The Walking Dead: Rest in Peace (2022)
Bittersweet ending
Bittersweet ending. What upsets me most is that no major character has died since Carl in season 8. All leading roles somehow became 'untouchable' unfortunately. When Melissa McBride departed from her spin-off I expected at least one more shocking death in the big finale.
Also the Commonwealth climax fell flat sooner than expected. In episode 23 the tension and tempo finally reached an exciting level and it lasted until 15-20 minutes into the finale. Sooner than desired the climax was gone and much time was taken to portray an happy ending.
Two heart touching moments were Maggie and Negan's final talk about Glenn, and Carol saying goodbye to Daryl. Two characters who were present from the first season on and had developed an unique bond. To see Daryl ride off on his motorcycle into nowhere was truly iconic and probably all dedicated viewers had already imagined for a long time that this would be Daryl's goodbye from the main series.
Rick's whereabouts were deeply intriguing but remained quite cryptic. I hoped they would have shown us a little more. If one or two episodes in this final season had fully focused on Rick I believe it would have been possible to make a fitting/pleasing end to the whole Walking Dead story arc. Showing where he ended up/making it out alive/Michonne finding him/making their way back home.
Hopefully in some form there will become more clarity about Rick's journey since he was taken away. A miniseries would be perfect I believe.
Overall The Walking Dead was quite a bumpy though enjoyable road. Season 6 including the premiere of season 7 were my favorite part of the show. Nevertheless I have always been dedicated to remain loyal until the end.
Andrew Lincoln's decision to leave the show and being able to be around his family more was fully understandable, especially because at that time the showrunners had no clear plan yet how and when to wrap up the show. Losing your main character is a major let down for a big series, especially when the point is reached to work towards the end of your storyline.
Then to find out that Robert Kirkman finished his comic book series only 9 months months after Lincoln's final episode aired. With a luckier timeline I believe Andrew Lincoln would have stuck around until the final episode. The way his arc now got a new turn in the series finale I hope we get to see some more Rick, as I mentioned before.
The Walking Dead did not always live up to its expectations and sometimes lacked a clear path, but definitely left a big mark in TV history.
Discovering Sophia as a walker (2.07), the Governor using Hershel to make a statement (4.08), Carol dealing with two psychotic kids (4.14), Carl losing his eye (made me shiver to the core of my bones) (6.09), Negan ending the lives of Glenn and Abraham (same shiver) (7.01), Alpha drawing out the borderline with heads on sticks (9.15), Negan's backstory (10.22). All will remain core memories of how TWD has shocked me through its entire run. Especially Carl in 6.09 and Negan in 7.01 have made me shiver more than anything else on tv has ever done. Outstsanding achievements.
EDIT: I missed the news that a Rick/Michonne spin-off was already announced in July.
Space Force: The Hack (2022)
Ambitionless 2nd Season
No rocket launches, space missions or big ideas this season, while the overview shots of the Space Force base were clearly taken from the season 1 footage. Netflix launched Space Force in style, having no limits, creative freedom and supported with a big budget in season 1. In episode 2.2, Budget Cuts, they already literally and figuratively acknowledge that they are not willing to go all the way for its second season.
Which is (budget cuts) the exact opposite of the direction I hoped this series would take. All season they are busy trying to financially save Space Force, in episodes of 95% dialogue, a small variety of locations and barely any action or physical comedy. I wish to see Space Force in its full potention, with big intrigues and exciting missions exploring space. For any entertainment value, the financial shortage aspect could have easily been skipped entirely.
Some other thoughts:
- The love story arc of Angela and Chan was kind of creepy, was already doomed to fail from the beginning and not one moment I hoped or cheered for them to end up together. While it filled a big part of every episode.
- It surprised me John Malkovich returned for this second season after reading the scripts. I always enjoy his work and as a big name in Hollywood, he could have easily left this sinking ship.
- It always makes me happy to see Steve Carell succeed. I clearly noticed he tried to make a succes of season 2. At times it was painful for me to see him struggling trying to save mostly dissapointing episodes. Just support this man unconditionally Netflix, with a team of good writers and a big budget, like you initially did when launching the series.
- The Europa Project and The Hack were enjoyable episodes in an otherwise mostly dissapointing season.
- I hope not to see another season like this. Unconditionally support season 3, or otherwise maybe it would be best to cancel the series. I will root for option 1 with all my heart.
Seinfeld: The Mom and Pop Store (1994)
Midnight Cowboy ❤
Midnight Cowboy being one of my favorite movies, this was an above average enjoyable episode for me. I loved all the references.
And on top of that Bryan Cranston as guest star, even though he was probably not very famous at that time yet. Nice to see him in his younger years nevertheless.
House of Cards: Chapter 68 (2018)
First decent episode of season 6
This is the first episode of the season that partly shows the writers can still write great storylines for House of Cards. Especially Doug Stamper's and Tom Hammerschmidt's storylines are very interesting and continue where season 5 ended. It gives impressions of how great this season could be if Frank Underwood was still alive. I miss House of Cards...
The Walking Dead: What Comes After (2018)
Wow!
This is the series finale, but also its pilot. Very well executed, impressive. I'm mindblown. Biggest impact since the show started in 2010.
