Precious (II) (2009)
7/10
Powerful yet with mixed feelings.
3 November 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I had the pleasure of getting to watch this movie at the Writers Guild Theatre with a Q&A after with Gabby Sidibe and Paula Patton present. Maria Carey couldn't make the Q&A because she got taken by Jay Leno that same day. I do agree that it is a very powerful adaptation of the life of an overweight low self-esteem girl who's family abused her throughout her life and father who sexually raped her, caused her to have a child who is born a mongoloid and has a second child from another rape from her father while her mother is looking the other way in another room. Although she seems to be well fed (chubby), she seems to be constantly hungry, poor, many times angry because she is being teased by other people surrounding her and when she gets home, she gets things thrown by her own mother and gets verbally abused. She even goes and steals a bucket of chicken from a fast food restaurant. Precious does go to her "happy place" fantasy world when her situation gets bad and maybe a way to protect her mental self. Powerful as it may seem as the crowd cries over my shoulder, I get this cold feeling somehow. Even though this is the kind of situation that happens with a very poor unwanted illiterate girl, I get many different mixed feeling about this movie. It's got some funny moments throughout the film, but at the same time coming out at the time when people are at their weak points in life, this may not give a positive role play. In fact, I believe that it is somewhat shockingly extreme that there are actually families that live their lives this way in the Ghetto. It's best to always look forward to positives things in life no matter how dim and desolate it may be for a person. This character finally gets out of her wretched family and turns to a teacher and counselor to try to turn her life around. Precious's mother would be an extreme person who only cares about getting welfare checks more than the welfare of her own daughter and shockingly doesn't seem to care one bit about the children that were born (you will be shocked at some of the segments of what the mother does to the babies). So how could this movie be a true heart movie? I really can't say because it's torn and split many peoples hearts before becoming recovered in the end. Again, I have to admit that the realism played by an actress (Gabby) who still doesn't think she is an actress played a role that would rival some of experienced actresses who's been doing it for years. My final conclusion is that it is still a worthy movie to be seen because it will definitely transport you to a world that you wish or glad not to live this life.

This Is It (2009)
10/10
This is and always will be it.
29 October 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I wrote this little blog after watching "This Is It" in Facebook and IMDb and wanted to share because I wasn't that much of a fan of Michael Jackson except this documentary was so inspiring, so I pay my tribute to the King of Pop. First of all, I thought the movie was powerful enough to show that Michael Jackson has still got the awesome moves like he did it in the 80's. Those who followed him after his world abandoned him from all the tabloids and forgot the real talent of this magical icon, was given a new inspiration and pleasure of the creativity of Michael. Yes, the world somehow abandoned this great singer/dancer/entertainer because he's different and eccentric, but we all are in our own way. During the entire movie of "This Is It", just watching the rehearsal of watching MJ perform even at 50% of how he could of shown his real energy in front of his huge concerts, made me see that it really takes a lot out of a person to do this… I could not sleep with these kind of rehearsals. Those dancers are handpicked because they have the stamina and moves of gymnasts and are proud of what they do and have lots of fun and excitement. Parts of the movie had segments where MJ would change even the smallest dance moves to make every reaction to his perfection and being in sync with every dancer takes great agility. I have to say that I am greatly inspired by the dancers and also share their excitement being with Michael Jackson. Their coach told them they are an extension of Michael for every move he makes in stage. Getting to the special effects, it's really neat how you can make hundreds of people added in the screen dancing very military like and strong. Watching the 3D version of Thriller was a real treat and seeing all the costume designs are very well done. Kudos to the special effects people. Kudos to the Director for making this happen. There are even funny moments of how MJ has to conserve his throat by not giving all his voice… I just though it's funny considering some of these songs were his ballads and slow songs. One of my favorites was "Smooth Criminal". I liked every scenery and effects and synchronizing energy from the segment. This is definitely one to watch on a big screen with all the songs vibrating the walls of the movie theater. Everybody seems to be stomping their feet feeling the rhythm of "Beat It" or the ballad of "Heal the World". The movie documentary doesn't bring any of his tabloids or his weaknesses or any of the things to be sad about that brought Michael downhill during his last few years, but brought tribute to his raw talents. In conclusion, everyone will have a new perspective and will enjoy his songs for years to come because Michael Jackson is Legendary!

P.S. Hope this makes you want to watch the Movie.
