How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
Dragons are so cool... Just like this movie
How to train your Dragon is good for so many reasons: It's fun for kids, the 3D is superb, the animation was cartoony but full of detail, the story had a lot of nice meaning, dragons looked pretty ruthless, plot was pretty awesome and what most surprised me was the beautiful cinematography. This movie felt like a real action movie for kids. By the first scene I knew it was going to be good. It was like watching the D-Day scene in Saving Private Ryan except not as violent. There were fire balls and swords and smoke and people running and fighting. It felt like an action epic. This scene is were you learn about the characters and what different dragons there are and the different species were very well thought out so that they weren't stuck with the same old dragons that have been used since forever. The story is pretty good. Its about Hiccup, the son of a legendary Viking, however Hiccup has never lived up to his dad's expectations and feels like he needs to prove himself by killing a dragon. During a raid from the dragons, Hiccup takes one of his inventions out to try and kill the terrifying Night Fury, which has terrorized the village for ages and no one has ever killed it or seen what it looks. Hiccup takes aim and shoots the dragon down. No one believes that he has killed this dragon so he goes to find the body and bring back its heart for his dad. When he finds it its still alive but has been immobilized. Hiccup frees it and it runs off. When Hiccup goes back, he sees that the dragon has not been able to get out of this forest because its tail has been torn and it can not fly. Hiccup soon develops a friendship with the dragon and tries to teach it to fly again. And then the plot really picks up... I wont ruin anything but it does get awesome, despite the lame love interest. So I say go to this movie it is really great, although sometimes a little corny, but only a tiny bit, it is still a really great action/family/animated movie and I highly suggest seeing it in 3D.
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Too Much in one Movie
I really enjoyed X-Men I think it was one of the best super hero movies ever. X2 was pretty good as well. But X-Men 3. Seriously what the f**k happened. This movie suffered from the More is Less factor. The director just tried to hard to put as much stuff in this movie as possible. Too many super heroes were put into this movie and then they tried to make each super hero have a super villain to fight with in the final battle. Another problem I had with this film is that it really did not stay true to the comic. X-Men 1 wasn't that true to the comic but it was a good adaptation and X2 was based on the "Return to Weapon X" series. X-Men 3 wasn't based on anything, "A cure to treat mutations" Thats not even a clever adaptation. They cured mystique. what the f**k. Another thing. They killed of the main characters at the start. Prof X and Cyclops both died right at the start and were then replaced with Angle who sucks and Beast who is awesome but wasn't portrayed well at all and really should have been in the first movie. Plus where was Nightcrawler. He was in X2 wheres he at now. The whole movie is trying to be unpredictable and its just horrible. Don't watch it. Watch X-Men and X2 just forget about this film OK just... no.
The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Scariest Movie Ever
For me Silence of the Lambs is the all time scariest movie, because its realistic. I'm more afraid of a sadistic serial killer than a monster that doesn't exist. The whole movie is eerie, especially the dialog. This movie is so well written and the scene when Clarice Starling first meets Hannibal there was no scary music or suspenseful build up to a fright, but i was still scared. The types of things Lecter talks about, eating people, murder, dismemberment, he doesn't even flinch at it. I think this movie has one of the greatest scripts ever, one of the greatest characters ever, one of the greatest plots ever and the all time greatest title ever, if you don't understand why its called "The Silence of the Lambs" I won't explain but if you watch the scene where Clarice talks with Hannibal in his new cell they explain it subtly.
Through out the whole movie I was really confused about what to think about Hannibal, I wanted to hate him because he is a murderer that eats his victims, but I always wanted the best for him... strangely. I really wanted him to escape from captivity and on some weird level I felt like Lecter and Clarice were friends. At the same time though, I found him extremely frightening. I guess thats what makes him such a bad ass character. The other antagonist in the film was a serial killer called Buffalo Bill who is murdering girls and skinning them. I found this character unbelievably scary because of his mystery. Some directors try and make the villains scarier by giving them more screen time to see what horrible things they are capable. I think when a character is seen more through out a film, a sense of familiarity is formed with the character. Demme made it so you didn't see much of Buffalo Bill, thus more mysterious and scary. Any scenes with him in it are extremely disturbing, like the infamous "Put the Lotion on the Skin" scene.
The whole plot is compelling and it's very rare for a film to make you feel like the main character was always in trouble. The way the whole mystery is unraveled is clever and well put together. If you are more into a cheap scare film with jumps and sh*t your pants moments I would suggest not watching this movie but if your into realistic horror and psychedelic thrillers The Silence of the Lambs is well worth watching. A nearly perfect film.
