Disenchanted (2022)
It had its own charm
I think Amy Adams was great in this movie too. Although in some ways it isn't as good as the original, in other ways I think it stands on its own. It was touching and beautiful at times while cheesy in others. I could see they were paying tribute to other Disney movies in scenes but other times were poking fun at fairytale tropes (but I think the first movie did that too).
I didn't think the songs were that great but I enjoyed a couple of them. Visually, I thought it was very satisfying. Good effects. I don't love the animation style but I can't put my finger on exactly why.
Overall, I enjoyed it. It was fun, good storyline, and sweet. Worth watching. How much you enjoy it probably comes down to what you look for in a movie but it think this was a solid sequel if you loved the first one. Hope you like it too. ^_^
Before I Disappear (2014)
One of my top 10 favorites
I love the dark humor, the creative way they present the story, and the wonderful story itself. For me, it packs an emotional punch. The set up and pay off they have regarding being honest, gets me. If you don't enjoy dark humor in a rough setting like this then the film wouldn't be for you. Instead for me, the story touches my heart every time and they had a wonderful balance of humor, serious topics, and interesting/creative imagery. I've rewatched many times and I wish more people knew about it. The acting was great and I find it to be a much improved version of the short that came first (called Curfew I believe). I finally got my husband to watch it too and it ended up being on his top 10 favorites as well even though it wasn't something he would have normally chosen to see.
Aladdin (2019)
How could this be my favorite?
This movie has a lot of things that I look for in a movie. This movie being great depends on what you're looking for. Disney's animated Aladdin was one of my favorites growing and I always dreamed what live action versions would be like. I knew it had to make changes since some things that work for animation, don't work for live action and vise versa. I care about keeping the spirit of the story the same, the general feel, character personalities, etc. I think Will Smith did a good job as genie since if he acted as ridiculous as the cartoon, I think it would come across as childish and cringy. He kept the fun spirit. Aladdin's character was perfect to me. Jasmine, my husband didn't like since he thought she was too feminist while I thought she was pretty much the same. She had attitude and was cocky in the original too. They made changes that at least made sense. As a woman myself, I love feminine characters that can be brave humans without fighting, since I prefer the male leads to fight to save the damsel. (She not useless either). Basically when it comes down to it, it had so much of what I look for in movies: sweet romance, pretty dresses, man saving damsel, fantasy, great humor, danger, excitement, fun, and the cherry on top for me is that it's a musical. I enjoyed some of the songs more than the originals. Also I adored the added character. She'd be my best friend if she were real.
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)
This was my favorite movie for years
Loving a movie partially comes down to taste and what you look for in a story. I love the humor (the sheriff is amazing) and it has the fun 90's family movie feel that I adore. Marian keeps her femininity but never is a useless character. (I'm a woman and I love feminine women in dresses for movies). There's excitement, danger, and fun; with a male hero saving his lady love and I live for these kind of stories.
I will say that I absolutely hated the extended version of the film. They added nothing good and didn't improve the story at all but rather made it worse for me. I was extra upset when I realized that buying that version doesn't even come with the original. So I gave it away. The original you have to turn the disc over halfway through even though it's standard length. I don't get it.
Cang Lan jue (2022)
The female lead is really annoying
I was really looking forward to watching this since I heard it would have a beauty and the beast feel. I like sweet and naive characters but she is too much. She uses a pouty child voice almost constantly. I thought the series was short so I thought I could just get it over with since the story could be worth it. Realizing how long it is, I had to quit after almost finishing episode 8. Her actions, mannerisms, and voice ruin the whole show for me. If you watch some of the show and you find her cute to watch then I assume you can enjoy the whole show. If she's annoying to you, I recommend watching A Korean Odyssey instead or something since that still has some of the same story vibes (villain having to protect her even though he wants to kill her but they ultimately fall in love) but better characters.
Ibeon Saengeun Cheoeumira (2017)
Almost like it's dumping on marriage
I watched this since I was in the mood for a sweet romance where a fake marriage blossoms into true love. This ended up not being that for me. I'm a big believer in marriage and watched this because of the premise but overtime it became very frustrating. I didn't enjoy the side characters story/romance and tried to just focus on the main characters but the last few episodes we're so frustrating I wanted to just get the series over with. The logic of the female lead toward the end was unbelievable and ridiculous. I guess the story wrapped up "okay" at the end but it was very unsatisfying for me. The drama heavily pushed the idea that love is what matters, not marriage; to the point of making marriage sound worthless and stupid. As I watched the last few episodes I felt like the writers themselves must not believe in marriage with how the idea of it was portrayed but perhaps I'm just too traditional to enjoy this type of drama.
Purple Hearts (2022)
Why did they like each other?
The movie was alright and I had high hopes for it starting off. They were both flawed people and I couldn't wait to watch their characters grow, understand each other, and become better people. In some ways you can say his character did. He changed his life, took responsibility for his actions, and was generally a good guy. I didn't mind that the girl starting out assuming the worst of him, being overly aggressive, rude, etc; my problem is she never stopped. By the end of the movie, I genuinely wondered what he saw in her since she was so unlikable overall. Of course, she was "gentle" and "caring" a couple times but not consistently. It always felt like it was for that moment only; not that she finally changed toward him. Disappointing. I'm a woman myself and I hate watching lead women being so aggressively rude in movies these days and getting away with it like it's appropriate and even appealing.
Maid (2021)
I swear the protagonist is the villain.
First the good: I thought the show was interesting and I enjoyed the acting. They seemed to give most of the characters depth and didn't just label the 'abuser' as a villain but made him a human struggling too.
At least that's how it seemed to me at first.
The bad: The main character was continuously rude, selfish, irresponsible, and had no empathy and forgiveness for anyone else. She got it from others but if you did wrong against her there were no second chances. By the end of the series I was rooting against her. At first I thought they were just portraying her as flawed like the rest but no. They never let on she should be anything but the 'hero'. It made me sad for the other characters who were really trying to be better or to change and she was unforgiving and didn't encourage them at all. Her boyfriend seemed horribly depressed and had no one good in his life and she couldn't care less but made everything about her. She claimed things were for her daughter's well-being but we're actually selfish and prideful actions on her part. I recommend not watching this .
