Green Lantern (2011)
I REALLY didn't like this film
I'd been wanting to watch this film for a while as I was curious about the latest superhero addition to the Avengers however I was very disappointed.
This film was predictable and cheesy (the dialogue was making me wince in places). This wouldn't have been too bad if it had some interesting characters and good acting but it didn't. There was virtually no character development and I was simply not convinced by the lead actor. It didn't help that his character was obnoxious and annoying (not in a good way like Iron Man) and the lack of character development ensured that he always was. Whilst the love interest seemed nice enough she shared the element of being a 2D character. The only person I sympathised with was the villain who was rather sweet.
The only good part about this film was that in one place the hero shows up all high and mighty with a gruff voice trying to impress his love interest but she immediately realises it is him. She yells: "I've known you my whole life Hal! Do you think covering up your cheek bones will stop me from recognising you?", or something along those lines. It was a brilliant moment because it is what should happen in SO many superhero films.
But apart from that, Green Lantern was really not worth the wait.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)
Most of this review is a spoiler: BEWARE
Having absolutely loved the previous three movies in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy I was looking forward to the fourth one, hoping it wouldn't be a cheesy let down that all series seem to achieve at some point. I was a bit unnerved by the fact that in one of the posters I mistook the new female lead Penelope Cruz for Keira Knightley. Not a good start. Anyways, I walked into the cinema with reasonably high expectations and was thoroughly let down.
Okay, bad points, let's start from the beginning. After the introduction informing us that the Spanish are after the Fountain of Youth (the name says it all really) it cuts to Captain Jack Sparrow who is running away as per usual. This time he's stuck with Gibbs in a carriage heading to god knows where. This is the first of the explanatory scenes that really annoyed me. They are discussing what Jack's latest goal is other than the obvious retrieval of the black pearl which has plagued him since the first film. They are talking about what Jack plans to do with himself and are generally catching up with each other. I prefer things to be shown through actions rather than sitting and having a nice chat when it comes to well-known action films like this. However they do manage to pique our interest with the mention of a Captain Jack imposter recruiting people.
They progress to their mysterious destination and Jack is forced to talk to the English King (Harry Potter fans will recognise Uncle Vernon at this point) who wants him to go to the Fountain of Youth for him to stop the Spanish claiming the land and glory before the English. It is at this alarming point that Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) comes into the scene and reveals that he's switched sides. Barbossa is no longer a pirate, it's rather disturbing to see his rough, scarred face and peg leg in the uniform of an honest sailor. Jack, who seems extra tipsy throughout the entire film, manages his amusing yet dramatic escape and the soundtrack kicks in with the music we all love, or at least recognise. Saved from a gunshot by his father who randomely turns up in the streets they go inside the pub for a drink. His dad warns him that the Fountain will test Jack before disappearing. Jack continues to go about his business starting with the imposter impersonating him.
A brilliantly choreographed fight then takes place in the back of the pub with Jack fighting himself. They even got up onto the struts in the ceiling. The whole scene is a bit too reminiscent of his fight with Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) in the first film for my liking however. Eventually he realises that his imposter is his old love Angelica (what kind of a name is that!?) who he later discovers is the daughter of ruthless Blackbeard: a fearsome, pirate who owns a magical sword. As the rest of the film progresses you realise it's all about Jack and Angelica in the midst of the search for the Fountain of Youth , plus a mermaid and Christian who are needed as part of the ritual to get to it.
Overall it is every bit as fun as the previous three films but it goes for the drama of the various couples. I couldn't envision Jack ever getting involved with someone who he has real feelings for, or as he calls them: "stirrings". His only love interest has been the Black Pearl as far as I'm concerned so that spoilt the majority of the film for me. The Christian and the mermaid seemed sweet but in comparison to Will and Elizabeth's romance in the previous three films it simply wasn't strong or angsty enough to keep your interest. The plot was ever present and brilliant of course and it's difficult to go wrong with Barbossa but I just don't think it was anywhere near as good as it could've been. However everyone has a different opinion, go see it and decide yourself.
The League of Gentlemen's Apocalypse (2005)
An oddity at its best
It's like Inception - only plottier (and better in my opinion)! It's a plot inside a plot inside a plot inside possibly a dream (?)! Everybody gets a happy ending (apart from Hilary) - I particularly like Herr's, Geoff is the hero and we get to see all the main characters in what I like to think of as James Bond outfits! It even stars one of the writers! The whole idea reminds me so much of that squid from Red Dwarf (for those who have never heard of such a thing, that's a good comment). I personally don't think it could get better than this, what a perfect way to round off Royston Vasey.
I've only watched the first series or so and random episodes from other series' of the League of Gentlemen due to my dad really loving it. I found it odd but generally liked it. Apparently I'm too young to get the majority of their humour so when I heard of this film I had my doubts. However these were quickly quelled when I discovered the main characters, I mean Herr Lipp (however you spell it) and Hilary aren't exactly my favourite characters, but Geoff? They really did something right there! And I grew to love the others just as much in the process, I couldn't help but sympathise with sweet Herr Lipp and I'm not sure why I ended up liking Hilary - maybe just his determination and evilness? My point is I liked the main characters.
As for the others I loved the baddie, and the way Geoff wrote himself into his story. Dr Pea was just so evil. I also loved the brief Simon Pegg scene as it was brilliantly funny and disgusting.
You can't help but love the ending too but I'll try not to give too much away. Generally it was completely superly awesomely brilliant! Sorry if this review is a bit rushed or contains too many superlatives but I've had quite a bit of popcorn watched a fantastic film and am mildly hyper. If you don't like this review, blame the popcorn.
Spaced (1999)
In one word: quirky
I watched this series during my Simon Pegg obsession (I can't wait till Paul! Haven't seen it yet but will do). Having recently watched Shaun of the Dead I IMDb'd it and discovered that Spaced was a good thing to look into if you liked that film. Instinct kicked in and next thing I knew I watched the 14 episodes on youtube in 2 days.
The writing is brilliant and really highlights the comic style of Jessica (this came as some shock to me as before Shaun of the Dead I'd only ever seen the actor in a really depressing Dr Who episode: the Family of Blood) and Simon. The camera-work is of course excellent as I'd expect from Edgar Wright. This is the same man who directed Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. All of those films are brilliant, all of those films are on my shelves. He just creates films with such a distinctive feel and look to them.
I now wish I hadn't rushed through things, I re-watched them today taking time to laugh and enjoy situations as they came about. I enjoyed the first episode in particular a lot more on second viewing as I came to appreciate the gradual growth of Tim and Daisy's friendship. Throughout the series it was frequently hinted at or suggested that maybe Daisy and Tim would become a couple, so I was a bit disappointed when I discovered not only how few episodes there were and that they didn't together. Oh well.
This is proper British sitcom material! It's so full of references which half the time you miss due to laughter. It probably doesn't help that I'm a 14 year old and haven't seen half of the stuff they're parodying...but I will! Eventually. It's quirky, hilarious and brilliantly acted. WATCH IT. You will not be disappointed!
The Sixth Sense (1999)
It's all atmosphere
This film is good, but it's all atmosphere. You need to get into the feel of it to enjoy it. If you don't like the atmosphere you don't like the film, it's as simple as that. I personally found it quite boring in places due to me not getting into the atmosphere. They took ages to say things or do things, like in the scene where the boy gives the father at the funeral the tape.
The acting of course is brilliant, you can't help but love the strange boy. He seems so innocent yet all the time is seeing these horrible things that come across quite scarily when you don't understand what's going on initially. Bruce Willis is good but I feel sometimes all he does is whisper and look depressed. I suppose that is his role but he could have put a bit more presence into it.
At for the plot it's great but takes a while to get going. The huge twist at the end I never saw coming because of the way they carefully interwove Willis' character into scenes. I never suspected it for one moment. So yeah, atmosphere but not much else.
Gnomeo & Juliet (2011)
Cheesiness kills
Definitely a film for kids as I found out, the cinema was packed with them! One kid kept on pointing out the obvious loudly behind me every now and then whilst another behind my mum was loudly asking questions. I suppose I should've expected it but it was still extremely irritating
The plot: brilliant, I have no problems with this! It follows the original Shakespeare play so very accurately yet in such a modern context. Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. I'm a top set English 14 year old who's forced to analyse Shakespeare's work in detail, it's what makes the whole conversation with the statue of him so good. It's awesome, and very funny. They even quote the play twisting the words round as well as scenes. You can find character equivalents in both productions (although I'm not sure what the Terafirminator is meant to be equivalent to).
The cheesiness overload was overwhelming, especially the whole dance routine at the end, one of the things that caused my dislike of it as there's only so much I can take (fortunately I didn't mind the huge amount of cameos so much). But I have another bone to pick with this film. At the start Juilliet (or however you spell her name) is portrayed as feisty as she flits around the gardens at night to retrieve her special flower however towards the end this changes and all of a sudden she's crying, glued down and turned into a DID (Damsel In Distress). Why!? So yeah, that's what I think. The first paragraph pretty much sums it up.
The Thief Lord (2006)
A fun kids film
This sweet children's film may seem predictable especially with Bo's plot device cough, but just wait. There are unexpected twists around the corner, it will take you by surprise.
The acting varied a lot throughout the film, I personally thought that the hero: The Thief Lord, was really wooden until you discovered a little bit more of his mysterious life then all of a sudden he got a lot better. Then he grew a few inches, and despite the brilliant acting at that point his hair really needed cutting. Bo however was really sweet and got the best lines and I grew to like his brother more throughout the film as it showed just how sensible and brotherly he could be. Even the "baddie" detective turned out to be a nice guy despite his bad bumbling mistakes in the first half of the film. The only real baddies were The Thief Lord's parents, you never see his mum but his dad is nasty piece of work.
As for the plot, it didn't stop but wasn't always a surprise. I was just waiting for them to discover that the money from the deal was counterfeit. I was quite surprised when it turned out none of the kids were really proper thieves though but it was a nice twist.
Despite the stupid mask do not expect Zorro-ness from this film you are robbed of virtually any evil and nearly everyone receives a happy ending. I was a bit disappointed when we didn't get to see Skippio tell off his dad for being such a meanie (are you allowed to call people names on IMDb?) to him but his telling off of the Aunt and Uncle make up for it.
This film is funny, cute and definitely for young children: a feel good movie all round, enjoy!
Knight and Day (2010)
It was alright...
This film is very James Bond. It's fun, it's flashy and has a reasonably twisty plot. Nuff' said.
The hero is a agent who is difficult to trust, is almost perfect in terms of witty banter and killing, drugs and drags along an innocent woman without her permission and in general seemed like a cardboard cut out to me. He never seemed to raise his voice above a whisper which annoyed me, same goes for his companion.
The heroine has a lot more to her, the film seems to focus more around Cameron Diaz then Cruise in this. It's interesting to watch her character's skills grow throughout it and then see her effectively getting what I like to think of as her own back on Roy towards the end of the film with the drugging.
Either way, the majority of the film is spent with one of the main characters being drugged or in a chase/fight/explosion scene. One of the few things good about this film is that the chase/fight/explosion scenes were good, yeah completely unrealistic, undramatic and Hollywood style but they looked cool. That's their whole point in the first place! See it for the effects, the fun and the plot, not much else.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 (2010)
Warning - Written By A Potterhead
I was disappointed by this movie on first viewing, I'm not sure why. One of those little things bothered me that I couldn't quite put my finger on. However on second viewing I absolutely loved it. I loved how: it started off with Hermione instead of Harry for once, your eyes were drawn more to Rupert Grint than anyone else (or at least mine were, his brooding was quite eye-catching), Ron and Hermione's relationship is gradually building itself up, the 3 brothers story was animated, Harry danced with Hermione (not in the book as far as I remember but a brilliant touch all the same), Dobby's shoes were awesome and it ends with a huge cliffhanger. The only problem with it was it missed out the ghoul in the attic that Ron said was his replacement in the book whilst he was off with Harry and Hermione (when it shows him looking grumpy and staring into the distance at the start after Hermione's opening it could've shown him sorting out the ghoul or at least mentioned it so it seemed like he was contributing the group effort. Or something!) and it also missed out a crucial line from the book which would've been very useful at the time after he destroyed the locket. Harry said: "She's always been like a sister to me, I thought you knew." or something along those lines.
Overall the film captured the grimness of the book (with virtually everyone dying apart from the main characters) yet through in a laugh every now and then. IT WAS OZZUM!
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
Good, but misses out a lot
As usual they've produced yet another fantastic HP Sauce (as I like to call it) movie. However I felt this one did not live up to the standards of the other films, or the book. It wasn't bad but it could've been better.
There was so much plot in the book, far much more plot than there was in the film, they missed out some crucial things (my brother has been reading this book lately, he's only reading his favourites. Do you know what made him read the books? The Lego Harry Potter game on Nintendo Wii. Mum can't quite get over that). For example it missed out: Winky, Dobby (instead of Neville helping HP with the first task), Barty Crouch's entire backstory, SPEW (I know it's not that important but they could've got Hermione to at least mention it from time to time), they didn't show enough of the quidditch world cup, they didn't show the veelas, they didn't show Fred and George's funding source, they didn't show Harry's conversation with Krum in the woods about Hermione and there's probably plenty more but I can't remember much at the moment. For those who don't have a clue what I'm getting at in this paragraph, read the books, they are awesome.
Overall it was good, but not as good as it could've been if it included a little more detail.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004)
Warning - Written By A Potterhead
Seeing the adverts and hearing my mum telling me about the dementors in this film (she has this irritating habit of telling you what's going to happen but no spoilers of how it ends! She just told me what she knew from the books and tried to get me to actually read some) and then finally watching it myself made me start reading the Harry Potter books. The film is brilliant! It couldn't be any more true to the book if you ask me. Awesome acting, soundtrack and I think Harry looks cutest in this film. However I won't vote on it yet as I think it deserves a re-watching soon (every time I re-discover this stuff it's just as good as the first time, I have to watch it again when I get the time).
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002)
Warning - Written By A Potterhead
This film I remember for being one of those rare occasions when I was child. One of those special little treats I wouldn't see often. I'd go over to a friend's house or a relative's and if they had that it would be one of my first choices. Now my parents know how crazy I am about Harry Potter they bought me the series of the films so far for my birthday and I re-watch it whenever I think to re-read the books (which automatically makes me watch all the films or watch all of a VPM or VPMS - see youtube). Just like the books it makes you want to read and watch anything Harry Potter related. Although it is not my favourite out of the Harry Potter films, I do enjoy it and I'm sure you will too.
How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
I feel high after watching this, in more than one sense
A brilliant film, even if it's not that true to the book. It's charming, funny, predictable and realistic. An impressive feat for something involving dragons. I want to watch this movie in 4D! Or in a simulator of some form.
Hiccup for starters is awesome, you can't help but laugh at his voice overs and it's clear from the start he seems to be the only viking in the village with any sense. Speaking of the starting, what a scene! It's a brilliant summary of Derk and shows everything in just a few minutes.
Toothless the dragon immediately made me think first of Stitch (from Lilo and Stitch) and then bearded dragons (a cool lizard, look it up on Google images to see what I mean), that reptile and almost alien feel is reflected whenever you see it. Yet it still retains the cuteness of a puppy with it's perky ears and big round eyes. If anything I was disappointed that it wasn't more scary for being the fearsome Night Fury. The animators have done a great job on all of the dragons, I love their specified abilities, the fire effects and just generally how real they seem. From what I've read of the book I now know they even included the points for each dragon quality like top trumps cards as they are displayed in the book.
As for the plot, it couldn't have been more predictable but I do not look at that as a disadvantage. The atmospheric charm of the skies catches you if nothing else does, it is something to look at, not something to be over-analysed (I suppose I'm hardly one to talk). However I do like the slight twist at the end, Hiccup loses his leg! You see characters go in and out of fires, huge explosions and god knows what else in all the cheesy movies (excepting occasional good ones that don't get by on impressive effects) yet they don't lose anything! Maybe a few relatives, but in the really cheesy movies not even that! Hiccup loses his leg. Now that's realistic. Half of the villagers in Derk have a certain lack of limbs, just because he's the hero doesn't excuse him. YAY!
The Fall (2006)
Was nobody else depressed by watching this film?
Please tell me I'm not the only one. i had no idea what I was in for as I'd only seen some of the effects explained by this special effects guy at a science-fiction convention. My mum later watched the trailer for it and my family found a way into watching it.
It was absolutely breathtaking but reduced me to tears several times, I mean seriously: the stunt guy's committing suicide or thinking about it every few minutes and the beautiful innocence of the little girl is almost painful in comparison! She has no idea what's going on in his head. The plot I found quite hard to grasp but you really have to pay attention to the opening credits and the seemingly unimportant conversation inbetween scenes. The actors are amazing, and impossible not to believe. As you progress through the film you notice how the girl's imagination and the broken stuntman's are using reality in their story to help it move along, you begin to recognise many of the characters they talk about in the story in the hospital.
Sure it has explosions, beautiful scenery and awesome acting but that doesn't stop the psychological side of things hitting home. I'm still thinking about this film a day afterwards. What really saddens me is that every film has a down point but it took so long for it to start turning up again in this one. The stuntman was only starting to get better at the very end of the film and I didn't find that satisfying enough, I wanted to KNOW whether he'd be okay or not. I know half of the people dying were just part of the story but that couldn't stop me feeling for them too. Overall I think that although it has it's funny moments I still found it very VERY depressing.
The Spy Next Door (2010)
Watch the Pacifier, it's pretty much the same film except it's good.
I only watched this for the laughs and stunts. As usual Jackie Chan is once again amazing when it comes to the fight scenes but it doesn't make up for the cheesiness of the rest of the film. It's the sort of film you can tell from a glance at the advert that it'll be bad and it was also very predictable. However it is good fun.
Most of the characters were brilliant in my opinion and Jackie Chan can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned. The baddie was funny but annoyed me slightly as he hadn't killed ANYONE! After a while the Russian accents got on my nerves as well. The only thing he killed was the latest trend his henchmen had brought for him to wear and that feat was not even impressive considering his age. As for the kids I liked the teenager and the little girl but the boy frustrated me. The teenager I liked because I'm a teenager with stupid parents and can relate, I liked the 4 year old because of just how hyper, cute and innocent she was however the boy seemed to be a bad actor and the clichéd bullies who were constantly following him around didn't help. Generally the kids as a whole annoyed me due to the fact that they didn't help "Bob" (god how I love that name) whatsoever and were much more of a hindrance when they knew what was going on but I did like some of their individual character. As soon as I saw Billy-Ray-Cyrus I began to cringe at the cheesiness thinking of Hannah Montana but he actually wasn't that bad, he was like the rest of the cast: good fun.
My overall thoughts of it were: cheese overload, but enjoyable.
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (2008)
A charming film.
My first thought after watching this film is the title for this review. The second thought was: how does Amy Adams do it? She playing a woman who's dating 3 guys in a line and yet she still seems so - for lack of a better word - innocent. It was so obvious that Michael was the one but the journey she makes through the film to realise that is one of the things that makes it so good.
My only problem with the film was the rather cringey scene towards the start where Miss Pettigrew was getting used to the ways of her charge and didn't realise that her boy upstairs was rather a big boy and walked in on him in bed. My favourite line in the whole movie had to be: "Sock him in the jaw!" It's a rom-com-drama and is brilliant. I'd recommend to anyone who likes that sort of genre.
Charmed: Forever Charmed (2006)
Why must it end!?
It's crazy, I don't know what to do in my spare time anymore now the series has ended! It was an amazing episode. My definite favourite out of all of the episodes in each series.
The acting was to a high standard as usual, the plot could have never been better and the time travel element to it was brilliant - it's always good to have a bit of sci-fi mixed in with fantasy in my opinion. A good time puzzle or alternate reality can get anyone interested, or confused. Especially me! I also enjoyed the rounded off ending with the flashbacks as it was nice to see how Piper, Phoebe and Paige all ended up with their husbands and children. In general my only regrets were that:
a) it ended there,
and
b) we didn't see enough of adult Chris for my liking.
I want a spin off show focussing on the boys! Grr.
Monster House (2006)
The kind of film you have to know the end of but not the kind you'd want to see again
What really annoyed me about this film was that it was so unrealistic. This probably sounds like a stupid accusation: it's an animated movie about a monster house, but still there were some things in it that spoilt the whole thing for me. Such as: a house exploded and nobody seemed to notice or care, the only police that were involved went missing and nobody came looking for them, a house got up and walked around and nobody seemed to notice it or the path of destruction it left behind, a man fell unconscious on top of a boy and the poor kid wasn't told anything by the people in the ambulance about whether he was okay or not (wouldn't he need to get a treatment for shock or something!? He was under the impression that he'd murdered someone! How come no police were informed?)and anyone who was supposedly eaten by the house wasn't looked for, you get the gist. I didn't expect this list to be quite so long, but when you look at the entire film logically I didn't even see any cars on the street just when the monster house is stomping across the road, how convenient. In fact there hardly seemed to be any cars on the road, but maybe i'm just getting paranoid that can't be too unusual. Oh and whilst I'm complaining why on earth did Nebbercracker have dynamite in his home!?
On a more positive note the characters were interesting, especially Nebbercracker. I could tell that he clearly had some sort of motive, when you saw the look on his face you knew everything he was feeling. I certainly began to develop hunches. Yet he still managed to be truly creepy. As a friend once said to me: if a boy is spying on the old man across the street it's called paranoia, if the old man is spying on a boy across the street it's called something else. As for the 3 main characters I liked DJ the most. He seemed much smarter than his friend and had a fair amount of common sense which was good because I absolutely hated Chowder. He got on my nerves big time for not being a very good friend and for being incredibly stupid at times. He'd seen all the signs that the house was dangerous but as soon as the owner's gone he happily jumps all over it's lawn, if it's a monster house surely it doesn't matter who's there or not. As for Jenny I thought she was okay, she certainly brought a lot of sense and planning into their attack but didn't seem to have much else to her other than being pretty. I thought Constance was a very misunderstood character portrayed brilliantly by the animation and script, I felt sorry for her even when she was trying to get rid of the heroes. Probably due to my dislike of Chowder...but never mind.
Toy Story 3 (2010)
Good as the first 2 films and better!
This film has everything! It has the comedy (of nearly anything in the film), it has the thriller of the escape, it has the villain's back story, it's got the romance between Buzz and Jessie, it's got a brilliant general plot, I could go on forever. I particularly loved Spanish Buzz. It lived up to my expectations fantastically and made the other 2 films seem almost pathetic in comparison. I looked the previous 2 films up on here and both the ratings were gradually going up by 1, the first was 7 the second was 8 and this is a 9. My only query is to why it was done in 3D, half the time I barely noticed being so distracted by everything else going on in it.
Iron Man 2 (2010)
Not Bad
I consider this movie pretty good. Not as good as the first one but it's been a while since I last saw either of them so don't trust me too much on that. Mostly I enjoyed it and here's why.
Iron Man 2 attempts to be great by bringing in graver situations and a deeper plot. Like all sequels it's trying hard to go one step further than the first film. I think the graver situation is a brilliant idea (I've always rather liked grim movies) and the solution to it was good too however the more complicated plot had me confused a lot of the time. Several new characters were introduced and next thing you know they're diving into the story like there's no tomorrow. I like that aspect of it. But I think plot-wise this is one of the films I'm going to have to watch again to understand and get a thorough grip on. I'll let you readers decide whether that's a good thing or a bad thing.
As for the script, it's fantastic as usual and the actors really make it come alive. Robert Downey Jr. is brilliant as always, it's so good to have a hero who can be obnoxious when he wants. I'm beginning to get so tired of those good-doers, but back to this film that side of him was more shown in the first. Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr. know what they're doing; they both make the characters seem incredibly realistic with their own strengths and weaknesses despite the fact that one of them is a superhero. Their chemistry is very real and I liked the way the script captured that every now and then inbetween action. As for Iron Man's buddy Rhodey he's had an change of actor and a bit of character too since the first film if you ask me. Who else would beat the crap out of a drunken iron man? Who else would steal one of his best friend's suits? I'm still not sure whether I like those two ideas or not...anyways I think the new actor for him isn't quite as good as the previous one. He still manages to be funny but that's more because of the script than him. I don't know how to describe it but he just hasn't got the same presence as Terrence Howard.
Overall I think that being the sequel it has to live up to the first film and it certainly does in some respects trying as hard as it possibly can to do so. Generally that's good enough for me.
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
Be one with the Matrix!
I think this a brilliant film. It's very dark but that's hardly unusual for a film in the Matrix trilogy, I think if you give it a chance and properly believe you will love it like I do. It's still got Keanu Reeves in it. So I think it's win win! In this film you explore more of the "real" world and Tank gets replaced having been killed off, I think his replacement lives up to Tank quite well too. The oracle's performance is great as usual and seems more playful than in the previous film. Gloria Foster does her last job as she dies during filming of the movie. However that does not stop her performance from being excellent. I also found the film far more interesting than the first Matrix film, this is where the action gets going! My parents were complaining that the plot went downhill in the last 2 Matrix films but I'm certainly not and even they were beginning to doubt their disbelieving thoughts. All I have to say is it is brilliant so believe in the film and you will love it!
The Lake House (2006)
'Tis awesome
I've seen many romance films ranging from Twilight to Penelope and more but this is the first ever romance film I've seen that I properly enjoyed and it's not just because this film has Keanu Reeves in it (or at least I don't think it is...either way he's seriously hot)! It's really shown me what Sandra Bullock can do too. The only reason I knew that she existed was originally because of Speed which I watched some time ago (it was brilliant by the way - I recommend it to all thriller lovers) and now after watching The Lake House, I have to say she's a brilliant actor. They are both so very believable. The plot of this film is brilliant too, time travel by magic mailbox when there's not even internet around (I'm not sure whether that counts as a spoiler or not. Oh lets say it does just in case I say it doesn't and get blacklisted.)? What an amazing idea! Magic mailboxes rule.
