Anuvahood (2011)
OK, but could have been better
Watching Anuvahood, it becomes clear very quickly that Adam Deacon the director was trying to make a British version of Friday, the classic American 'ghetto' comedy. Almost every aspect of the film has been influenced by Friday; for example the theme tune of the neighbourhood bully in Anuvahood is basically the same as the one in Friday but with a beat added to it! However, it doesn't come anywhere near to the brilliance of Friday, not even close! The main problem is that in Anuvahood all the main characters are played so stupidly over-the-top for the whole film (watch it and you'll understand). If you're looking for clever, subtle humour then look elsewhere.
Having said all that, Anuvahood does have its moments and overall it was quite entertaining (it is undeniably a unique and quirky film); some bits are VERY funny (my favourite was with the African traffic warden!)and it has some truly disgusting bits (one involving ketchup and feet). However, for most of the film I wasn't laughing, just thinking "Friday is so much better than this."
One more thing; if you're not familiar with the slang of the 'gangsters' in London, definitely don't bother coming to see it!
Iron Man 2 (2010)
Pretty crap
As soon as the film was over, my friends I just cracked up- it was awful! This was just another extremely predictable, clichéd, completely ridiculous and badly scripted movie. At many points during it you could be forgiven for mistaking it for a spoof of bad films, but no, this is a REAL film, not a joke.
The only good bits were all the action scenes; fortunately, although Hollywood churns out lots of terrible stuff most of its films have great special effects! Apart from that, there's nothing else of merit I can say really so I'll just say some more negative stuff. The plot was just so stupid and so many of the characters were just SO obvious (as in you get pretty much the same character in other films). Some of the acting was straight out of primary school drama class- as in, VERY BAD!! There was also some very irritating product placement; some parts of the film looked like an Audi advert.
Shutter Island (2010)
Thrilling
At the start, because of a few very poorly scripted lines, I was worried that Shutter Island was going to be a very obvious, very 'Hollywood' sort of movie. But by the end, it was clear that this is a very unique and excellent film! It had such a clever plot and there were many twists. Throughout almost all of Shutter Island, the tension was ratcheted up extremely high and I found myself genuinely very scared of quite a few of the scenes!
Some of the scenes were absolutely brilliantly done and were totally engrossing and moving; the cinematography of Shutter Island was fantastic! The acting was mainly very good and Dicaprio did a very good job of the main character.
This is one of those films which, when you leave the cinema, leaves you thinking very deeply- this is probably due to the fact that this whole film is basically based around psychosis. Any film that does this is almost automatically very good and Shutter Island is no exception to this rule- it's brilliant.
Kick-Ass (2010)
Disappointing
At the start it looked as though Kick-Ass was going to be a funny and different film; it seemed like it would be a "realistic" superhero movie with an interesting plot. However, although the 'superhero' (Kick-Ass) remained as a normal (although with lots of crazy things happening to him) character living in New York, a lot of the other characters- namely the two actual super heroes he meets- completely change the film into an unrealistic, clichéd American action film.
The thing I did like about this film however was that it wasn't afraid to be offensive. There was lots of violence, swearing and completely politically incorrect things that went on- which was all good! However, it was spoiled by a completely predictable plot and the fact that the director obviously didn't really know what kind of film he wanted it to be (realistic comedy or superhero movie). Also, the film at times seemed to be just an advert for Myspace and Apple as the product placement in it was just horrible!
Kick-Ass did have it's moments but it really didn't live up to it's hype for me- save your money for something else!
