Running on Empty (1988)
Weathermen live on ...
This is a story that had to be told. Why? The Weathermen were real . These were not apathetic hohums, they were patriots. They cared about the America they were leaving for their children. Is violence ever (EVER?) the answer ? You're damn right it is !!! Sorry, I'm digressing...
Hell of a movie . The scene that blows me away is #27. Annie meets her Father at a restaurants , to ask him to take Danny (his grandson). She starts to break down, almost immediately ; but keeps it together long enough to speak her piece. Donald keeps a semblance of detachment until she gets up to leave (after telling him she's sorry for the pain she's caused , and to tell her mother she loves her and loves him) then he breaks into sobs as she turns away... Both Christine Lahti and Steven Hill were honored with awards for their performances ( His ONLY scene in the movie !!! )
Unless you're a republican , see this movie !!!
California Jam 2 (1978)
Cal Jam Rocked all day and night!!!
I was there. I remember pulling off I-15 at midnight only to see a sea of cars trying to get to the parking lot. The feeder roads became parking lots and we partied till dawn when we finally got into the speedway.
Some of the musical highlights: Aerosmith,Heart, and Santana.I didn't see any fights and the ladies were fun and on my shoulders! Furthewrmore, Dave Mason was choice.Ted Nugent went crazy and climbed on top of the speakers. Foreigner: I loved the song "Star Rider and "Cold as ice" came at sunset in waves. Tequila was shared by our neighbors who came for Santana.I was 19 yrs old and on top o'the world !!! Stevie Nicks also made an appearance. She's hot. Ask anyone... Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush made the evening hours lovely until we couldn't find our car. Until sunrise when we woke to find we were only 50 feet from it. Much fun stealing a bonfire from some swabbobulars..
Anyone have a copy (DVD) they'd sell me? keeper275@yahoo.com
The Lighthorsemen (1987)
Movie magic !!! See it, now !!!
"Australia will be there" that song made for one of many, many fine scenes in an excellent film. I loved Anthony Andrews character : The British Intel Officer with a German name and his scene out birdwatching with the Aussie Sgt where he deliberately drops the satchel containing a forged "loveletter". I,also, loved the the previous scene where the nurse helped him in "creating" the letter.
The look of satisfaction on the Intel officers faces when they knew they'd fooled the Turks was great. The ending charge was highlighted (for me) when the Brit General said " Their under the Guns". Pure movie magic !!!
Lastly, as a former infantry soldier (US Army 11-H), it looked and felt believable...to me.Can someone please tell me the origon and meaning of "Pommy" .
A Prayer for the Dying (1987)
Killer flick. See it, now!!!
Let me start by saying that I was fortunate enough to be able to re-enact 2 scenes from this great film in college (theatre class). I played Fallon in the park meeting with Liam Neeson's character (played by another student). Our fellow thespians loved the intensity but were a bit perplexed by the slow pacing.Secondly, the scene with Fallon and the priest (at the pulpit)after Docherty is shot by his female partner.
Maybe it's partly because of my Irish heritage, but I LOVED this film. The soundtrack features some lovely pennywhistles and a bittersweet melody. I,also, enjoyed the Bach Fugue (sic) though Fallon's organ playing didn't look that realistic to me (I play).
Liam Neeson is wonderful, as always. The look on his face as Fallon turns away from him in the park is priceless. He knows he just signed his own death-warrant.Secondly, the previous scene where he announces "Here, here, I'll not go near this place" to the (funeral-worker) informer. What authority!
Some memorable quotes: "I once saw some writin' on a wall in (London) Derry ... that said: is there a life before death?" and "I don't wanna keep waking-up hearing the screams of young children, I lost somethin a long time ago...everything" and the ending when Fallon asked God to "Please, please, please forgive me" then dies in the arms of the grateful priest. Wow! Also, Bates is terrific as devil/angel crimeboss and that line "I don't think you quite know who I am, Father".
It truly could have been written about a mafioso or a gangbanger who is curved back in by people who believe he knows too much: ally or not The IRA wants him back (in their fold) or dead.Trust me : it happens daily in this country.
In my humble opinion: Like Mel Gibson's Hamlet , Rourke is surrounded by some of the best actors in GB and gives a nearly perfect performance. Nuanced and understated yet with a quiet intensity that should have earned him an Oscar (or at least a nomination).Who did he anger to be so vilified by Hollywood's honchos?
Lastly, Bates was said to have "chewed up the scenery" by a critic. Does anyone know what that means? Love to all, all over this blue planet !!!
