Boiler Room (2000)
Wall Street for the New Millenium
I have mixed feelings about this movie. When I first saw it, I loved it. Absolutely loved it. I felt better about myself for some reason, I felt more confident and wanted to go out and tackle the world. Now I see it, and I don't like it so much. It's by far Vin Diesel's best performance, and Nicky Katt is really good (he's great on Boston Public). Giovanni Ribisi however, kinda kills it for me. He starts out as this money hungry kid that wants to fall backwards into wealth without working for it. Fine, most of my friends are the same way. He slowly whines more and more throughout the movie, and by the end of it is even crying at one point. Besides him, Nia Long is absolutely beautiful. Simply gorgeous. I'm a finance major, and saw a few cracks in the script (like issuing IPO stock to small, first time investors) and play enough blackjack to know that no one should hit a 16 when the dealer will most likely bust. No biggie, the cars are great. Nicky Katt drives a Ferrari f355, yellow, and they actually show them cruising in it (instead of the typical movie where it just sits looking pretty). Vin Diesel drives a Range Rover, Ben Affleck drives a Diablo or a Lotus (just sits there in front of his house/work). Don't let Ben Affleck being in this sway anyone, he's good (big surprise) and is only in it three times. After considering it, Giovanni Ribisi is the only thing I don't like about this movie, and I usually like him. Very "hip" movie and everyone 20 to 30 will probably enjoy this.
Dennis Miller: Black and White (1990)
THE funniest stand up routine ever, I promise!
Hey you, yeah you. Are you tired of Jamie Foxx or Chris Rock or even Jerry Seinfeld? This is the stand up routine of stand up routines. He is so well spoken, straight and honest it is a must see for anyone with a funny bone that wants more than "fart jokes". Pretty old, he references when the Pope was shot at and forgave the person, "If you're like me you were hoping the Pope would reach over and say, 'You little, punk, bastard... If you EVER pull that s*** on me again, off with the funny hat and I'll put Popal foot up your Hindu a**!'" Absolutely, off the wall comedy. He's so synical it's a must see for anyone who thinks anyone else is stupid. The video itself is black and white, filmed in Tempe, Arizona, "Where a baby's first words are often, 'But it's a dry heat.'" Please watch, laugh and if you like it you'll probably like some of my other movie picks.
Troll (1986)
It's so bad, it's good.
This came out when I was 6, and I remember seeing it shortly afterward. It scared me then, but when I recently saw it again I realized how bad it really is. It's so bad, it's good. It is to horror what Zoolander is to comedy, they're so bad that they're good.
