The Lost Samaritan (2008)
Excellent and Made by People Who Were Apparently Thinking Outside the Box
I have just finished watching this movie on TV and I hurried here to say how impressed I am by the superb craftsmanship behind it. This is not your average crime movie and I'm absolutely stunned to read the fiercely negative reviews by other posters. Didn't they notice the talented cast, the original touch of the creators and, most of all, the movie's emphasis on the power of coincidence?
Yes, there are many coincidences in this movie. As a matter of fact, as far as I'm concerned, it shows how a long string of unfortunate coincidences can move your life forward and determine your fate. As someone who has observed this aspect of life for a long time, I am beyond delighted to see how the authors of the movie, the person who conceived and wrote the script, are drawing attention to this as coincidence is something most people fail to notice. Is this why most posters on this page failed to see what is plain to me?
I guess they expected to see a plot that nobody has ever seen before. That's understandable but not everything that can make a movie great. Sometimes the beauty is in the details or in the way they fall and meet together. This is one of those rare movies for me. Please note that I haven't said a thing about the plot because I don't want to spoil it for you and get banned from IMDb - you have all the power to see it and decide for yourself and disagree with me if you wish, for that's your right. I just want to attract your attention to what I think is its defining feature.
I also believe that the story is very logical, indeed. Perhaps it is because, having seen how life has been a chain of coincidences for many people around, this movie appears entirely realistic to me. Beyond realistic, in fact. Others could call it "contrived" for the same reason but I would and will not. It just takes a pair of eyes and a bit of experience in the movie's direction to fully accept and agree with its viewpoint.
Thank you for listening and I wish a pleasant viewing to anyone who will brave the negative reviews.
Fatmagül'ün Suçu Ne? (2010)
Does anybody else think that this movie is completely idiotic and a total insult to women worldwide?
Here is my answer – I do.
SOME SPOILERS AHEAD
So a beautiful innocent village girl is gang-raped by four men in the very first episode (a couple of whom happen to be the sons of rich families) and she'll fall in love with one of them later on? OK, the man she'll fall in love with did not physically rape her – he just watched the others rape her and laugh at her as she cried and when his turn came, the only thing that stopped him from doing the same was
that he was too drunk.
Maybe it's only me, but I think you should be a terrible retard to eventually fall in love with anyone who watched his friends rape you and didn't move a finger to save you AND you must be a terrible retard to become a huge fan of such a story and find this setup even remotely romantic or exciting.
I can't believe that the so-called "love story" of Fatmagul (the rape victim) and Kerim (the one who didn't rape her but didn't help her either) has such a huge following. As far as I know, no normal sane woman can fall in love with someone who is even remotely complicit in her rape. I have no idea what the authors are trying to tell us but as far as I'm concerned, this movie's message is not healthy at all and is a profound insult to women's intelligence.
Now, other women who live for seeing "What is the fault of Fatmagul?" every night can strongly disagree with me, but every sane woman will see something abnormal about the authors' decision to make the heroine fall in love with anyone who was a part of her life-changing tragedy.
Beren Saat (the leading actress who plays Fatmagul) is a devastatingly pretty woman but that seems to be the movie's only saving grace. Also, the fact that the title is "What is the fault of Fatmagul?" somehow leaves a bitter taste in my mouth - am I to understand that there are people in Turkey who still need to be convinced that a victim of a brutal rape has no fault at all?
And
rather than turning their backs to this highly improbable, extremely contrived plot, many viewers worldwide can't wait to see the next chapter of Fatmagul's and Kerim's so-called "romance".
That's sick.
End of story.

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)
Muddled and slow does not intellectual make!
I picked this movie because I like Gary Oldman and because the title sounded very intriguing, indeed. Also, I had read a review which said that the movie required a thought process and offered an intellectual experience rather than lots of shooting and explosions. I adore intelligent movies because there is such a dearth of them, so I sat down prepared to see something extraordinary.
All I can say after seeing it is: "Where did the whole great idea go wrong?" The movie focuses on finding a mole at the very top levels of British intelligence during the Cold War in Europe. Halfway through the movie, I realized that I didn't care who the "mole" was anymore and this must be saying something about the extremely poor execution of the original idea.
One of the most frustrating things about "Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy" is the storyline jumps from past to present so many times that at one point you don't know where you are anymore – but what's even worse, you stop caring. That's because the movie fails to create any emotional involvement with the characters. The otherwise excellent Oldman does nothing but sit looking thoughtful all the time.
What a waste of talent because the movie is full of so many great actors! Gary Oldman, John Hurt, Colin Firth all seem wasted here. I can't even believe that this movie managed to generate any kind of Academy nomination and I have no idea what the reasoning behind this decision is. One more example of why the Oscars should never be trusted as guides of quality.
