Katherine Heigl as bounty hunter
15 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
'One for the Money' is a comedy thriller that tried to rejuvenate Katherine Heigl's downwards bound career. Without a doubt she is a versatile actress but never quiet managed to go beyond the 'comedy' realm. Here is another offering that gives her the opportunity to make the viewer laugh and even cringe at some mediocre acting too. Based on Janet Evanovich's 1994 novel of the same name, which was a best seller at it's time. Many novels on the same characters were also published thereafter. This film adaptation attempts to come as close as it can to recreating the genuine authenticity of the novel. The recent 'The Bounty Hunter' followed similar path. And also memories of 'Pink Cadillac' came to mind. All will be familiar with the theme which is as cliché as it can get. Bounty Hunter trying to capture a felon who she rekindles with and fights off the negative elements of society.

Heigl plays a newly divorced who is strapped for cash and needs a job fast. She joins her cousin's bails bondsman agency and gets the responsibility to chase after a bail jumper ex cop Jason O Mara. He insists he is innocent in regards to a police informant's murder. Heigl discovers that any person who supplies her info regarding the case winds up dead. After catching up with O Mara, they bother join forces to find the real killer. They soon realise that this is going to prove as difficult as it seems as the killer is even trying to turn the tables on them. Funny dialogues make the characters interesting to watch.

Despite being based on a successful novel, the film doesn't manage to feel the magic. It lacked the suspense of the book. The director hits the right notes on the directing side. But the real credit for the film goes deservedly to Katherine Heigl. She is what makes the film worthy of seeing. Despite the fact that she received the worst actress award that year, she truly breathed air in to the role. The movies moves at an moderate pace but the suspense did not hold up. Not much range in terms of suspects in the film so it does not help the viewer to guess. However the when the killer comes forward he steals the scene at the end. One would wish he had more screen time. Overall this is a good see if you're a fan of Hegel. However I doubt that any other books of the same author will be adapted as the box office collections were disappointing.

Compulsion (I) (2013)
5/10
Strictly for the fans of Heather Graham
9 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Going by the name I initially thought that 'Compulsion' was a Roman Polanski film. However it turns out to be a remake of a mid 90s Korean movie titled '302'. While viewing this one would not become immediately aware of this. The theme isn't exactly Korean cinema type. As a matter of fact the subject matter is more akin to Hitchcock or European films. However the plot will be familiar to those who have seen 'Diabolique'. The theme is very similar. The story focuses on two characters who seem to be hiding their real intentions from one another. The film very cleverly mixes humour in regular intervals with the serious tone. There is also a mystery element involved. Unfortunately not much unravels in terms of plot to assist the viewer to discover the character motives.

Graham plays a woman who enjoys cooking. Ann Moss is a struggling writer who has happened to move in to the apartment opposite. Graham constantly insists her to try her new dishes, but Moss always seems to refuse. Her presence also seems to bother her. Meanwhile there is a detective played by Joe Mantegna who is questioning Graham regarding Moss's disappearance. This is shown in flashback mode. Both Moss and Graham become close to each other and share one another's sorrows. The acquaint romantically and at the end the truth to Moss's disappearance is revealed.

For a short film this does have a slow pace. Initial time is spent showing the interactions between Heather Graham and Carrie Ann Moss. In terms of plot there isn't much to offer. Slow development of characters take up much time in the early stage of the film. Graham has the entire centre of attention here as she flaunts her beauty and charm in almost every reel. She makes the movie watch able. The twist in the climax doesn't surprise as it is not explained why Graham had a murderous streak. There never were any clues throughout the film that would arise doubt. Identifying her a killer was a little beyond believability. However when this is revealed in a certain scene, it was stylishly done. Overall this film has a very noir atmosphere. Some may like it, some may won't.

D-Day (I) (2013)
6/10
Exceeds good spy thriller
26 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Movies on the Government intelligence and covert operations have been very rare in India. In fact it has been very hard to find an thought provoking movie to see. This was a trend that was ultimately left forgotten in the 90s. Previous films on this theme have not proved a success. Movies such as 'Drohkaal' were impressive for their time but never managed to get a bigger audience. The genre itself has rarely been depicted in a genuine manner. A majority of films present this in a very amateurishly way. 'D Day' is is a honest effort that realistically has revived an old theme.

The film portrays characters in desperate situation and believe in doing the righteous duty in-spite of putting their lives on the line. The covert operation itself is shown in greater detail as it progresses from stage by stage to the actual event. The film presents the story of 3 R.A.W agents (Research analysis wing) agents. Irfan Khan and Arjun Rampal are living normal lives being in a relationship with their wife's as well as keeping their real identity a secret. Huma Quereshi joins them later posing as a student. After a failed attempt to apprehend Iqbal Seth at his daughters wedding in a high rise hotel, they decide to their attempts to bring back to India a terrorist. Initially their abduction plan does not succeed and are forced to shift gears to stay alive and fight for survival as the Indian Government is intent on killing them. Meanwhile the gangster Iqbal has his political associates turning sides against him as they are afraid that links with him will be exposed to the Indian government.

As well as a being a thriller the film does succeed in conveying a message and tries to paint a grim picture of high authority and intelligent authorities in today's times. Working for the military is not only a high risk profession, but also a duty that does not guarantee survival. And when circumstances on duty in change there can be can be no assurance of loyalty. The unique element of the film besides the story is Irfan Khan's sub plot involving his family. How he sacrifices their trust, love and safety is heart wrenching. He is truly the highlight of the film. Arjun Rampal impresses as the tactical officer. His expressions are on the mark and suit his character. Plays the role with conviction. Huma Qureshi gives good support to a male cast as the explosives expert. She suited the character and got under the skin very well.

This was a pleasant surprise coming from a director whose previous venture was a box office flop. He has ingeniously directed the film in tone with it's theme. Nikhil Advani co written the script with three writers. He has beautifully balanced elements of a spy thriller with a true life character. All roles of the actors were well developed and were integral to the story. The pacing is perfect and the story progresses without flaws smoothly. The film is set in Pakistan but shot entirely in Gujarat, India. Overall a recommended film if one is searching for a redeeming entertainment.

Scary Movie 2 (2001)
6/10
Decent sequel but not in the same league as the original
17 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Scary Movie 2 is the follow up to the immensely funny 'Scary Movie' that released in the year 2000. This franchise reintroduced the spoof genre from where the 'Naked Gun' series left off. As a matter of fact it was this franchise that spawned many similar spoof films such as epic movie, disaster movie etc. The Wayans brothers return with more tongue in cheek humour. As a stand alone film it score full points. But one can't help but notice it falling short in comparison to the first film. It felt like a rushed venture. Despite it's short running time, the film didn't seem to have a plot unlike the first movie. Many loose ended comic situations arise revolving around each character. It was almost as if the writer had written the script as production proceeded from one stage to the next.

The whole premise revolves around a group of characters who are invited by Tim Curry to a haunted house to spend the night and conduct supernatural existence experiments. This intending to have connection to 'The Haunting' film. Afterwards strange occurrences begin to happen, which lead to hilarious situations. The film depicts haunting situations in a comic fashion. Apart from some of hysterical content, there were many moments that appeared pale. They were not so funny and the comedy seemed forced at times. For instance the 'basketball' scene. Many films were parodied from the outstanding 'Exorcist' sequence with James Woods, to the 'amityville horror' and 'poltergeist'.

The highlights of the film are without a doubt the scenes involving David Cross and Marlon Wayans. The actors are part of the best moments from the entire movie. Cross is rib achingly funny with his wheelchair antics and Wayans evokes much laughter with his unique acting. The joint and having sex with the ghost segment were the best. Anna Faris unfortunately disappoints as she is shadowed by supporting actors. There was n't much opportunity for her to perform. The 'charlie's angels' scene was bad. and the worst from the selection. Overall this is a good addition to the franchise, but it could have been better if perhaps David Zucker or Aaron Setzler had contributed.

The Rum Diary (2011)
5/10
Below standard
12 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
'The rum diary' is a film adaptation of Hunter S Thompson's popular novel of the same name. Having never read the novel, my opinion of the film tuned out to be pretty shallow. Perhaps I should have done my reading prior to to seeing this. Perhaps it would have changed my perception. I happened to discover this movie when I was looking for an Amber Heard film I hadn't seen. I'm a sucker for noir thrillers So I decided to give it a go. Amber Heard was looking sultry and attractive more than ever, so I guess one would not resist. Those who are fans of Amber will be hugely disappointed as she barely has anything to do besides flaunt her sex appeal. This is fine if you admire eye candy on screen.

The main premise involves a journalist from New York who takes up a journalist job in Cuba. He joins the local newspaper. In the meantime he is approached by a a real estate developer played by Aaron Ekhart who approaches him with a profit proposal and to become a business partner. He accepts it. However Depp falls in to trouble being drunk with the local authorities and Ekhart gets him bail. However trouble begins when he revokes his bail and makes Depp go on the run after Amber has an unexpected encounter with the locals at the local bar. Depp decides to expose Aaron's shaddy business deals.

The film has a noir appeal. Unfortunately in terms of plot there is little to offer the viewer. The plot involving the hotel resort on the island could have been interesting if it had been developed further. The 'romance' and 'comedy' sub plots shadow it badly. It is a pit it wasn't at the centre of focus. Giovanni Ribsi gives good comic support and Amber Heard sparkles in the little regular intervals. Her tan seemed overworked. The film has a slow pace, but it is advised that one has to concentrate sustain interest. Johnny Depp gives a good restrained performance. Bit it is a pity that the script didn't give him the opportunity to show his true potential. My other complaint was with Ekhat's character. It seemed selfish for him to place the blame of Amber's rape on Depp.

Approach this film with caution I suggest. It was slightly below my expectations.

Clerks II (2006)
Great hilarious sequel
1 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Clerks 2 is the outrageous sequel to Kevin Smith's immensely popular 'Clerks' from 1994. The original was made on a short budget of $2700. Immediately it became a huge hit at the box office and claimed cult status. Audiences admired the discussions and basic references to life's issues and gave the picture of I am a big fan of the movie. Everybody could relate to the characters of Randal and Dante. Randal's day at the quick stop groceries was made a living nightmare as Dante unknowingly was making a wreck of his personal life and attempt at running the convenience store. What made this concept unique was that it depicted a 'slice of life' picture.

This is a late sequel and contains all the elements from the first movie with a more enriched plot. This movie was way past it's time and one could only have wished it had a release a few years earlier. As a sequel it succeeds on all levels. There were great performances and the social commentary is hilarious. However I warn that the majority of humour is very adult orientated. But as a R Rated comedy feature, it delivers in all aspects. Ten years have passed on after a freak fire accident at the store and they now work at a fast food restaurant. It is Dante's final day as he is preparing to leave for Florida to marry and settle down with his girlfriend. However he is confused emotionally as he has hidden feelings for the manager played by Rosario Dawson. Randal decides to delight him with a going away surprise, but things don't go to plan.

There is a steady pace throughout the entire movie. All discussions have a witty tone to them. Most topics make sense in the logical point and Kevin Smith has nicely incorporated them in to the plot. The highlight of the is Randal's character played by Jeff Anderson. He excels in his performance. Every scene with him drives the movie on. His theories and insight in to movies and life in general raise eyebrows. Dante's role is disappointingly limited. Rosario Dawson gives a excellent performance. I rate it amongst her best from her entire career to date. Her presence is astounding. She gives good support to the other characters and adds a distinct quality.

In reference to the ending I would argue with the decision that they made with returning back to the routine life of the grocery store. What would justify it? Yes friendship is important, but does that mean you would take a step back in your career?

Orphan (2009)
7/10
Chilling psychological horror
18 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Orphan is one of those kind of movies that subdues your attention at a slow pace. Initially it doesn't feel like a exciting watch however as the movie reaches towards the three quarter hour point, one immediately begins to care about the characters. The interactions and goings on makes one watch on in curiosity. Upon viewing, movies like 'The Omen' and Poison Ivy' will come to mind instantly. However what makes this unique is the central character 'Esther', played by Isabelle Fuhrman. The role was intelligently written and I really think it's open to debate whether a girl can really pull a older aged woman across the ground. But the suspension of disbelief is required if one wishes to enjoy what they're watching. Her character is not an individual to be taken seriously. But if the logical elements are ignored, it turns out to be a enjoyable experience.

Many would perceive this to be a horror movie. But I feel it's more near to psychological horror. Suspenseful and thrilling moments are endless. There is a lack of horror-struck moments. But there are a few occasions where many situations appear so suddenly in the first half when Esther begins to have conflicts with the family members. The pace picks up gradually when she begins to physically hurt and even murder people.

The writing and performances makes the movie special. The combination of them is fabulous. Every character is well developed so that the story unfolds interestingly without becoming routine and repetitive. Vera Farmiga is a versatile actress. She so easily manages to gut under the skin of any character, whether it be a mother, wife or even a psychologist. But the real hero of the movie is child artist Isabelle Furhman. Her portrayal of the adopted Russian girl is so convincing that it sends a shiver down the spine. The character was very well developed. There are many shades to her. Her every expression and verbal dialect appears so real at times that it makes one wonder that in real life she may have the mentality of a adult at such a young age.

Adrenaline pumping non stop joy ride
16 August 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Please do not confuse this for the 80s Gregory Hines movie of the same title. In reference to it's title, it seemed pretty inappropriate. 'Running Scared' is an understatement. The lead character played by Paul Walker was scared but was not running away from anybody. Maybe an alternative title could have been more meaningful. The director is Wayne Kramer who hails from South Africa has directed this feature. His previous movie 'The cooler' was good. The true quality of his talent is evident when watching movie. However his directing abilities are very similar and reminiscent to what other directors have done already. It was witnessed in 'Smokin Aces' and the first ten minute portion appeared like something that John Woo used to do in his early days. It also brought back memories of the final scene of 'True Romance'.

15 minutes in to the movie I knew that I was not going to be disappointed. It is engaging from the outset. The whole premise is surrounding a gun that Walker is searching for after his neighbour's kid takes off with is, seems very interesting. His instruction was to dispose of it after a drug deal went when a bunch of corrupt cops entered the scene. We follow him in his journey as he attempts to reclaim it. In his pursuit many characters he encounters lead from one surprising twist to the next. The boy who is in possession of the weapon is also wanted in connection to attempting to kill his father. The director's script is impressive. The basic idea and synopsis has the potential to encourage any production studio to invest in it.

The lack of character development doesn't deter one from enjoying this. The fast pace of events that unfold sustain attention at all times. Paul Walker's true acting potential is showcased very well. He proves that he is more than Vin Diesel's sidekick. Vera Farminga's middle segment is very creepy and for a short moment takes our thought off the main plot. The main background score seemed misplaced and random. However it is only something temporary. The fast cut editing becomes annoying at times and I only wished the director made minimum use of it. Overall very entertaining and I only wish more thrillers were made.

City character's lives entwine
11 June 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Anurag Basu began his career with vishesh films. Movies like saaya and murder did not help him receive recognition. However 'Life in a metro' made audiences recognise his talent. Initially one does not find a retold theme to be very exciting. But what worked for this movie was the star cast. It could not have been better. With a production house company like UTV motion pictures, one cannot go wrong in the casting department. All the actors managed to liven up a not so great plot. It has all been witnessed in the past with movies like 'The apartment' and shahruck khan's movie 'Yes Boss'. In comparison to 'yes boss' this movie fells more genuine and realistic. 'For love or money' is another movie that came to mind while watching this. One symphatises with the characters and can manage to relate to them. This movie gave Anurag Basu to provide to us a authentic and fresh representation of adults in the city of Mumbai. These people range from a housewife to a husband and to a secretary. These characters seem believable and have a indirect connection to one another.

The core of the movie is based on the lives of a couple played by Shilpa Shetty and K K Menon. Every other character stems though them. They are going through troubled times in their marriage. Misunderstandings and a certain lack of attention is prevalent between them. Shilpa finds a love friendship with theatre actor Shiny Ahuja. KK is embarking in a extra marital relationship with his secretary (Kangana Ranauat), who is in her usual form. She however is unaware that a fellow employee (Sharman Joshi) secretly admires her. As well as this Sharman also offers the use of his rented apartment to his boss KK in favour for possible future promotions. As well this the movie also has a funny subplot involving Irfan Khan and Konkana Sen Sharma who are looking for the perfect life partner. Coincidently the two of them meet through a matrimonial website. Initially they don't approve of each other however eventually attraction occurs. The side plot regarding Dharmendra served not purpose to the movie. It only added a couple of extra minutes to the running time of the movie.

Basu's direction makes many scenes interesting to watch. Many routines moments are enhanced by good camera angles. The performances are indeed the highlight. The relationships are portrayed in a mature manner and does not seem artificial. The scenery of Mumbai is well captured amongst the lives of the characters. Each subplot is given equal attention and the balance is preserved. From the first minute the movie maintains a moderate pace and the length of the movie is perfect. Irfan Khan is a scene stealer and supports the movie with good light hearted moments. This was his first role that was comedy orientated and it turned his career in a different direction. It was pleasant to see Shilpa Shetty after a long time too.

Saw IV (2007)
6/10
Ingenious climax and more traps.
30 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Saw 4 adopts a different approach towards the plot that has been witnessed until now. More characters are introduced and the plot becomes more complex in comparison to Saw 3. Darren Lynn Bousman does a commendable job and with this movie and it seems that he was born to make these movies. One will learn that the entire script of the Saw movies 1 to 7 may well have been scripted prior to the production of the second one. This is a good movie but I noticed that the quality began to deteriorate at a small pace. As more detectives and lieutenants are brought in to the picture, the movie starts to become a investigative piece of work. But if given a re watch it can turn out to become a enjoyable experience nonetheless. There are more victims and traps than one can ever imagine. Without these the movie would not stand up in comparison to it's predecessors.

SPOILERS The dead body of jigsaw is discovered by S.W.A.T along with the surgeon, his wife and Amanda. After a autopsy a tape is discovered by lieutenant Hoffman which actually challenges the finder to pursue the truth behind his death. Detective Kerry's hanging dead body is also discovered and two new detectives Straham and Perez are assigned to find the killer. They begin to have doubts that perhaps there is a male accomplice to the jigsaw. A friend of the decease cop Detective Rigg is forced in jigsaw's games and his destination is to discover the location of Detective Matthews (Wahlberg) and Detective Hoffman who have subjected to jigsaw's trap. They will die if Rigg enters there. Meanwhile Jigsaw's ex wife is being interrogated by Straham. A flashback begin to bring to our attention that Jigsaw once had a medical clinic that he ran with his wife and he lost his child. Detective Rigg continues from one lead to another while attempting to save individuals from Jigsaw's traps with unfortunate consequences. In a surprising twist we learn that Hoffman was also a accomplice to Jigsaw and that this scenario was happening simultaneously when he was requiring surgery. END OF SPOILERS

As I stated earlier the movie features more traps than ever imagined. The first scene involving the visually and verbally impaired men was emotional to watch. The writer really put his imagination in to full force. The movie seemed very similar to the sequel in terms the plot attempting to catch Jigsaw. But the similarities end at that point. There is a deeper insight in to jigsaw's past. This contemplated the present story well. It gave more meaning to his character and we learn to understand why his actions. The genuineness of the theme does remain throughout the movie but Jigsaw's presence is not terrifying as it could be. Jigsaw's cop accomplice is the surprise in the twist but this is the ridiculous element of the movie. I did not feel it was required. However it helps to progress the movie on to the fifth installment. The other twist involving the time line was devious and it gave the climax a good feel.

Saw III (2006)
7/10
Better than the sequel
29 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Darren Lynn Bosman returns to direct his second Saw movie. Saw 3 continues Jigsaw killer's games. His accomplice Amanda returns to assist him in his gruesome games. This movie's uncut version is 2 hours in duration. But the cut version has around 12 minutes of graphic violence edited. Those who will search for more blood and gore will be satisfied. All elements are present in the movie that were lacking in the original and sequel. There is also an improvement to the plot in comparison to the sequel. As the sufferer of cancer, Jigsaw has become bed ridden. But this does not prevent him from subjecting people to his torturous traps. While watching him I was confused whether to have pity for his character, or hate. He enjoys testing people's vulnerability and and patience. Through these means he intends to exert discipline.

SPOILERS Jigsaws suffering has worsened and he is in need of immediate brain surgery. His accomplice Amanda kidnaps a surgeon played by Bahar Soomekh. To her neck is tied a electronic 360 rotating gun. It is connected to his heart rate machine. If he dies, she too dies. She is instructed to perform a brain operation to remove the tuma that is growing. Meanwhile a grieving father(Jeff) who has lost his young son in a hit and run accident has fallen prey to Jigsaw's games. Along his journey he meets a judge, witness and killer of his son. Each individual is in a trap and it is his responsibility to choose whether to save the person or let them die. Jigsaw's tuma is removed and he instructs Amanda to release the trap from the surgeons neck. She refuses and kills the her. At the same time the father enters and discovers his wife wounded. He kills Amanda and Jigsaw. But later doing this he realises that his daughter is in a unknown location that only Jigsaw knew. END OF SPOILERS

This is a more enjoyable movie if compared to the sequel. Bahar Soomekh makes it worth watching. She is very convincing playing the role of the surgeon. But the twist seemed very predictable. I had figured out that she was the husband of Jeff. It was just a matter of time until we were notified. But this does make the climax predictable, only the element of surprising twists were less. For those fans of Saw who are looking for more ingenious traps will be pleased. The first sequence is gut wrenching as a man's legs and arms are clinched by a steel ring. It is also the first time in the franchise where there is some female nudity depicted. This came as a surprise. The strobe lighting and fast editing are becoming very annoying. There are large amounts featured in the movie which make it difficult to concentrate on a few scenes. I understand that it is an integral part of the movie and it's style, but there should be a limit to it. Dina Meyer playing officer Kelly is wasted in one murder scene. Her character is made extinct. But she could have been an asset to the franchise. I would have been more than happy to see her role continued.

Saw II (2005)

Good twists make it worthy of watching
28 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Darren Lynn Bosman takes over from James Wam for the sequel to the immense popular horror movie 'Saw'. The climax of the first movie gave way for a follow on feature. James Wam turns executive producer. The 'Jigsaw' killer returns making the lives of more people a misery as his puppets are a group of individuals. Those looking for more victims will be pleased with this movie. There are more than 2 individuals who become at the mercy of Jigsaw's intentions. However the element of violence is not higher due to a larger body count. But the emphasis is more on the plot. There is more focus on the jigsaw killer. His morals and principles are reflected upon. We get a deeper insight in to the background of his character. His conversational scenes are fantastic. This is indeed a highlight in the movie. Tobin Bell playing jigsaw is impressive and convinces in his role.

SPOILERS A detective played by Donnie Wahlberg has a son who is kidnapped and placed in a large booby trapped house along with 6 other individuals. The jigsaw killer informs them with the instructions to find an antidote to the lethal nerve gas that is being inhaled by them. If they do not accomplish this in the set given time, they will die. Simultaneously Jigsaw's hideout is discovered by S.W.A.T and he is constantly persuaded by Wahlberg to tell the whereabouts of his son. The surveillance footage of the individuals in the house is also found out. They attempt to discover where the location of the captives is. Many of the individuals in the house either pass away because of the gas or get killed by the traps. Some also turn against each other in pursuit of escaping alone. Eventually Jigsaw gives in and tell Wahlberg the location. But all is not what it appears to be. END OF SPOILERS

For a sequel I was slightly disappointed. The whole setup in the house was vaguely reminiscent of 'House on haunted hill'. It is NOT my intention to say it is a rip off, but the thought of the movie instantly came to mind. But the capture and interrogation sequences of jigsaw redeem the movie in many ways. His subplot supports very well. My movie is devoid of genius killer traps. I hoped to see more of them as it is one element that makes the franchise unique. The twists are unpredictable and enjoyable. Jigsaw also has a accomplice. Given the fact that jigsaw is 70, this is acceptable. I felt that Dina Meyer could have had more scope. She is a wonderful actress and could have been involved to a larger scale.

Saw (2004)
6/10
Reminiscent of 'The Unknown'
26 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This was the first 'SAW' movie that spawned many sequels. The movie gained tremendous success and got a big fan following which led to sequels releasing each year since 2004. The director James Wam is talented and created a totally original character for the horror genre. However he has not managed to add much to his resume apart from the Saw franchise. Being the director and writer gives one the opportunity, freedom to apply individual knowledge and ideas to practise. Upon viewing I was receiving deja vu of the movie 'Seven' and 'The Cell'. Though in this situation there is quite less focus on the detectives. There is a flashback giving an account of a woman's ordeal that she encountered with the 'Jigsaw' killer.

SPOILERS We begin with being introduced to two men whose legs are chained to steel pipes in a unknown location. Between them there lies a dead man with a tape recorder. They play the tape and they are given instructions by the 'jigsaw killer'. The doctor has to kill the other guy by 6.00 or his wife and daughter dies. Initially they attempt to free themselves but their efforts fail. Simultaneously there are two detectives that are trying to apprehend the killer. They come face to face with him on one occasion but it only leads to demise of one detective. Meanwhile time is at the essence and the two chained men decide to be devious and fool the killer but they fail. Eventually fate intervenes and the doctor becomes desperate after time has run out. END OF SPOILER

I did not get the impression that this was a horror movie as it also had elements of a thriller and suspense combined. The theme itself is very Korean and Japanese cinema influenced. The innocent characters forced in a uncontrollable situation was very reminiscent of Asian cinema itself. I'm very sure that the trend of Asian horror remakes has certainly inspired this franchise. The movie wastes no time in progressing with the plot, however the constant flashbacks do sometimes deter the attention away from the main narrative. The idea of a serial killer who places people in to letting themselves getting killed is very unique. It was convincingly shown. But the look of the killer was unconvincing and I was expecting a evil looking person. Danny Glover and Cary Elves stand out in the performances. Glover goes in to his 'Predator' mode and it was good to see Elves in a challenging role. Adam Faulkner was funny on a few occasions.

Classic disturbing Horror
22 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I had heard that this movie had been banned in many countries outside the States due to it's raw depiction of torture and terror. Upon my viewing 9 years ago I could understand why censor boards in other countries had to adopt a harsh and strict attitude towards the movie. In this present day a movie such as this would not be considered violent or brutal at all due to many laws that have been amended and altered over the past few years. The average movie goers attitudes towards perceiving movies has changed considerably. This can be one reason for why many movies that are disturbing as this are released with only a few minor cuts.

Tobe Hooper the director had managed to create a new trend in the horror genre which led to characters like Freddy Kruger and Micheal myers to come on screen. This is one of Hooper's best works to date. Despite the low budget he has managed to make a movie that cuts to the core of the movie watcher's mind. 'The Poltergeist' and 'The Mangler' I consider also to be movies of his that are worth watching too. Unfortunately Hooper's career has been left to nothing but producing franchise movies and giving rights to remakes. He had a lot of potential to sustain a good directing career.

I had a terrifying experience the first time I watched the movie. The only other two movies that I feel would match up to the level as this would be 'The last house on the left' and 'The exorcist'. These movies too grind to the nerve. The frightening factor of TCM roots from continuous non stop screaming that the female character of Marilyn Burns evokes. Her display of terror and struggle was very convincing and contributes heavily towards making the movie a cult classic. If her acting was not so realistic maybe the movie would not have been so successful. The movie was shot in a grainy documentary style to give the viewer the feeling of realism. The low production value does not deter the movie from generating so much fear on a small scale.

Special mention has to be given to the cinematography department. Many wide angle shots at a slow rate are a delight to watch. This helped to bring a feeling of suspense and was very stylish. The background score which is simple as can be, was suited to the relevant scenes helped create the correct atmosphere. My only complaint with the movie was the lack of face value. Casting some established actors would have made the movie enjoyable to watch.

Clint Eastwood attempts light hearted comedy.
19 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Without a doubt Clint Eastwood is one Hollywood's greatest actors ever. As well as being a versatile actor he proved his capabilities in being behind the camera too. Though I am surprised as to why he never attempted to play a negative character in his entire career. In 'Every which way but loose' Clint gives the comedy genre a shot for the first time. He is convincing, however due to heavy criticism he did not pursue comedy in the long term. The director James Foley directed 'The Enforcer', which also starred Clint. But this in my opinion is his best movie to date. James was more recognized as a assistant director. Unfortunately he did not receive much recognition as a mainstream director.

SPOILERS The writer has presented a very routine plot which limits ones expectations towards the end. Philo Beddon (Clint) plays a truck driver who for extra income on the side engages in regular bare fist fights. He lives with his friend Orville, his ma and a orangutan. At a country club he finds a loving acquaintance with a singer Lyn Taylor (Sondra Locke). After spending some time with Philo she takes a sudden leave to Denver which surprises him. In frustration he attacks a cop. This leads the cop and his buddy to search for for Philo to Denver. Simultaneously there also happens to be a gang of bikers that are searching for Philo too for trashing and selling a few of their bikes. Philo does in-coincidently meet Lyn again but faces some surprising revelations about her real identity. END OF SPOILERS

If you're a fan of comedy, this is a fun and enjoyable movie to watch. It is not of the rib tickling nature but Clint gives and honest and sincere attempt at comedy. However it is not entirely a one man show. Other supporting characters gives good support. On the script level I felt that more substance was needed to make the plot give a impact. Watching some dumb bikers does not really do justice to half of the story. But Sondra Locke's negative character was a highlight in the movie. She is a fantastic actress and displays a side to us that we had not seen very often. It is disappointing to see that her career didn't develop further. The movie has a moderate pace but the sub plot involving the cops could have had a better finale. The culture of country and western music is blended appropriately in the movie and serves as a good backdrop. Many famous singers were included in a few scenes.

Any fan of Clint Eastwood will enjoy this movie. However true admirers of comedy may be disappointed.

Better than the original
15 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
It is quiet rare for a comedy franchise to make a sequel that can turn out better than it's predecessor. I can recall 'Caddyshack' failed to follow up to it's original. The outcome to the sequel was terrible. However Police Academy 2 is a highly enjoyable sequel which succeeds in many departments. The main characters return to the screen again for a fun filled adventure. However Callahan was not in the cast and the introduction of Zed and sweet chuck was hilarious. In fact Zed is the main highlight in the movie and brings a smile to the face whenever he comes on screen. His presence is hysterical. His involvement was an integral part to the movie. His acting and comic timing was on target.

Spoiler After completing the training at Lassard's academy the misfit's put their ability and skills to the test on the streets. Lasard's brother is experiencing difficulty managing the worst precinct in the town and demands new recruits. Mahoney and the team are assigned to rid the streets of a gang syndicate that are wrecking havoc. However captain Moser is persistent to make their attempts fail so that he can get senior position. Eventually Mahoney goes undercover to integrate in to the gang so they can redeem themselves. END OF SPOILER

The movie had a shorter running time than the original but this does take away any quality aspects. The comedy portions are more funnier and moser's shower scene is a highlight. The element of senior level corruption is still the main factor in the movie as it was in the original. There is also a plot and the characters had something to do. I could not understand why the character of captain Harris could not be present. But his replacement of moser was not disappointing. He came as a surprise. Takleberry's character had a love interest in the form of Collen Camp which was interesting to watch as a sub plot. In comparison to the first movie this had a more gritty and downtown atmosphere to it. If you're a fan of the franchise, this should be in your collection.

A rehash of "The last seduction" in in B grade style.
5 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
I accidentally overcame this movie on a late night show on HBO Channel some time ago. I gave it a watch as nothing else rang my bell. Just twenty minutes in to the movie and I could predict what I was going to be subjected to. No doubt this is good time pass material if one really puts his/her mind to it. The made for TV movie glossy image was everywhere. The pace of the movie was adequate. But what can one really expect from a TV thriller ?. Well, the leading actress gives the viewers full view of her naked body while undressing and taking a shower. Plus there is a collection of some real hot looking women.

Spoilers ahead A bored frustrated wife leaves her husband and LA behind to search for happiness and freedom. She also decides to take with her 500K of her hubbies cash. She sets her sights on a doctor who lives alone. The pair fall in love, but it is not long until her husband dispatches his men to search for her and the money she took. She becomes well aware of this and tempts the doctor in to protecting her and to kill her husband if he attempts to approach her. Later she averts men who nearly come close to her and gets the husband out of the way too. End of spoilers

The plot is very routine and at some intervals clichéd indeed. But with the short running time it is not bad. If you admire late night entertainment, check it out.

Enjoyable to watch if one likes violence and gore.
12 August 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Jonathan Liebbsman gives 'Texas chainsaw' his treatment. As a director the standard is above excellence. But as the title states 'The beginning', there is little to appreciate in terms of being a prequel. The first 5 minutes gives a brief insight in to Leatherface's background. Even the history behind the family is not explained. We don't know why they are cannibals. The remainder of the movie is more of a rehash of the original, but in a more detailed context. Since the first chainsaw movie was made by Tobe Hooper in 1974, the series became a franchise. However I don't feel any of the movies were loyal and faithful in contrast to the original. However this is better than 'The next generation' and Hooper's sequel. But in my opinion 'Leatherface' was enjoyable of the whole series.

The whole plot rests on subjecting the audiences to torture and gore in non stop continuity. In fact the entire movie uses this has it's base to entertain. The suspense factor is not present in the movie at any segment. Neither is there any feeling of controversy while viewing. I would not say this is a bad movie. But in terms of writing there is nothing new to offer. The scenes of brutality And violence are convincing and terrifying. They cut to the core and manage to keep ones attention throughout. The character of Chrissie played by Jordana Brewster helps to progress the movie forward as she desperately attempts to locate and rescue her friends from the sadistic family. She gives a good performance but has very limited scope to do anything. But it was surprising to see that she was not another damsel in distress which is very common to see.

In terms of direction Jonathan Liebbsman gives a good view of Texas and very stylishly films Leatherface's segments. The cinematography is at high standard and is very reminiscent of Hooper's direction. However giving more screen time to R Lee Emmy rather than Leatherface was not required. The whole premise is about Leatherface's presence and why Emmy was more at the forefront I could not understand. Even the character of Leatherface seemed like a Micheal Myers. His squealing and haunting personality was not existent. Revealing him very much at the outset destroyed the atmosphere of suspense and mystery. It was interesting to see that the youngsters displayed courage and integrity to fight back as opposed to behaving week and in pain. So that was something new to see.

Overall the movie scores high in terms of violence and cinematography. Performances are good too.

Lower in standard in comparison to original
29 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
'Fast and the furious' from 2001 was a trend setter. The movie not only had a routine plot but introduced the theme of street racing so beautifully to the screen. It incorporated a story as well as satisfying racing and action scenes. Rob Cohen presented the movie with such style and the computer graphics seemed natural. This is the fourth movie in the series, which in my opinion should have been the sequel. Justin Lei has directed the movie with his style and has avoided replicating what the previous directors did in the series. I'm sure that his career will sustain in the long run if he continues at this rate. He has made the movie on a more mature scale however the MTV style is very evident throughout. C.g.i is implemented at a large amount. Unfortunately the quality of it is quiet poor in contrast to how it appeared in the previous movies. This made many of the action scenes appear cartoonish that one could not avoid noticing it.

Once again the audience is presented with the same routine theme of drug dealers and smuggling. This was also the main theme in '2 fast 2 furious'. This time round there is not a different perspective on viewpoint to the plot. The writing has more substance and the plot is more thicker. Walker once again takes on the role of the infiltrator who has to bring to justice a dealer who is bringing in high quantities of illegal substances from Mexico. I could not understand why there was less emphasis given to the action scenes as this is what the whole franchise is about. The movie contains 4 chase scenes. However in three of them the quality is lacking. They are shot in dark surroundings and the clarity is quiet poor. However the underground scenes were impressive. The first scene is truly outstanding and exciting to watch.

SPOILERS The movie begins with Vin and Rodriguez risking it again with attempting to take tankers of gasoline with the assistance of a few friends. After a failed attempt Toretto decides to stay low for a while and go underground. He is later shocked to discover that Letty was murdered. He returns to LA and meets his sister Jordana who takes him to Letty's crash scene. His lead takes him to a drug dealer that Walker too wants to apprehend. They both decide to join forces and infiltrate in to his gang by taking part in street race. At a drug deal they plan to get him arrested. But it does not work out. The dealer escapes. However his love interest gives Vin his whereabouts information. END OF SPOILERS.

Upon viewing the movie one will feel that they are watching a undercover cop movie. But without a doubt that is what this is. More attention is given to the story than on the action. The content is high on the cop versus bad guy scenario. The highlight is without a doubt the first scene. The enjoyment element was at a high point. I had wished that the movie sustained with that same level. The emotional impact that the characters have experienced through the first movie is very clearly depicted here. They are not youngsters anymore and are managing to adapt to a normal livelihood. But personal intentions bring them altogether to face danger. The director has given a good effort and the movie has been directed to standard. However it does not quiet manage to surpass the original. It will always remain superior in the franchise.

The movie reunites the four characters from the original. But the on screen chemistry does not sparkle to a large extent. Jordana Brewster gets limited scope and there is neither a scene where she is behind the wheel. Her involvement in the plot is limited to nothing. Michelle Rodriguez has two scenes. As she was a huge asset in the original I was hoping to see more of her. I could not understand why the writer had to give her such a brief appearance. Vin Diesel and Paul Walker are at the centre of the movie. But Vin was very calm in many of scenes and does not show much enthusiasm in his acting. He was not displaying the usual intensity which is evident in many of the roles which he has done. However in the driving department he performs to the best of his ability.

Overall this is a commendable effort but a true fan of the original will be slightly disappointed with action scenes as they do not contrast high in quality with the original. Plot wise there is more development.

The truth is always bitter.
6 July 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Ram Gopal Verma has always been renowned for making movies that cater for audiences who search for intelligent cinema. He is a director that believes in the movies he makes and will not resort to family cinema. He has gone through his good and bad phases. However in my opinion he has made more good than bad movies and has come out as a winner. I respect his morals and ethics. His latest venture revolves focusing on the the news and media corporations. We are introduced to 2 channels that are always competing with each other to sustain their viewer ratings. India 24 is owned by Amitabh Bachan and Headlines 24/7 is owned by Mohnish Behl. Both characters have their own principles in running the channels and have alternative methods in presenting stories to the public.

Amitabh believes in conveying the truth. His policy is believing in showing people reality and not fabricated information. Mohnish Behl is more desperate to keep his channel in the competitive lead that he stands for presentation. What is right or wrong has no significance to him. The plot begins with the involvement of Paresh Rawal's character. He is a politician who has the support of industrialist Rajat Kapoor(Bhachan's son). Sudhir who plays Amitabh's second son is tempted in to making a broadcast on the news that accuses a rival politician's involvement in a bomb blast. Kapoor and Rawal feel that this will help increase their level of support in the public's eye. The mission is achieved and the channels TRT ratings increase to a high point. However the new recruit played by Ritesh Deshmuk decides to play detective and uncover the truth behind what had happened. He discovers a conspiracy that would indeed bring down the politician and Headlines 24/7 which he presents to Amitabh Bahchan.

Verma takes on quiet a challenge with this movie. The subject matter is more groomed to the tastes of someone like Madhur Bhandarkar. The theme itself is not new at all. However Verma presents it with his unique style of direction. At certain intervals the camera-work does become repetitive and annoying. The performances are great. Sudhir stands out of the cast. He gives a performance thats worth appreciating. Concept wise it felt like just another movie that Bhandarkar is known for. He is famous for his movies on exposes. However Verma does not disappoint and proves that he too his capable of making a movie on similar grounds. However maybe if there was more substance in the plot it would deserve a higher rating. The background score which suited the movie's tone went over the top n most scenes. Overall t6his would be recommended to those who search for meaningful cinema.

The Addiction (1995)

Vampire preaches philosophy.
22 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
From the director of 'Body Snatchers' and 'Bad Lieutenant' Abel Ferrara, comes a movie which is in the horror vein. Horror is not a theme which Ferrara is highly regarded for, however 'The addiction' rather tends to pursue giving a dictation on philosophical theories than intending to frighten the viewer. I first watched this when I was a student myself. This is one movie that can be appreciated for what exists underneath than watching people being bitten. Initially many will perceive this to be a vampire movie. But ones perception will be dependant on how he/she understands the concept. Shot in black and white, this has intended to give the movie a Gothic atmosphere. I personally felt that the black and white presentation eradicates a small proportion of the level of enjoyment that could have been experienced.

SPOILERS The basic plot revolves around Lily Taylor who plays a philosophy student. On one night she is bitten by Annabelle Sciorra. From that night on the course of her life changes forever as she slowly begins to live life differently and acts in inhuman manners. She sucks blood from a few individuals and in between we hear quotes of philosophy that she narrates. In the end she attains her degree and indulges in a blood orgy at a get together party with a few of a revamped friends. I found it difficult to understand the final scene. My interpretation was quite confusing. I could not understand if Taylor was alive or dead. The movie ends on a strange piece of thought. But plot wise one should not expect much on it. END OF Spoiler

This is one of Abel Ferrara's more intelligent and less appreciated movies. He had moved far away from the tacky material that he used to make in the 70s and 80s. Many may experience a unsettling feeling with the images of a graphic nature but this is part of what Taylor is studying. Lily Taylor gives a fine performance and her constant body movements expressing the pain she feels is very realistic. She does more than act. The movie has a fast pace and with a short running time of 82 minutes there is never a dull moment. This will not be suited to the taste of many but if one has a interest in philosophy, one can't go wrong.

A rare concept convincingly depicted.
8 June 2010
Warning: Spoilers
After 'Luck by chance' Farhan Akhtar is back on the big screen in 'Karthik calling Karthik'. With this role it gave him the opportunity to play a character that was more simple, vulnerable and emotional. The role has many shades and is not one sided. As in the same vein as 'Don' the movie belongs to the suspense thriller genre. Many people may have seen movies like 'Phone booth' and 'When a stranger calls', so this will be very familiar territory to those. The movie revolves around the telephone devise and how it becomes the centre of concern for a certain individual. The movie is directed by a newcomer by the name of Vijay Lalwani. He has also apparently written the script. I have doubts that he may hail from the school of Farhan Akhtar. His technique in making this movie are highly reminiscent of Farhan's style. For a directing debut feature Lalwani has shown competency in this department but in terms of writing there seemed to be a lack of substance. He talent has potential but the plot I personally feel required more complexity.

Prior to watching this movie it is advised not to conduct research in to the mystery elements and the plot of the movie. This would most possibly eliminate all the suspense factors. For one to enjoy the movie at its highest level it is best to watch it with a clear mind and not have high expectations. The opening scene will indeed give the viewer doubts towards discovering the truth behind his characters past, however it is not as simple as it seems. The star cast is small and Ram Kapoor and Shefali Shetty have been included to make it worthwhile. Deepika Padukone who seemed perfect for the role manages to give good support to Farhan. Initially due to the age differences I felt that they did not suit each other. But their relationship is projected from a mature perspective so the pairing felt acceptable eventually.

SPOILERS The plot revolves around the main character 'Karthik' played by Farhan. He lives by himself and shy and a introvert by nature. He has serious confidence issues and is constantly suppressed by his work boss. He secretly admires Shonali (Deepika) but is unable to express his feelings to her. Later to his surprise he discovers that she is in a relationship with a fellow work colleague. He purchases a new a telephone. This adds to his frustration in life as he begins receiving calls at 5.00 am everyday from a stranger who refers to himself as Karthik also. The callers voice also appears to be identical. After repeated phone calls Karthik begins to befriend the stranger as he supports him through tough times. He helps Karthik to become more sociable and gain self esteem. Shonali too becomes close to Karthik and they fall in love. He tells her about the caller and they attempt to discover who it is. Unfortunately after breaking the callers promise of not letting anybody know about the phone calls, Karthik's life becomes a nightmare as his life begins to fall apart. Shonali too rejects him. This forces him in to living in recluse and moving to a destination where he cannot be followed. Meanwhile Shonali and Karthik's psychiatrist attempt to locate him. END OF SPOILER

As the theme is not groundbreaking, it has been brought to the screen in an authentic manner. The director has incorporated many stylish camera angles which enhance the intriguing moments throughout. He has also managed to sustain the pace of the movie by simultaneously developing the character while progressing the plot too. The suspense and curiosity factor sustains through the movie however the love track tends to make the movie loose its grip at times, because it becomes a speed breaker. However the love track has its importance to the main plot.

The climax is acceptable however I was expecting something a little more different. However it was not a disappointing revelation. It can be believable to a certain extent. The theory has been used in a few other movies. The background score was appropriate to the movie's theme. It helped bring on the correct atmosphere but was overused. Many scenes did not require it.

Farhan Akhtar gives his best effort to pull off a complex role however I did not feel it was suited to his ability. He was unconvincing in portraying the emotional and fearful traits. Maybe a more experienced actor could have done a better job. Deepika Padukone again plays the love interest. Her hair, make up and costumes bring out the sheer beauty within herself. She does what she is best at and that is looking glamorous. Her acting abilities are improving and maturing from every movie she does. She gives good support but does not have much practical involvement towards the end.

Jungle (2000)
7/10
More jungle than you could ever imagine
31 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Ram Gopal Verma is renowned for making movies on different genres and themes. He has always adopted many unique forms of direction. 'Jungle' is one movie that may have been forgotten by many. But to this day is far more superior than many of the moves that he makes. This movie was made at a time when Verma made every movie with high standard despite the low budget. Currently he has resorted somehow to focusing on high costs and low quality formula. In my opinion I still regard him as a film maker who has a high vision. 'Jungle' is low on the production value standard but the movie has been shot with quality aspects.

'Jungle' revolves around a safari touring group that are help captive in the forest reservation by a gang after one of their members are captured. They expect his release in return for the hostages. However Urmaila Matondkar is kept behind and Fardeen Khan vows to get her back. The opening scene brings back memories of 'Jaws'. Maybe it was the directors idea to pay homage to the classic. The scene of the army commando truck unexpectedly exploding was very reminiscent.

It can be a difficult mission to make a movie in the jungle and forest regions however Verma has accomplished this with great skill. He has used highly stylish camera angles and has fulfilled his part to his full potential. The movie reaches the 2 hour 25 minute region. However this goes against the second half segment of the movie as it resorts to a game of cat and mouse between the characters. Sunil Shetty searches for Sushant and Sushant searches Urmila. The first half has more momentum in its pace.

The writer has combined a humorous tone in many serious situations. This gives the viewer the indication that these jungle gangs have feelings too and are human. Sandeep Chowta is once again on to a winner with a fabulous background score. It deserves recognition. Without it the movie would not have had such a impact originally. The background music is the heart of the movie. It assists bringing a soul and feeling in to many of the scenes.

Urmila Matondkar does not get the opportunity to display much versatility in her role. She has nothing to do but behave as the damsel in distress and shout and scream. Her scope in the movie was limited. But she did her part well. Her clothing was not suited to her role. Maybe jeans would have been appropriate.

The is movie is to be advised to be viewed in high definition as the picture quality and sound are much better.

Great 70s siege movie.
30 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
John Carpenter has been hailed as one of Hollywoods best thriller, suspense and horror directors from the seventies and eighties. His high school project movie 'Dark Star' from 1974 received a lot of attention. Since then many of his movies were very high in substance but low in budget. Having low financial investment, it has not prevented Carpenter from making quality movies. Of late he has been absent from the film making scene and only making fewer movies than he used to. His recent 'Ghosts from mars' was appreciative.

'Assault on precient 13' is a siege movie. This is truly a classic from the seventies. Shot in less than a month, Carpenter combined two themes to make one movie. He stated that this was more of a updated version of 'Rio Bravo', but in a modern setting. The movie also had a zombie movie atmosphere to it. The quality aspects are clearly evident as one would watch the movie. Carpenter's direction and the cinematographer have enhanced the presentational aspects. Many simple scenes give huge impact. Without a doubt the movie does have a thought provoking concept. It does indeed compel one to imagine what would be done to respond if a event like this ever did happen back then. Of course technology has progressed and advanced now but it does raise questions.

SPOILERS Members of a police preicent and 2 convicts fight and attempt to defend for themselves after LA street gangs seek retribution for their fellow gang members deaths. To seek help proves difficult as they have no communication system. END OF SPOILERS

The movie has a moderate pace. With a running time of 90 minutes every segment proceeds meaningfully. Carpenter's background score is the heart of the movie. He has incorporated simple music and sounds that bring out the correct atmosphere. The movie has a haunting feeling which works perfectly with the theme.

This is highly recommended to those who would enjoy thrillers.

Heathers (1988)

Teen flick with black comedy
20 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is truly one of my favourite teen movies. I watched it so many times when I was at school. The characters, atmosphere and humour that was evident in the movie was very realistic. The movie intended to present a picture of high school student rivalries and how peer pressures can lead to ones isolation from others. In the second half the subject of 'teenage suicide' is explored as the students of Westerburg High are under the misunderstanding regarding deaths of fellow students. However I don't think the theme was explored in a mature manner. Treating it with a houmouristic tone was not suitable. It is a serious issue and to present it in this manner was totally absurd.

Keeping that to aside the director Micheal Lehman has done a good job as a director. His camera angles and style of direction seem straight out of a horror movie. His understanding of the theme is modern. Many comedy moments are integrated in to the scenes which assist in character development.

Winona Ryder and Christian Slater steal the show as the modern day Bonnie and Clyde pair that take on the method of murder to make their high school a better place. They decide to kill a few students and make it look like suicide to hide the truth. This eventually leads to negative vibes occurring all across the high school.

This movie really was the source of inspiration for 'pump up the volume' Which also happened to be a Slater movie too. The movie attempted to address the issues that affect students in present times however that was as far as the similarities were concerned.

The movie has a moderate pace but progresses with the plot at quick pace. Unfortunately the mid point segment seemed to run out of ideas but regained its momentum towards the end. Overall a movie recommended to those who admire teen flicks.
