Maryan (2013)
Sum, less than parts!
Mariyaan, which means immortal, is the about a fisherman and his love Panimalar.
The film is supposedly a fictionalized account of a true incident but buckles under the strain of a good screenplay. However it seems that an all out effort was made to prop it up with the support of the other departments but in my opinion, not very successfully.
Dhanush has done justice to his role as Mariyaan. One has seen him in such roles before and has surely seen better performances by him e.g., his much deserved National award for 'Aadukulam'. Parvathy as Panimalar is adequate. The cinematography cannot do what the script fails to do, but if shooting the sea in its majesty and its serenity, the underwater scenes, the barren sunbaked desert and wind blown sand dunes takes special talent and skills, Marc Koninckx certainly exhibits them.
There was a time when A.R. Rahman's music in a film used to bestow on a it a distinct aura which brought out the essence of that particular film. It was like adding that one magic ingredient to the recipe to make it what it is supposed to be. That quality has been lacking in Mariyaan, though individually some of the songs are very good, especially I liked the very melodious "Innum Konjam Neram". Nothing exceptional about the BG work in this movie.
Bharatbala's direction is competent but with all the resources that he had, he could have done a little better.
With all the star power the movie has it may prove to be a blockbuster, but as far as being worth the 2 hours and 30 minutes on my time, I felt was a let down.
