The Wolverine (2013)
Not a good action movie, but...
...at least I could enjoy Japan, the cute and the beautiful girl, a really fantastic train fight scene, the play of Hugh Jackman* and partly the background story.
Unluckily director Mangold is not the right guy for that kind of movie. He seems to be more the character guy, not the action one. Although there is quite a lot potential for amazing fight scenes, what he makes out of it is more like a storm in a bathtub, than a hurricane. But as already mentioned except the train scene! Usually I just need the right amount of action (for example Transformers is too much for me), but this movie is lacking too much. Even an unsure and insecure, broken and lost Wolverine Jackman can't make up for this.
In the beginning you see a depressed Wolverine/Logan, that gives some new insight. If you like Japan, you can find a lot of truth in the second part, shortcut, but somehow realistic. The climatic fighting scene in the last act on the other hand has the usual sci-fi/fantasy touch and is just silly and boring.
To sum it up: This movie has good intentions, some good scenes, but is like the Japanese Alps: Up and down, up and down. If you don't watch it, you have nothing missed.
*compared to other superhero actors, but he looses to "Iron Man" Robert Downey Jr.
Bulshinjiok (2009)
A well made and superb performed movie
Actually I have problems with adding at least 10 new and meaningful lines to this movie. All important stuff to understand the movie was already written by other reviews: most importantly the role of the crane. So I can't give you a lot of new input, except maybe one thing: *slight spoiler* When Hee-Jin has her vision at the playground, she finds a lost tooth. In Korea the dream of loosing a tooth is said to have the unlucky meaning, that a relative will die.
About the actors/actresses. I really love the performance of leading actress Nam Sang-mi who is a very convincing older sister and doubting disbeliever. She doesn't look too artificially perfect like many other Korean star(let)s, but is a beautiful girl anyway. I felt the shaman and the mother overacted , thats why I subtracted 1 point.
Like in many movies from Korea the police is depicted somehow stupid. I really worry, there might be a grain of truth...
If you don't need the nail-biting thrill of surprise-horror, I really hope you have the chance to watch the movie. You can at least find an interesting story, some details about (superstitious or not) Korea and something to discuss about.
Please excuse my not perfect English.
Ginger & Rosa (2012)
terrificly well played film
I don't understand, why this movie is rated that bad so far. The topic might not interest everybody (1960, London, two adolescent girls, Cuba-crisis), but this movie is played so magically intensively and sensitive, I really enjoyed watching the movie the whole time.
The story is not obvious from the beginning and it is not a gay-movie, as you might think from watching the trailer. It is more about the cold war in bigger terms and problems of growing girls in family terms.
Elle Fanning is probably the best young actress of the last years! (All other actors play very convincing as well).
The directing of Sally Potter is fantastic as always. I hope the movie will be recognized as it is:
A precious gem!
The Man from Earth (2007)
Great movie - even "true" Christians should watch it
There are very few movies I can imagine to give a 9 (or a 10). For example "Bin Jip", "The Usual Suspects", or "Primer" and even "Matrix". Why is this little independent movie one of them? Because it is an intelligent made movie and it forces you to use your own brain - qualities only a few movies have. The discussion (here at IMDb) goes about the criticism of Christianity. I think this is not the point of the movie. This movie is only criticising people who literally believe in the words of the fairy tales written in the Bible. Not the idea behind. People who _behave_ like Christians, not just go to church on Sunday, can enjoy the movie because it doesn't change a thing to them. They will still care about social coexistence, still be nice to others and still always try to do the right thing. I suggest to take some time, turn on your brain, and watch this movie with friends or family. Maybe you can get a new point of view, a new perspective. As far as I can tell, the research for this movie was done very well. The actors a convincing and the setting is as simple as it has to be.
In my opinion science fiction at its best!
