Shrek 2 (2004)
One sequel that doesn't bite!
I went to see this movie with 3 of my closest companions - My boyfriend, brother and sister. I was expecting a half-witted sequel playing on all the same jokes as the first... Boy was I wrong! This movie, just like it's predicessor, was original and *full* of wit! In fact, I would go so far as to say it was better. The first movie, was funny - no doubt. It was hilarious, but overall it lacked the emotional draw that the second had. This movie was just outstanding. Funny beyond compare - although I'm surprised this got away with only a PG rating, considering some of the more adult oriented jokes (Not that I mind!) If I had to recommend 1 movie this summer, Shrek 2 would be it. If you enjoyed the first one, you'll *love* this one! Go see it, Now! You won't regret it
The Passion of the Christ (2004)
Moving to those who understand...
I went to see this movie with my boyfriend. He and I are both saved Christians and thought this would be a wonderful experience. It was both wonderful and terrible. I'm sure I'm not the only one who will say that I had to bring a box of tissues and couldn't stop crying the whole way home.
My sorrow, however, was not from Jesus' death or from all the torture that he went through. That was painful to watch, don't get me wrong. But throughout the movie I could not stop thinking 'This was all for me. For the human race. For what we've done - he's perfect and doesn't deserve this'.
Many people don't understand why the violence is necessary or what good it is to show the gore. What these people need to understand is this: Jesus, throughout his entire life, had fellowship with God like no other. Being God's only son, he knew that the Lord was always there no matter what. But at this time, when all hope seemed lost and he needed him most, Jesus knew God had turned away from him. In this darkest hour he truly was alone. This was the true suffering. The love and comfort that he had always had, now was taken away. And for what? So that we - the people he so love - would not have to endure it.
A lot of this movie took some time to work through. The hidden meanings. All throughout we see Satan, in his/her beautiful, enticing form, sort of showing Jesus 'With me, this pain isn't necessary. Let them pay, it's not your problem.' This is where Jesus shows his strength.
He was born a human, from a human mother into a human world. His only difference was his perfection. He had the same temptations we all do and this movie shows that when he's praying in the garden. He wants so very much to say 'I don't want to do this' but he knows it's not his choice. In all his humanity, he still endured torture, humiliation, persecution, and lies.
In the end, he was forsaken. But through all of this, he loved man enough to keep on going. Now, to anyone who isn't saved, God may sound downright evil to forsake his son and let him bear the hate of the world all by himself. The fact of the matter is, God knew that *only* Jesus could bear such a burden. He trusted him and as always, gives no man more than what he can handle. God loved all of us - us sinners and non-believers - to let his son be tortured to death. You say 'Many Romans died this way' Well, not all of these people died bearing the burden of an eternity of sin. Jesus suffering was the greatest.
This movie made a change in me. I understand now just how much love there really is in God. I'm not saying Mel Gibson made me wanna run to church and get re-baptised - but I comprehend just how much suffering there was. And to not want to drop to your knees to thank Jesus, after seeing this, really makes you wonder how you would ever get through your darkest hour.
Fruits Basket (2001)
So sweet, kinda cliche
This anime is terribly cute. Although, as I've said many times, it's sort of a 'girls anime'. Honda Toru, sweet girl that she is, is without parents. In order not to burden her grandfather with another mouth to feed and back to clothe, she decides to live on her own in the woods. By the end of the first episode, she's living in a house full of men; men with a strange secret, that is. Throughout each episode, she learns more and more about the family she's now living with. Needless to say, there are a few problems with the underage Toru living in a mansion with 3 boys. Her best friends, Uotani and Hanajima, are there to protect and help their precious friend through her troubles. Toru, in her special way, is able to help the Souma's (the family she is staying with) through their problems. It's such a warm series, one that is sweet enough to gag a person. The only problem is the long, endearing talks she has with various people about their problems. They can get a little boring every now and then. But, really, this anime is quite adorable. After running it by a few of my male friends and family members (or rather forcing it upon them) I've come to the conclusion that it's definitely a show more for girls, but that doesn't mean you can't give it a try, lads. It's fun to watch and in many ways, it makes you think. I suggest this anime for just about anyone - it's funny, suspenseful, and it makes you warm and fuzzy inside ^_^
Gravitation (1999)
A fantastic anime - romantic, funny, dramatic, exciting!
Gravitation is one of my all-time favorite animes. It's got a great story line and some of the most unique characters I've ever encountered. The star, Shindou Shuichi and his best friend Nakano Hiroshi are a struggling Japanese Rock band. An already unsure Shuichi has even bigger doubts about himself and his career after an encounter with the mysterious Yuki Eiri. This anime is exciting and hilarious! So many twists and turns throughout the series keep you guessing at just how our pink haired star will overcome his newest obstacle. This anime may seem a little... different. Mainly due to it's yaoi (male/male) natures, but don't let that urk you. This anime is really fantastic. Only 13 episodes (and two OVA) it's short, but it really makes up for it. If I were grading, I'd give this show an A+, no doubt, for great animation, great charcaters, and all in all a great story.
