Only Fools and Horses: Strained Relations (1985)
"Have you seen my hat it was here".......
An absolutely amazing episode from the fourth series of "Only Fools And horses" really show's John Sullivans writing at it's finest , all the regulars are a on good form too.
It's a cold snowy winter's morning in Peckham and it's the morning of Grandads funeral following the funeral Del and Rodney gather around their grandfathers grave , throwing in what they think is his trademark trilby ( Or so they thought ). After that it's all back to the flat for a wake where Rodney becomes extremely upset at how easy Del seemingly finds getting over Grandads death. At the wake they encounter Grandad's long lost bother Albert a very unsuccessful sailor. Later that evening everybody has gone home or so they thought until they encounter Uncle Albert who had "Conked out on one of them beds" , as it is too late they decide to let Albert stay the night and drive him back to North London in the morning. The next morning, Albert follows Del back to the flat to tell him and Rodney that Stan and Jean moved again because they have a mobile home. Del decides that Albert should go to the Seaman's Mission. As Albert goes off to the kitchen to have a cup of tea, Rodney has a go at Del for getting over Grandads death so easily, Del snaps back at him by saying he doesn't know how to grieve and all his life he's always played the though man and now he doesn't know how to be anybody else and they say's " Bloody family! I've finished with them! What do they do to you, eh? They hold you back, drag you down, and then they break your bloody heart!", which really makes Rodney truly understand what Del's going through. The next day at the Nags Head they see Albert again claiming the seaman's mission has closed down so Del finally gives in and lets him stay and the rest is History..........
This episode really is perfect from start to finish never has a piece of television had me laughing and crying so much at the same time. John Sullivan's writing is absolutely beautiful in this episode also the acting from David Jason and Nicolas Lyndhurst is of a very high standard. A perfect way to say goodbye to the very dear character of Grandad and welcome Uncle Albert.
Best bit - Del Boy: Get over it?! What a plonker you really are Rodney. Get over it. I ain't even started yet!!! Ain't even started bruv! And do you know why? Because I don't know how to!!! That's why I've survived all my life with a smile and a prayer! I'm Del Boy ain't I! Good old Del Boy - he's got more bounce than Zebedee! "Here you are pal, what you drinking? Go on! Hello darling, you have one for luck!!" That's me, that's Del Boy innit? Nothing ever upsets Del Boy. I've always played the tough guy! I didn't want to, but I had to and I've played it for so long now, I don't know how to be anything else! I don't even know how to... Oh it don't matter! Bloody family! I've finished with them! What do they do to you, eh? They hold you back, drag you down, (on the verge of tears) and then they break your bloody heart! Rodney: (whispers) I'm sorry.
Such a powerful scene beautifully acted by the two actors.
Only Fools and Horses: Diamonds Are for Heather (1982)
"You got any Uncle Ben's ?".........
A few week's after the end of the sublime and in my opinion the best series of "Fools" came the show's second Christmas special "Diamonds are for Heather" the title of course being a parody of the James Bond film "Diamonds are forever"
Del is drowning his sorrows at the Nags heads Spanish evening after the bird he was seeing ( "No know her with the nose") has given him the old heave-ho. Not even a good old sing song can lift his mood. After treating all the regulars to a Spanish version of "Old Shep" the evening look's like it's over , that's until he catches a glimpse of Heater out the corner of his eye. Del entertains her and being the true gentleman he is makes sure she gets safely back to her flat. He discovers that her husband is away down the job centre but he left 18 months ago. Romance soon blossoms between the two and Del becomes like a dad to her little boy Darren. Del decides it's the right time to pop the question to Heather but she has other ideas as her husband has got back in touch and leaves Del broken hearted.
This episode is considered by many as the worse episode of "Fools" i don't share this opinion and absolutely love this episode. It's nice to see a different side of Del for the first time very clever writing here by John Sullivan some real laughs and tears. The ending of the episode is particularly poignant brilliant performance by David Jason he really shines in this episode.
Best bit - The ending so moving no dialogue just David Jason's wonderful acting when he pay's the Carol singers to play "Old Shep" and drives away alone.
Only Fools and Horses: A Touch of Glass (1982)
"Now brace yourself Rodney......Brace yourself"
This episode is the end of the sublime second series , in my opinion the best series of "fools" and this episode is one of the most remembered of the entire run due to the infamous chandelier scene.
On the way back from a auction the trotters encounter a women who has broken down so they stop to offer their assistance. It turns out that this is no ordinary women it's Lady Ridgemere of Ridgemere Hall. Without any hesitation the Trotters tows Lady Ridgemere back home safely and invite them self's inside. Del overhears the lord on the phone and he is having trouble with his chandelier and Del suddenly see's this as an opportunity to earn a few quid. Armed with the high tech equipment( window lean and super-glue) they undertake the job of taking down two priceless chandelier's what could possibly go wrong ? .......
This episode is an absolute classic this was in fact based on a true story told to John Sullivan by his father. This was notable for being the first episode of "Fools" to attract an audience of over 10 million and it's not hard to see why. At the time the show attracted very little audience figures which is hard to understand cause in my opinion this was "Fools" at it's best during it's second series.
Best bit - Obviously the chandelier scene
Red Dwarf: The End (1988)
The Beginning
The first ever episode of the BBC's Sci-Fi sitcom witch in my personal opinion is the best show ever made.
The episode introduces the main characters and sets up the story backbone of the series. On the mining ship Red Dwarf, Dave Lister is placed in stasis for refusing to give up the whereabouts of his forbidden pet cat. When he emerges from stasis, three million years later, he discovers that everybody has died from a radiation leak.He is not alone though his former buck mate and superior Arnold Rimmer has been resurrected as a hologram by the ship's computer Holly to keep lister sane. Also the cat who has evolved from lister's pet cat This was first broadcast on the 15 Febuary 1988 and gained an audience of over 5.1 million viewers from its first showing, which was respectable for a post watershed BBC2 programme. This is episode is by far the best episode from the first series of Red Dwarf. At this stage it was still just a sitcom set in space it wasn't till the third series it really became a sci-fi show. The Early years of red dwarf sometimes get a negative response from fan's because of the limited scope of the storeys but i think it is very unfair the reception they get.
Last of the Summer Wine: How Not to Cry at Weddings (2010)
Goodbye
Here it is the very last of the summer wine after 31 series and 295 episodes the series has finally ended. This episode was a average episode nothing special but very amusing in places.
Everybody is getting ready for the wedding prompting Howard and Pearl to look back at their relationship and finally get back together.Alvin begins flirting with Stella and Toby is determined to win back his wife Monica and clegg has forgotten to lock his door. They all meet up at a local pub where Glenda gets a phone call to say the groom has do a runner so they all decide to head off to a nice lunch.
The final episode was very good but the show did not get the send off it deserved. It was for clegg to have the very last line and was fitting since he is the only person to appear in all 295 episodes.I would like to say a huge thank-you to all involved in the making of this wonderful show.
