Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013)
Mandela
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is a pretty good movie for what it is worth. I saw it two weeks ago and it still has me thinking about Nelson Mandela and South Africa and generally I think that is a mark of a pretty good movie, if it still has me thinking about it or its subject matter that long after leaving the theatre. I actually learned a few things I did not know about the Mandelas and their cause in South Africa other than just the Apartheid fight that we all obviously know about. I'm not sure how historically accurate the movie was but again the movie had a view and got me thinking about it so it gets points for that. There was some violence in it so be careful about letting children watch this before they are ready.
Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)
Perfect Movie
I think that Grosse Point Blank is a perfect movie. I have to admit I didn't get the title until after I watched the movie and somebody had to remind me that the name of the city in Michigan where he went back to was Grosse Point, then I got the word play of the title, I guess I just wasn't paying attention enough during the movie. But I've seen it several times since and it's always great! John Cusack is amazing in this as a hit man who has professional troubles and goes home for his high school reunion, where things are obviously awkward with Minnie Driver, the high school sweetheart he left behind. The soundtrack of this movie is really amazing with some fantastic songs from the 1980s. Dan Aykroyd is great as a chubby rival hit-man who wants to start a hit-man "union" and Alan Arkin as the therapist who doesn't really want to be the therapist and Joan Cusack as John's capable assistant/secretary are both also perfect in their supporting roles. Great, great movie!
Hard to Kill (1990)
What You'd Expect
This movie is exactly what you would expect of any Steven Seagal movie. If you haven't seen a Steven Seagal movie, basically he walks around like he is made out of concrete just intimidating people with his jaw and his pony tail. It's very funny sometimes but the humour is never intentional, he is just so intense and the action scenes are over the top crazy. He basically kicks people through walls and slaps nine guys at a time around the room and they are totally powerless against him. For what it is worth it is definitely an entertaining way to pass the time, just check your brain out and sit back and enjoy the craziness of Steven Seagal!
Hiccups (2010)
Bad Idea
It was a bad idea for everyone involved with Hiccups to do this show. After doing Corner Gas both of these talented actors should have taken time off and waited for a very good script for a movie or another TV show to come along, or just retired since they must have a ton of money saved up from doing Corner Gas for so long. Hiccups just is not a good show at all. Dan for Mayor was a very bad show and if anything this show is at least as bad as that. All of these people should have been more careful and selective before diving into these new shows, which just were not funny at all. I really wanted to like these shows and kept giving them a chance but it just disappointed every week until I gave up. Bad show and bad idea to do it. I hope they wait a few years and then when the right idea comes along they do that and are very successful with it!
Yogi Bear (2010)
Skip It
My advice for this movie is definitely to skip it, it is very boring and unfunny, as an adult I would say it is about a 1 out of 10 as far as my enjoyment for the movies went but for kids even this is a very poor effort for a movie and I give it 4 out of 10, I think the rating for this movie is fair where for most IMDb ratings I would disagree as too high or too low of a rating. The voices are okay but the jokes are all bad, unoriginal, unfunny. The story is bad and I didn't think it had too much of a connection with the old Yogi Bear stories. I don't like Justin Timberlake in most things but his Boo Boo voice was pretty good here. Dan Ayhkroyd is wasting his time in this movie he must need a good quick pay check.
Mighty Ducks the Movie: The First Face-Off (1996)
Good Movie for Kids
This is a good movie for children. I do not see why it only has a three out of ten rating on IMDb's rating system but you have to realize it is just a children's movie so of course adults are not going to like it so much. The Mighty Ducks is one of the best children's TV series ever in my opinion and I am basing it entirely on what my kids watch without complaining. They watched this movie probably a hundred times and I am not exaggerating, they just really like the animated characters and the hockey. I hated the show because it got very boring very fast. I laughed, I learned, I cried. None of that actually happened I am just trying to get to the mandatory number of lines they say I have to write. This Mighty Ducks movie is a perfectly fine movie for kids to waste their time watching.
The Ron James Show (2009)
Not Good
Unfortunately this show is just not very good. I wanted to like it and I tried to like it but there was just nothing in any of the episodes I saw that made me like this show even a little bit. Some of the stand up comedy that Ron James does on the show is OK but it is very short, has nothing to do with the rest of the show which is all made up of sketches, and just makes it more obvious how completely awful and void of jokes the rest of the show is. Ron James is not a very good performer outside of doing his stand up comedy sadly and the other acting is very bad too. The writing of the sketches is terrible. The jokes are like they come straight out of a child's how-to-write-a-joke book with jokes you can see coming like a freight train.
Puck Hogs (2009)
Bad
I saw this film at the festival and it was just so bad that people walked out. I watch a lot of movies and I have never once walked out of a film but I was so bored and even literally offended by how bad the jokes in this movie were that I almost walked out. I almost walked out of "Threesome" when I was younger at the theatre and then I almost walked out of this movie years later, and the only reason I didn't was I was worried the cast and or crew would be there and I did not want to offend anybody. I found myself looking at my watch thinking the movie must be a half hour in and seeing only eight minutes had passed. The entire audience was pretty quiet through out except for a few forced sounding/polite laughs. The acting was not very good (tho def not terrible) and the big problem was the writing/direction of the film, the jokes were all very bad and predictable and yes the acting could have been better, just seems like a really amateurish production to me.
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (2009)
Really Really Really Really Really Really Bad!
Late Night with Jimmy Fallon is just about the worst TV show I have ever seen. I don't know when late night TV started getting bad but even in a sea of worse than average late night TV shows Jimmy Fallon easily stands out as the worst late night host/show there is on TV. Letterman used to be awesome but he is getting older now, and then Conan was great but once he moved to take over Late Night he just wasn't as good and eventually got pushed out/quit so Leno could go back. Leno was never funny to me but he is still head and shoulders about the Jimmy Fallon show. Fallon can't interview guests properly, can't deliver monologue jokes, can't do comedy skits, can't do anything! The writing is really bad too but shouldn't they either have good writing or a good host? Why did they have to have awful everything! At least the band is awesome, why are they even on this awful show? Not enough to save the show though, I can't stand watching for more than a few minutes, it's so bad.
Dan for Mayor (2010)
Boring!
This show is boring. The jokes are painful, it is even worse than the last season of Corner Gas where it was just in the same rut of doing the same predictable jokes again and again. First of all, the main character of Dan is basically just Hank without the baseball cap. I mean literally, he plays e x a c t l y the same character he did in Corner Gas except he is not wearing a hat. That is the only difference. He is a complete moron who has his head up in the clouds. The basic plot of the show has him running for mayor to try to impress people, then I guess it's supposed to be really funny because he is an idiot and screws things up. The supporting cast is also very bad but you can't blame them with material as bad as this. This show was a huge mistake and it's a toss up for me whether this is worse or Hiccups is, both of these shows are just awful.
