The Male Swagger (1999)
Pure brilliance - Darius Safavi is a genius!
The history of film can be broken down into two categories: a time before and after the Male Swagger. In April of 1999, director Darius Safavi mixed memory and desire into one tangible work of beauty (not without the help of writer Colin Court). I will admit, it has been nearly five years since I last saw The Male Swagger, but from time to time, I hear the sound of Wulfgar's exclamation of, "These men look worthy of a warrior's esteem" which only rings truer in these troubling times. Although it's not widely known, many of the techniques in this movie (anime sequence combined with exploitation) predate those used in Kill Bill by several years, yet Mr. Safavi receives little of the credit. Still, it's comforting to know that in these troubling times, one can still look back on The Male Swagger and still see that many of it's messages still ring true after nearly a decade.
