The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
A chilling story
T was a very interesting & chilling movie. The thought that this woman could still be alive after all that she had been through was mind boggling. First, is that she was alive during the autopsy have all of her chest cut open and her organs removed. And then when doctor peeled back her skin to see the markings. (Shudder) And then when her skull was cut open and a bit of her brain sliced off. Can you imagine feeling all there and unable to move. This was a horror film. I wish that there had been more explanation of the other victims and maybe some type of history behind her, the witch. Maybe if there were a group of people that have protected the corpse down through the ages. She had a flower in her intestines that caused paralysis, so someone knew what they were doing. I would rather see that than the standard horror flick scary scenes. The girlfriend did not need to die. That added nothing to the story.
The Covenant (2023)
A movie to be seen with good friends
There are some movies to be seen with your wife or girlfriend. There are some movies to be seen with your family. This movie should be seen with your close friends. The relationship between Kinley and Ahmed was just incredible. The writers did a wonderful job with the script and Richie brought it all together cementing the relationship. In retrospect, I wish Richie had done more to show why Ahmed had that kind of fortitude and commitment. He did show that he had that to his family, but not to someone outside of his close personal circle. Was it his religious faith? Was it his cultural upbringing? Did his father teach him that? It would have been interesting to see that. I think it would have added to the story.
Lucky Bastard (2009)
I liked it, but I'm not mainstream.
I selected this movie due to the nudity and smoking listed in the warning. I like edgy movies, but these movies tend to not be very good and it is good to find a gem in the rough, which this one is. The main characters were well cast, even the antagonist. I've never worked in porn, but I would think this is how the characters act offscreen. The character of Mike (McManus) is what I would expect a porn director to be, friendly then mean then back to friendly, whatever it takes to get the project done. Then Ashley (Rue) is what I would think a porn actress would be, having the ability to block out what she just did, "It's just a job to pay the rent." knowing that she will deal with it later in life. Dave G./Ernest (Paulson) is an awesome creeper. Mike ignores all the red flags to get the job done. Ashely eventually acquiesces to get the job done. Paulson hides his psychosis to get the job done. The rest of the car does a good job of supporting the main characters. All this was tied together by the director keeping the energy high and the suspense ongoing. At least there were no scantily clad women backing into a dark room backwards. All this suspense was done in broad daylight in one day. I truly enjoy how the movie ended. No spoilers. Something I found interesting was that Ashely Saint was a producer. That is a unique name and the name of one of the main characters. It made me think that this may have been made from an actual event, but no. Nothing that I could find. It may have just been someone deciding to give the real Ashely some notoriety. Maybe. All-in-all, an enjoyable offbeat edgy movie.
The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)
Fun to watch.
Another apocalyptic space movie. Fun to watch, but that's about it.
Browncoats: Independence War (2015)
Nicely done fan-film
I'm rating this an 8 since it is a fan film and needs to be rated against other fan films and not corporate films, which I expect more from.
It has a good story with several subplots for character development. That works well.
Wow, the live fire scenes were straight out of Hollywood! Most were shot at night which added to the drama of the battle. So many guns, it was awesome. Loved it. The special effects were excellent, also straight out of Hollywood. For a fan film, very unexpected.
The acting, for a fan film, was pretty good, some better than others. There is one minor character that I think really shined above the main cast.
The cinematography was excellent. Considering the low budget of fan films, it was well lit, well shot and believable. As well as entertaining. Kudos to the director.
Now for a couple of critiques: 1. Fan films should not be feature length. That causes directors to put awesome scenes into the movie that really do not add to the movie. As some actors claim, their best scenes end up on the cutting room floor. 2. I liked the fire fights, but the Alliance soldiers suffer from the same ability as Stormtroopers. There are a few times where the Browncoats would have easily been hit, and weren't. Either hit them or have them in cover that makes sense that they weren't hit. 3. Some of the battle scenes could have been tightened up a bit. They are there to tell a story, not to showcase lots of lead going down range.
A couple of highlights: 1. The armored vehicles. For a fan film, where did you get those? Awesome! 2. The bad guy in the trench coat. I liked him. But when he pulled down the binoculars and showed that he was wearing a patch, I almost expected a joke there. 3. Great continuity. I suspect this was shot over a long period of time, but I saw no inconsistencies in costuming, make-up or actors. Good job.
Browncoats: Redemption came first and was a good try. Independence War was better, much better. All in all, a good movie that carries on the Firefly legacy.
Update-v1: I have looked at all the low ratings and I figure it is one of two things. Either they are idiots, or they are jealous of the work that this crew put in. There is no way that this movie rates anything below a 5. And should be an 8 or above.
Update-v2: I read several of the 1 star reviews. In spite of having different names, it's the same person. It's the same writing style, they just pulled up a thesaurus and replaced derogatory words with something similar. If the person were a true critic, they would have offered advice outside of attacks. It's one jealous failed person attacking others when they cannot perform themselves.
