Charmed (2018)
Trying too hard or not at all?
I'm halfway through the season and this reboot continues to be disappointing. This would be two in a row for CW in one year alone. I really thought better of them than this.
There are a lot of changes from the original, many of which I consider unnecessary. Though I would understand these changes if the goal is to unite existing and new fans. The beauty of a reboot is to start with an existing fan base ready to provide you those numbers which keep a show alive and to grow from there. The challenge, with this show, is when the changes are not about developing a good story. Instead this show comes off with the intention to insert "their" political agendas and remind everyone they are relevant and diverse on paper but not in mind.
This show tries too hard to be different and unique from the original. These differences are targeted to aim and fire hysteria through the screen by forcing down opinions to the audience and highlighting the issues continuously plaguing our cultural identity. Instead of showing society how to improve upon our differences this show decides to repeatedly load the gun, aim and fire.
Instead of being an entertainment show filled with magical adventures it subtracts from these qualities with lines targeting specific viewpoints of modern society standards to feed our natural aggressiveness on the current issues. The show consistently digs its feet in the potholes of our cultural gaps down the shaky road to societies destruction. The least it could do is present all sides of the story through each of the characters instead of pure judgement echoed by the "Charmed" bullies of what they believe constitutes the face of today. Ask yourself CW, what message are you trying to send?
I hope for the best to those acting in the show as my review is not a reflection of their trade though I do wonder what this says about them as role models. My biggest concern is the writing. As Hemingway stated "Show the readers everything, tell them nothing."
