The Time We Killed (2004)
Interesting **few spoilers**
I saw this movie at Cine Vegas today. I was impressed with the camera work in this film. She double shot many of the scenes using different filters and then edited them together to produce an intriguing final product. She also dealt with the issue of 9/11. I like the fact that she used NYC as a backdrop for the film, but didn't dance around the reality which is/was 9/11. Although I don't typically like lots of voice over in film, I understand it was necessary in this film and therefore fine. There were also a couple good one liners in the film, like "Terrorism brought me out of the house, the war on terror sent me back inside." A must see for film students and agoraphobics. (agoraphobics better hope it is picked up by Sundance or IFC)
Beowulf (1999)
bad...just bad
If you've read the story of Beowulf before, don't watch this movie. If you haven't read Beowulf yet, rent the book from your library and read it. Even if you are illiterate the written version should be better for you. What is up with Lambert? He hasn't made a decent movie since the original Highlander. And the storyline to this movie had nothing to do with the original Beowulf. They should've just titled it `Christopher Lambert in Another Piece of Crap Movie.' The only thing this movie had in common with the story was the names Grendel and Beowulf. Avoid unless necessary!
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
great film
I thought this was a great movie. It was good to see Depp in a film that wasn't so gothic or dark like his past films; Sleepy Hollow, The Ninth Gate and From Hell. Those were all good movies, but I was happy to see him in something more comical. Geoffrey Rush did a great job as the villianous captain, and Orlando Bloom had a nice follow up outside of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The only thing slightly negative I can say about this film, is that it was a tad bit long. Other than that last half hour, I thought it was a wonderful flick.
More Dogs Than Bones (2000)
Nothing good to say.
Bad. Very bad. I wouldn't suggest it to my worst enemies. Through innuendo this movie basically describes America and its inhabitants as bloodthirsty and greedy. Even those who originally came from foreign countries eventually became tainted. (There are some people in this country that match that description, but not every single person) The direction of this film was also poor and it left decent actors (not the best, but what kind of talent would sign on to this project) with no chance of helping the film. Do yourself a favor and skip over this film when you are looking to rent something.
