Warrior (2011)
Film of the year so far!
I've never been one for fighting films. i used to think once you'd seen one, nothing else under this genre could surprise or impress me. this did both and so much more. It tells the story of Brendan Conlon (Joel Edgerton) a physics teacher who needs money or him and his family will be evicted from their home. Therefore he is luckily entered into an intense ufc tournament. meanwhile his troubled brother tommy conlon ( Tom Hardy) is also training for the same tournament with his hated father (Nick nolte)who is constantly trying to get both boys forgiveness. Both boys fight out in the championship. one for money, and one for honour. Apart from the outstanding fighting sequences this films emotional core is what drives it. It is extremely corny throughout but it doesn't matter because you care so much for he characters and what happens to them. Tom Hardy proves he is one of the best actors working today whilst Joel Edgerton also delivers a solid performance, however Nick Nolte gives the performance of the film with his tragic desperate performance of the always failing father. Expect an Oscar nod. To top off the film is incredibly ended. A must see whether you like fighting films or not. Truly special
Inception (2010)
Best Film of the year!
Chris Nolan has reached new heights. After Memento and the Dark knight I didn't think he could ever top is genius scripts and amazing effects... but he has. He immediately makes the audience accept this world of dream thieves. Leonardo Dicaprio plays Dom Cobb a man capable of entering peoples minds through their dreams and stealing ideas. With the help of his friend Arthur (Joseph Gordon Levitt) and an equally talented team he is asked to plant an idea into a young mans mind hence inception. This film displays possibly the most extraordinary and realistic effects I've ever seen in film. You leave the film trying to remember all the classic scenes, the best of which being Levitt fighting in a room with no gravity, genius! Leo and Ellen Page are as reliable as ever, Tom Hardy bring a great sense of humour whilst the overlooked cillian Murphy brings a great sense of emotion, however it is Joseph Gordon Levitt who excels as the completely serious, cool right hand man. Next to Hardy he is one of the most exiting newcomers at the moment. To sum up, perfect direction, great acting and a mind blowing script. This is likely to be over looked at the Oscars but this is a MUST-SEE and not a film i will be forgetting soon.
