Jacinta (2020)
Amazing, heartbreaking, haunting
Jacinta is a story of addiction and the struggle that comes with it for a broken individual. The systemic brokenness in America is felt deeply in this movie. Our lack of mental health in this country is generations deep and Jacinta is another product of this. Following Jacinta through her heart wrenching journey in and out of jail then back in for her own safety is so telling of the deep seated need for structure in the country when it comes to helping those affected by addiction and poverty. I can only hope that Jacinta, her family, and her daughter all find peace and hope in the journey forward.
Chico Bon Bon: Monkey with a Tool Belt (2020)
This show is adorable for kids, silly stem fun
My son gets a kick out of chico. The show has good helpful characters helping solve silly problems around town. It leans into childish humor and issues while also introducing critical problem solving skills and the thought process behind them. Its also good about showing the characters trying something, failing, and trying again! The first episode with the underwear parade is a little odd but its meant to again play into that childish humor. Kids love walking around in their underwear and yes of course you should teach them when is appropriate to be in their underwear and when isn't. Or just skip the first episode and enjoy every other hilarious and fun episode with your kids!
Play-Doh Squished (2021)
My kiddo loves it, we watch it as a family
This show is pretty adorable and has lots of fun moments for the kids. Watching the kids present their final builds at the end is great but the obstacle course where they have to find lids is cute but seems kind of pointless since the way it's set up now it just gives the team who already has an advantage even more of one. Maybe if the kids had to run the lids back to the parents who had to match them to containers it would add a bit more edge or guessing as to who is going to get the second advantage. As a family show it has great promise, it just feels like it's missing something. The talented sculptor Jason is under-utilized and the flow is a little clunky but overall it's really very sweet and tries its best to be fun!
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (2010)
Stop the 3D terribleness! So many good stories ruined...
Although I know it's rare for a movie to match the excellence of the book it was made from I thought that with the Narnian books being so short this one would have no problem sticking closer to C.S. Lewis' original storyline. But then they turned the character of Eustace into the comic relief, mixed up all the islands, left out almost ALL of the fun, cool, and weird things from the Dufflepud Island, made Lucy and Edmund whiny, envious babies, completely cut Ramandu's character, added some weird green mist which was just stupid/unnecessary, and inserted WAAAAAYY too many effects that you can tell were only used for the 3D version. I know liberties are taken when transforming from the written word to the big screen but why is it so many good novels are being ruined for the sake of 3D? They did the same thing with Airbender which should have been amazing... but definitely wasn't. BOOOOOOOOOOOOO to 3D. Yes it looked beautiful in Avatar and adds depth to animation but the story should ALWAYS come first and the actors should help you get lost in a movie, not make the mistakes more noticeable! A lot of the scenes are painful with poor acting, for example the scene where the mother is taken and the child and father are yelling for her. You can see Lucy smile while she's in irons before she tucks her head in her arms "scared", and the little girl's face is anything but pained with the loss of her mother... ugh. Lucy was really good in the first Narnian movie but I can't blame her for having trouble acting in a movie that doesn't give you any true inspiration to grab onto in the first place.
