The Tunnel (2013)
Do Not Watch this if you have seen the original Swedish danish version
sega the female detective in the original version has now been copied twice, this one and the American version of the bridge, and both actresses have come up short, the scriptwriters have attempted to alter the story lines to suit their own needs, and maybe in some ways to distinguish between the differing series, but here it falls flat on its face, i don't think the original female character can ever be replicated because the uniqueness of her acting, she has a way of doing things that are unique to her both as a character and an actor. the way this one differed from the storyline in the original is just way too off, it became disjointed not at all smooth like the original, the acting and the characters here are non compelling and hard to become involved with.this is the main reason for its failure, even as a stand alone series, it doesn't grip you as the original did, to be honest if id been producing this I've have gone and signed up the original actress and hoped her English was up to scratch, so whether you've seen the original or not, this is not good.
I Melt with You (2011)
Offensive film and very very sad, but not in a good way
This film is typical American typecast, the aspiring people, anyone can be President bull that seems to be at the core of all things Americans say and do. Four teenagers aspire to be great men, not great Presidentially maybe, but nevertheless great. They come up short, one cheats people ones a failed dad etc, the same normal things that become us all, American or not. So they decide to summarily commit suicide because they've turned out to be nothing like who they swore they would become. There is nothing dark going on here, this is twisted ideology turned into something way more sinister, taking your own life because you thought you'd be a better person?. I honestly thought there would be something on the note along the lines of we killed someone and now we cant take the guilt anymore. Imagine my surprise when you find out what was written? All utter nonsense, there is nothing at all to recommend this film, really nothing at all. It is even more perplexing to read some of these reviews to find that people can find apathy with these four idiots. Wait hang on a sec isn't that what I'm trying to say, Americans seem to aspire to greatness at all costs, even if it means topping yourself for coming up short.
Warm Bodies (2013)
Ignore the bad reviews
I must emphasize I was not a big fan of the zombie genre until the walking dead came along, and even that creeps me out a bit, but when I saw the trailer for this I was intrigued.
I'm not going to bore you all with a complete rundown of this film, I'm just going to help you decide whether its the cinema or DVD.
Both is the short answer, its one of those films you could watch over and over. It has lots of humor and lots of love, and not too much gore.
It was also good to see Nicholas Hoult again, hadn't seen him since About a Boy, though he has done quite a lot since.
So ignore all the bad reviews and let this movie take you on its journey, and let me tell you its a funny one.Enjoy.
The Sweeney (2012)
Very very disappointing
This review is going to be aimed at most of the people who never actually saw the TV series from the seventies. The film is of course badly misplaced in todays climate, the police of the modern force have ethics, standards, duty of care and such like, things that were for the most part overlooked in the seventies. The original Sweeney was in its time a slightly over dramatised account of how a special branch of police officers got results by whatever means necessary and it was riveting. The main character Jack Regan was the meanest toughest cop on the block and boy did everyone who watched it knew it. Winstone has played his share of villains, but is totally out of sync here, he is neither a good cop nor a mean cop, he is something in between, so if you are after a run of the mill cop film, get some popcorn out and tuck in, but if you tune in expecting Winstone to be John Thaw you will be as I was completely let down. The only other thing would be the relationship Regan has with his fellow officer, it just wasn't believable.
One Day (2011)
Don't believe the reviews this film is dire
Saw this recently having heard so many good reviews, mostly regarding Anne Hathaways accent. From the start this film was ridiculous, Hathaways take on the accent was at best clumsy and Jim Sturgess seemed lost and a little ill at ease playing opposite this superstar actress.
Whilst the concept was quirky and original the total unbelievability of the love story made it tedious and boring.
There was no chemistry at all between these two, in fact I would go so far as to say Hathaways character had all the traits of a serial stalker. Sturgess' character had no feelings of love for her until the last 20 minutes by which time Id had enough.
He was in effect pushed on her by by his own partners affair with his best friend, hardly the love story of the century.
The death of Hathaways character was a relief, because for me it summed up the whole film, a complete was of time. There was no point to her death, the film would have been at least salvageable if they had gone on to live happily ever after.
To sum up,if you want a good cry, watch it through to the end, I cried for a different reason,it cost me £3.95 through Sky box office.
John Carter (2012)
John Carter, not quite the disaster portrayed
There are an awful lot of reviews on here regarding this film, It never ceases to amaze me how much analysis takes place when reviewing a sci fi movie. This movie is very watchable, its not meant to make any sense at all, its set on Mars for goodness sake! The main character, JC or Virginia as the natives call him strolls effortlessly through the endless CGI and the acting is pretty sound. Most British viewers will recognise a lot of the Actors, though quite why the leading lady speaks with an English accent Im not sure( shes a Texan ).The only real negative for me was the similarities to Star Wars characters( Ep1 etc). That aside if you want to watch an entertaining fantasy adventure that's full of CGI and has no sort of real story you could do a lot worse. Bag of popcorn and some Ben and Jerrys, put your feet up and get a thoroughly enjoying two hours entertainment.
Never Let Me Go (2010)
mixed emotions aplenty
I have not read the book this movie is based upon, and I try not to get drawn into the debates of books vs films debacle. Go see a movie for certain entertainment, read books for another kind.
The emotions this film stirs all come with tears, but unlike other reviews I've read, they are not all with sadness. Carey Mulligan is able to pull off convincing the moviegoer of her intense, vulnerable, joyous and doomed love for Tommy. This love resonates throughout the film, and this is something few actors/actresses seem able to pull off with such conviction. The depth of Kath's love for Tommy is the main source of tears. I was totally absorbed in her naivety and vulnerability, caused by this love.
The film is mostly about sad things, but it is a fictitious storyline that is at best ridiculous and must be overlooked. The fact that the film is set in the 70's and 80's (probably the same time line as the book) just doesn't ring true, but is far superior to a similar premised big budget film like The Island(Ewan McGreggor).
This film was totally enjoyable, and ideal entertainment for anyone over 16.One of those films I'm glad I watched, if only to discover the amazing acting qualities of Carey Mulligan.
