Suchwiin bulmyeong (2001)
Too much drama
This movie is a portrait of human beings. There are no "the good ones" and "the bad ones". The characters are victims of their circumstances. The problem I saw in this movie was: there are so many stories that after 80 or 90 minutes the film becomes tedious and artificial. Every single story has a dramatic end. There are so many screams, cryings and dramas that it begins to be artificial. Although I know in war is impossible to have a big smile in the face; in this case is a drama after drama within a whole drama. Thus the movie loses its effectiveness. I think the movie must show more clearly the main story and use two or three stories, as maximum, to support it. I have seen better movies of Kim Ki Duk, that's why I rate this one with a 6.
Black Swan (2010)
Overestimated
I think this movie is not THE great movie that many people think. It is a mix from Wrestler and Requiem for a Dream. Natalie Portman's performance was very poor because I always saw her pretending to be a ballerina and no the ballerina herself. She never couldn't wear the skin of the character she played. In The Wrestler, for example, Mickey Rourke was much more convincing and was easy to forget who the actor was and get involve with the story. I found the movie full of dramatic effects but it's not effective, because everything is so artificial and full of clichés that disappoint every member of the audience who expected a better work than the last. I know that visual effects and music are an important part of any movie, but when these resorts become more important than the performers or the argument, then something is wrong with the movie. By the way, the argument is very predictable. At least for me, there were no surprises like in the previous works of Darren Aronofsky.
El infierno (2010)
A must see Mexican movie
"El Infierno" is a satirical approach to the actual social situation of Mexico. This movie was released few days before of The Bicentennial Independence Day celebration. That fact gives a plus to this movie because it shows in a "funny" way how brutal the reality in this country is. Director Estrada wants to show that there is nothing to celebrate in a Nobody's land, where the law is made for those to have the money to corrupt a whole system. "El Infierno" shows not only a harsh present, but also a hopeless future.
The main topic of this movie is, of course, drug-trafficking; but, in this case, is only a pretext to show that drug-trafficking is not the problem itself, because it is only the consequence of a very long "tradition" of arrangements between mafia and government. The most characters in this movie were very well performed. I said the most characters, because Maria Rojo's performance was not so good as the other actors. This movie is easy to see and although it contains brutal violence it will be never so brutal as the headlines at the daily news.
