The Notebook (2004)

Simply excellent
30 August 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This was an incredibly beautiful, marvelous movie.

I just don't why it gets too much undeserved hate. It could easily considered as one of the best romantic films ever made, and personally I found it to be very inspiring from beginning to end.

While most modern movies usually don't inspire me to read the book in which many of them are based, "The Notebook" was good enough to awaken my interest for the source material, and I have to say that Nick Cassevetes did a great job capturing perfectly well the mood and essence of the original novel.

I found "The Notebook" to be an excellent film and I honestly wish there were more movies like this. Nowadays, almost every movie seems to be filled with an overload of CGI or some superhero/fantasy stuff (While I have to admit some fantasy and superhero films can be incredibly good, I 'm starting to become tired of the over-saturation of both genres)

Awesome
19 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The most amazing saga of fantasy films (I'm talking of course of the great "Lord of the Rings" trilogy directed by Peter Jackson) is back, and it is just awesome as ever. I was worried about the possibility of this movie to receive the same kind of backlash that the Star Wars prequels (To be honest, I like the Star Wars prequels, but most of the critics and internet reviewers seem to hate those movies) but fortunately this movie got the good reception that it deserved, having all the good elements from the original trilogy: An epic and inspiring story, likable characters, spectacular visual effects, a great production design which is above the most of the stuff done by Hollywood in the recent years, likable characters, a good balance of seriousness and comedy...There wasn't anything which I didn't like about this movie. I was a perfect prequel which actually leave me wanting to see more.

I just hope that the two next films from "The Hobbit" were just as good as the first one. This movie was excellent in every possible way!

Garbage
19 September 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Ugh! The Police Academy films are simply the worst thing I've seen in my life.

Of course, this movie sin't the exception, being another unnecessary addition to a lame franchise that was bad from the beginning. All the jokes from this movie were dumb, idiotic and unfunny and everything about this terrible movie was dire and unwatchable.

I have to say that while I'm not very much into 80's movies (An overrated decade for cinema, but no so much as the 70's) but this was pretty much the very bottom of the barrel. In many ways, this wasn't anything better than modern garbage as "Date Movie" or "Meet the Spartans". In many ways, I think that this could be even worse than those two movies.

Great film
19 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Sam Raimi never disappoints, and this movie isn't exception of that rule: This magical and highly enjoyable film has all the charm from the 1939 classic, being a great tribute to that movie from beginning to end.

While some viewers dislike the visual style used in this movie, I think it was fantastic. Probably not at the same level of masterpieces like Avatar, but it does has the colorful, almost dream-like beauty that made the 1939 one of the most beloved fantasy films ever made.

James Franco makes here a very funny and charming performance as the titular character, resulting in a film very entertaining to watch, despite the slight predictability of the plot (After all, being some sort of prequel of the 1939 classic, it is quite obvious how things are going to end)

My recommendation to the viewers who are going to watch this movie is to don't expect it to be like "Wicked" (A great musical, but the story is unrelated to the books and movies) Instead of that, expect a nice homage to the Judy Garland movie (Even when this isn't a musical)

Garbage
19 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
"Street Fighter" is a typical video-game: Dumb, boring and poorly made, with zero appeal to most viewers, even those who, unlike me, can enjoy a dumb action flick as long it is entertaining.

The sad thing that is "Street Fighter" is not only dumb, but also terribly boring as well. It has an idiotic plot, bad performances and many pathetic scenes that made one viewer wonder in what were the makers of this movie thinking. It also has Jean-Claude Van Damme (one of the worst actors from the entire cinema history) as the main star, and that is enough reason to stay far way from this terrible movie.

The "Street Fighter" movie is just as bad as the "Resident Evil" movies.

A good film
16 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I think this is a pretty decent flick for the whole family, probably not at the same level of masterpieces like "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins", but at least it was much better than most of the so-called family films that Hollywood keeps producing in the recent years.

For me, what made this movie work were the funny performances of each actor, particularly Colin Firth and Emma Thompson, who made this film a very enjoyable experience despite the silliness of some scenes.

Honestly, this turned out to be much better than I was expecting, and some scenes (like for example, the beautiful ending scene) remind me the times when innocent films for the whole family were produced, unlike the commercial and inappropriate kid's movies and television shows of the recent years.

Great film
16 March 2013
Warning: Spoilers
I don't see why this gets so much hate: Personally I think that this was such a great film, and Keira Knightley was outstanding here, doing one of the most brilliant and fascinating performances of her entire career.

While the haters dislike this movie for not being exactly like the book, I found this version of "Anna Karenina" to be something fresh and original, which despite taking several liberties with the plot, captures the main essence of the novel written by Tolstoy.

This could have been just another adaptation, well done and well acted, but without originality or memorable qualities. Fortunately the great direction of Joe Wright made this a memorable and fascinating experience, which shows under a new light the characters and themes of the original story.

And personally, I think that here the "play-format"(Several scenes seem to take place on a theater stage) worked better than in "Dogville".

Warning: Spoilers
I found this movie to be a complete garbage, like most of the movies starring (or directed) by Mel Gibson. (I think that "The Passion of the Christ" might be one of the very few notorious exceptions)

This movie is pathetic and boring. It lacked an interesting, likable characters or any kind of redeeming value. There simply wasn't anything good about this atrocious film.

It was a terrible film, and it was the worst Ron Howard movie, along with his "Da Vinci Code" film (A terrible adaptation of an equally terrible book) and the dreadful "Angels & Demons".

If you want to see a good movie directed by Ron Howard see "Cinderella Man" or "Apollo 13" and skip this nonsense.

The best cartoon ever made
19 September 2012
Too be completely honest, I don't like very much cartoons, and I don't understand why some of them are so popular (Like the annoying and overrated series called "Family Guy") However, I do like "The Simpsons", and I think that it is one of the best television shows ever made, having lots of different characters (I Think that Homer is quite annoying, but the other characters are very interesting and funny, specially Lisa Simpson, Maggie, Marge and Ned Flanders) many funny situations and lot of good celebrities occasionally appearing in the series, making it more entertaining.

The jokes are fun, and the cultural references are very clever and well done. This is a very enjoyable series, with something to offer to everyone, and I think that's the main reason why "The Simpsons" could be easily considered the best cartoon ever made.

Alfonso Cuaron best film
14 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This was such a beautiful film. It is one of the best kids movies ever made, and it is also the best movie directed by Alfonso Cuaron, a very good movie director (Despite the fact that sometimes he made bad movies such as "Y tu Mama También") This version was a much better adaptation than the 1939 (Which is a very good film, but honestly I think this was a better adaptation of the book) This film had the heart in the right place, and captures perfectly all the emotion and beauty from the book. It has an excellent visual style, the music and the performances were quite good too.

I loved this movie. I wish there were more kid's films like this. I highly recommend it to anyone.

Bad movie
14 February 2012
Very bad movie, with lots of dumb and unfunny humor.

The main problem of this movie is that it tries to be a parody of the common archetypes from several fantasy flicks (Such as Star Wars, Clash of the Titans and the Lord of the Rings") but instead of being a good parody of those archetypes (like The Princess Bride or Stardust) it is a dumb comedy filled with many tasteless jokes that aren't fun at all.

Actually, it feels more like a frat comedy (Such as the terrible film "The Hangover") disguised as a fantasy film. That's why this movie doesn't work at all. The bad jokes from frat comedies aren't funny at all and are very stupid.

If you want to see a goo fantasy film with lots of comedy, then see movies such as "The Princess Bride" and "Stardust" and avoid this one.

Great adventure/romance flick
14 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
"The Princess Bride" is such a great film. There were many fantasy flicks on the eighties (And some of them were incredibly good, as "The Neverending Story") but this has to be best of them.

It was incredibly enjoyable and funny to watch, basically, it is a parody of the classic fairy tales, but it is not a dumb and shallow spoof like horrible movies such as "Dance Flick" or "Meet the Spartans", instead of that it makes fun of several of the clichés that appear in many fairy tales. And, at the same time, it has lots of adventure, and heartwarming moments, specially the ending.

It also has a beautiful love story...Not many parody films have that.

"The Princess Bride" is a great film for the whole family. It has fun, excitement and lots of heart. It is definitely one of the best movies ever made.

Warning: Spoilers
First of all, I have to say that I consider Andrea Boccelli to be one of the best singers in the world, so, I was expecting this to be incredibly good, but it turned out to be even better than I was expecting.

Andrea Boccelli has a unique, heavenly voice, and all his songs are beautiful. Even when I'm not very much into opera, I appreciate the incredible beauty and emotion that Boccelli puts in every single one of his songs, specially in this concert.

I think that this concert will be the perfect opportunity to introduce Andrea Boccelli to anyone who never heard about him or any of his wonderful songs. It is a wonderful experience, and I highly recommend it to everyone

Impressive film
8 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This is a great movie. I was expecting to hate it, since from trailers I could see that this movie was clearly influenced by anime and video games (Two things that I hate with passion) so I was really impressed to see that it was actually a very good film, with lots of clever and intelligent jokes.

The characters from this film were very likable and interesting...Personally I think that Michael Cera acting was magnificent and perfect for the character he was playing. The visual aspect from this movie was very good too, all the action scenes were incredibly well made and were funny to watch at the same time.

The love story between Scott and Ramona was the best element from this movie, and it was the main reason of why this fantasy flick was so enjoyable. This was a very good combination of romance, action, fantasy and comedy. It was one of the most enjoyable films that I've seen, and even when I'strongly dislike anime and video games, I really liked this movie and I recommend it t anyone.

Great addition to the spectacular Twilight franchise
8 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was beautiful and moving. It was an excellent addition to the spectacular Twilight franchise.

I had all the good element from the previous Twilight films, and it seems like the beginning for a epic, dramatic conclusion of the Twilight saga, which is one of the best franchises in the history of modern cinema. No, I'm not kidding, or being sarcastic: Just like many terrible action flicks are way over-hyped, the "Twilight" films are underrated and under-appreciated. (And personally I think that the books were underrated too, specially on the Internet)

This was one of the best romantic films ever made, and it was one of the best films that I've seen in the recent years. I cannot wait to see the sequel. This movie was just magnificent.

By the way: I am the only one who noticed the little "Avatar" homage made at the end of the movie (Notice the close-up at the eyes of Bella in the last frame of the movie and compare it with the ending of Avatar) Anyway, it was a nice reference.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" was a well directed and enjoyable film. Honestly, I don't see why it receive so much hate and bad reviews.

The best animated film of the recent years.
8 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
I have to confess that I don't like very much animated films, and I also never read a Tintin comic in my life.

I also I am not a big fan of Steven Spielberg. I don't hate his movies, is just that I think his works are somewhat overrated. (Well, he made a couple of good movies, such as "Jurassic Park", "Schindler List" and "The Color Purple", but I am not a fan of him)

However, this "Tintin" CGI animated movie was very good, being very funny to watch from beginning to end. Since I never read the comics, I can't compare the movie with them, with as a movie independent of the comics, it is very good and enjoyable. The CGI IS very well made, many sequences very impressive to watch. It was also much better than many of the recent animated films from the last years.

This was a very good film, and it is the best movie that Spielberg have done since "Schindler List".

Horrible
8 February 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is way too horrible.

I didn't like anything about it. The plot is completely vile and disgusting that I don't even know why this movie was made on first place.

This is not even a horror movie, is just plain disgusting and sick. It is not enjoyable, it is not interesting and it is definitely not good at all.

Avoid this movie. It's so incredibly disgusting and vile that I feel sick only thinking about any of the scenes from this movie.

"A Serbian Film" is one of the worst things I've ever watched. This is probably the worst movie ever made. There is nothing good about it.

Great Western
1 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Particularly, I found sad that a great western like "Dances with Wolves" is mostly forgotten in the recent years, being only remembered when some people on Internet make a bad joke about how "Avatar" from James Cameron "ripped -off" this film. That kind of comments made me think that the people that keep saying things like that doesn't even saw this excellent film in first place: Only the premise of this movie has some vague similarities with "Avatar": The characters, story, development and setting are completely different. And both are very good.

While "Avatar" focus more in action and in the incredible visuals, "Dances with Wolves" is more slow-paced and meditative, being more focused in the drama and the relationship between the characters, without being boring.

The characters are quite different too:John Dunbar (Here wonderfully played by Kevin Costner, a great and underrated actor) has almost anything in common with the hero of "Avatar", Jake Sully. And don't get me started in the rest of the cast:Most of them are not even remotely similar.

Sure, the premise of a military man who eventually became part of a tribal culture is the only thing that both movies have in common, but besides that, there is almost none similarity.

Anyway both "Avatar" and "Dances with Wolves" are both good movies, but very different between each other. The absurd comparisons that are constantly made reveal the fact that most of the viewers have forgotten almost everything about this great movie, remembering only the basic premise of it. Which is a shame, because this is an excellent film, with a great story and many beautiful scenes.

The best Harry Potter film
1 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
All those Harry Potter movies were okay. The books were funny enough, and all the movie adaptations were decent and satisfying. I'm not a big fan of those book, but I liked them. Daniel Radcliffe was a very good choice as Harry Potter, he is very handsome and talented. The performances, the script and the special effects were good enough, not as good as better films as "Avatar" and "Watchmen", but were good. My only problem with all the Harry Potter films is that all of those movies are pretty long. Since those book and movies are aimed to children they should be shorter, I guess. All the Harry Potter films are good, but this was easily the best of all the Harry Potter movies in the franchise, being the most entertaining and satisfying. I really liked the last scene.

The second part of "Deathly Hallows" was a great ending for the Harry Potter Saga, and it made me appreciate even more the story and the characters.

Powerful drama
1 September 2011
This was such a great film. Unlike many other boring "oscar-bait" films, this actually deserved all the praise it received.

This film was made by Sam Mendes, the same director of the overrated "American Beauty" (But he also made two good films, such as "Road to Perdition" and "Away We Go") I must admit that when I heard about this film for the first time, I wasn't very interested about it, because I thought it was going to be like "American Beauty", but in the Fifties, but this movie turned out to be pretty good, with many powerful and emotional scenes.

The performances were excellent, and the cinematography was equally good too.

Personally, I think that "Revolutionary Road" was an excellent film, and I found this to be superior in every single aspect to American Beauty. This is a good, underrated film that deserves more recognition.

One of the worst films ever made
1 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This was a pathetic film. the action was lame, and the direction was boring and mediocre at best. The performances were incredibly bad, specially the one given by Mel Gibson, an actor which I personally found to be incredibly overrated.

This is possibly one one of the most boring and worthless "historical" films ever made, where the only "epic" thing about this movie is how bad it is.

It is not surprising that it was directed by Roland Emmerich, a talentless hack who also made boring and dumb "disaster" flick as 2012, Independence Day and the atrocious remake of Godzilla.

"The Patriot" is a terrible film with no redeeming value.

A decent film inspired in a horrible film
1 September 2011
Warning: Spoilers
No matter how much I try, I never was able to understood what's so great about the "Rambo" flicks. I always hated those stupid and overrated films, and personally I think that "First Blood" was one of the worst movies ever made.

Maybe for that reason I wasn't able to enjoy so much this film...I guess if you feel nostalgic about the 80's (One of my least favorite decades...) you will enjoy more this film. I mean, this is a decent dramedy, with some good scenes and great performances, but is nothing particularly memorable or outstanding.

The story is merely entertaining, but that's it. Anyway, if you feel nostalgic about the 80's, probably you will enjoy this film more.

Another great documentary by Godfrey Reggio
4 August 2011
Personally, I think that the 3 movies that are part of the Qatsi trilogy are also some of the most beautiful, poignant and original documentaries ever made.

This marvelous trilogy show the viewers about the beauty of the world, nature and people, but it also is able to show what kind of chaos and tragedies could be generated in the modern society, and also makes the viewer think about the relationship of mankind with technology. And the most incredible part of it, is that it doesn't need words or pretentious speeches to do that: Only with images and music, Godfrey Reggio is able to communicate us an important message about the role that humans play on the planet Earth.

On the visual level "Powaqqatsi" is equally impressive as "Koyaanisqatsi", having some of the most memorable and beautiful scenes in the history of cinema. It follows the same wonderful style of that previous film, and it also prepares us for the chaos present in Naqoyqatsi.

Each film of the trilogy is unique, wonderful and outstanding, and personally I think that the Qatsi trilogy is one of the highest achievements in the history of cinema.

Very impressive documentary
14 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
This poignant and magnificent documentary is one of the most fascinating and beautiful film ever made: Unlike many documentaries that came before this, "Koyaanisqatsi" doesn't use any kind of dialogue or narration to express the point of view of the director: Instead of that, we are only show several scenes from nature and every day life, with the excellent music of Phillip Glass as backdrop for all the beauty, horror and strangeness presented in this movie.

At first, I thought this movie was somewhat tedious and weird, but now I could appreciate more the unique, fascinating nature of this movie, where no words are needed to express how great, and yet, how terrible is the reality of this planet. Also, unlike the narcissistic trash made by Terence Malick this movie has a real point (And also, It is not endless and tedious as the movies made by Malick) "Koyaanisqatsi" is a great documentary, and it was the beginning of an incredible trilogy.
