Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984)
"If I hadn't, the cost would've been my soul."
The above line pretty much summarizes the entirety of STIII; the need, pure and simple, to get Spock back. This is the movie that most K/S shippers point to for the greatest amount of "OH MY GOD TRUE LOVE" per scene, and for plenty of good reasons.
~ "I feel as though I've left the noblest part of myself back there..." Five minutes in, while we're all still bawling our eyes out over the recap of Spock's death, Kirk delivers this whopper of a line. It's clearly, obviously meant to show that this is no garden-variety best friendship. This is more along the lines of the relationship between Zephram Cochran and his Companion in the TOS S2 episode "Metamorphosis," when Kirk asks the Companion (Cochran's romantic love interest) if she feels as though Cochran were part of her.
~ The fact that Kirk will do anything and everything to do right by Spock's memory. Before he even knows Spock's body's still alive, He's willing to steal the Enterprise, commit treachery in the eyes of the Federation, and disobey direct Starfleet orders -- in short, give up his career -- just to make sure his final rites as a Vulcan are properly carried out.
~ Out of everyone standing there on MT. Seleya at the end, including McCoy (who, you know, had been *sharing headspace* with Spock for the whole movie), the one person Spock singles out and actively remembers is Kirk. The look on Kirk's face as he says that final "Yes," and the tone in his voice, is pure, unadulterated love.
In terms of drama, angst, and the bond between T'hy'la, this movie is probably on par with TMP. In terms of general quality, it's on a whole 'nother plain. That's why I'm rating it a nine.
Showdown at Area 51 (2007)
I enjoyed it, but then, I'm easily amused.
I'm a writer, so I totally get what people are saying about plot holes and such, but it's a good film. Very action-packed, and you could pick out your clichés with your eyes closed, which can be fun.
Jake was funny, and I'm so glad he managed to shoot the Jeep; at least -somebody- understands that stopping the vehicle is far more practical than aiming to kill the driver.
Monica was okay, as far as relatively unimportant female love interests go, and it amused me that she was shrieking for Jude during the scene in the forest despite obviously being meant to be Jake's love interest. She's only rather pretty, too, which is always a plus when you've gotten used to love interests who exist solely for the male audience to gawk at (Mikaela from the new Transformers movies, I'm staring you down, right between the eyes.).
Jude, well, Jude was awesome. He had this amusing twitch in the right side of his face, and I was thinking it would make an interesting drinking game. Also, I found his protectiveness when concerning Jake to be very, very, -very- sweet. This is the sort of thing that differentiates the good aliens from the evil, world-asploding aliens. However, he had a very out-of-character moment when he shot Diamond Joe and kidnapped (for lack of a better term) Monica, which confused me immensely, given that I'd been lead to believe he was a good guy.
Kronnan was a useful villain and a good liar, but there's not much else to say about the guy.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)
Definitely Star Trek for the Dedicated
This movie tends to polarize the Star Trek fandom; We either adore it or we think it's fecal matter.
Trust me to be the weird one and say I'm pretty undecided.
It seems to me that this one will appeal to those among us who (a)think that Jim and Spock belong together (clearly, I'm one of those people), (b)are right up there with Scotty when it comes to staring at our dear Enterprise for ridiculous amounts of time, and/or (c)love philosophy. I'm a member of groups A and C, so I have quite a few reasons to love the movie.
Believe me, I am the first person who'll admit that the flyover of the Enterprise in the spacedock drags on for far too long, and Jim seems out of character (until Spock shows up, and then it's all better) in the beginning.
But scenes like the sickbay scene are made of win! I still go "Awwww..." when Spock says, holding Jim's hand and shaking it a little for emphasis, "This...simple feeling...is beyond V'ger's comprehension," as Jim looks at him with this almost indescribable tenderness.
I could go on for ages about Spock and Jim's relationship in TMP, but I'll leave that to spookyfbi on fanfiction.net, who devoted an essay to the subject, complete with parallels to Decker and Ilia.
Speaking of Decker and Ilia, I hope to God that that unresolved sexual tension was intentional, but, given Star Trek's track record, I wouldn't be surprised if it was accidental.
V'ger was intriguing, and I'm sure it and Nomad would've gotten along had the ever had the chance to meet...
