge high school history teachers to show this documentary to their class when the subject of WWII comes up.
