Dune (2021)
Best movie i have seen in a long time
I had not read the books before I watched the movie so didn't know what to expect.
Was blown away by the visuals and sound and the Dune universe.
Cant wait for the next installment, i have now read the book and currently reading Dune: Messiah. I think the movie did stay true to the book for the most part, some of the dialogue was word for word, but they couldn't fit every detail in.
Would recommend you read the books if haven't already to fill in the gaps/background on some characters/races. Will be very interesting how they approach the next 2 movies, i will certainly be looking forward to them.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Great Sequel
I was a big fan of the original seeing it as a teenager and didn't know what to expect with this 2nd installment, have to say it was really enjoyable.
Likeable cast and decent story catching up with Maverick 30 years later.
The action scenes in the first movie were awesome and with the camera tech we have now this movie moves that up another level.
The action sequences are absolutely amazing, this movie is a wild ride. I watched it in IMAX and 4Dx and both are highly recommended. So great to see effects that were not all CGI.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
Another massive Star Wars Fail
Was really looking forward to Obi Wan, but unfortunately after 3 episodes i don't really feel like watching anymore.
Really poor script, awful acting from several of the cast (or possibly best the actors can do with the script) and musical score is really awful.
Annoying characters, poor action scenes, i could go on but others have already said all that needs to be said.
Like the sequel movies they had the opportunity to do something really special and instead failed massively.
Child's Play (2019)
Dont mess with the Chuck!
So instead of being possessed by a sick serial killer this doll has its safety settings disabled by a disgruntled factory worker to allow him to do bad things. Of course if security settings were the only thing stopping the doll becoming a killer every doll made would have been hacked and this flaw discovered very quickly. Absolutely awful lazy writing. A doll being possessed by a serial killer due to a magical spell is 1000 times more believable!
Didn't have a problem with the actors but the movie itself was boring, unfunny and unoriginal. Why not just come up with a new original story instead of rehashing the same thing. For example the creepy apartment repair guy spying on everyone how unoriginal, the nasty moms bf who the kid hates, death scenes were also really unimaginative. And even modern technology being used to kill eg drones etc been done so many times now as well! Absolute rubbish which is unfortunately becoming the norm for Hollywood these days.
Hunter Killer (2018)
Really enjoyed this action packed thriller
Been a long time coming for a submarine as a big fan of crimson tide, this did not disappoint.
Was action packed from the start, decent acting performances, good special effects and suspense throughout. Also good story, really enjoyed this movie.
Nice refresh from the endless sniper, iraq type war movies being churned out in the last 10 years.
Prisoner (1979)
Way ahead of its time
Forget the awful set, cheap production, this show had great writing & characters.
It also tackled hard issues no other show from its time did. All in all a great show with laughs, memorable characters and some shocking moments.
This is a real cult classic.
Orange Is the New Black (2013)
Unrealistic and uninteresting
Watched half the first season...
Its a prison full of lesbians and a transgender character but no smokers, drug addicts, murders, assaults, gangs etc,,, of course the crooked white male sex abuser guards are there, and typical stereotypical prisoners.
I am sure this is far from true to life of any woman's prison in the US.
Apart from that, characters are annoying & boring, stories are lame, what a mess. I prefer prisoner: cell block H from the 80's to be honest (anyone remember the freak?)...
Death Wish (2018)
Average revenge flick
Nothing special about this movie, story has been done before.
Decent performance by Bruce Willis but too many things annoyed me & totally unbelievable story to give it any more than 5 stars.
Basically his daughter got her mother killed by slashing a burglar in the face when she could have just sat there, why would you do that? even at the end when she is told to stay put doesn't what she is told, she definitely deserved to die instead of her mother! Was very annoying.
Passed in 2 hours and wasn't so bad I would turn it off but anyone giving this movie over 8/10 has a very low standard imho. Not be a movie I will ever watch again.
Westworld (2016)
Up and Down
Was bored most of the first season, until the last 3 episodes which perked my interest.. 1st episode of 2nd season was decent, but onto the second and it seems to have got really really slow & boring again. I am very much into sci-fi and a huge fan of science but don't think the questions this show asks are as mind blowing or "deep" as some reviewers are making it out to be.
Hopefully next one will get better but so-far not sure if it will keep my interest to the end of this season.
Billions (2016)
Starting to loose its way.
Really enjoyed s1 & s2 but now into ep6 s3 and it is all starting to get silly. House of Cards Dexter, Homeland come to mind, unfortunate that some US series seem to go this way.
Hopefully I can come back at a later date and give it a better score as would give s01 & 02 8 stars.
Cobra Kai (2018)
Better than I ever expected - wipes away the stain of Karate Kid remake
Was a big fan of the original movie (like most kids growing up in the 80s). Didn't expect much going into this, but was pleasantly surprised. Good acting, great characters, humor, nostalgia (but not over the top) & decent story. Really good continuation of the Karate Kid movies and retained the components of what made the original so great, keeping it relevant for today's world.
Only criticism I have is Danielsons fat, rude, pointless slob of a kid that I couldn't see him let happen, considering the lessons he had growing up.
Apart from that bring on the next series... well done YouTube.
Corbin Nash (2018)
Promising world let down by bad storytelling
The world/characters where interesting at first but ultimately was let down by trying to tell the story in a much unneeded complicated way. Took most of the movie to get to the point that I knew it was going to get to. Think of blade but with no action and 1h 15mins to find out how he became blade when it would be much better with 30 minutes to explain that part and get on with the action.
I was really bored at some points and by the time something exciting did happen the movie was over. Acting was satisfactory but nothing to rave over. I am also still not clear if this is a movie about vampires or angels and demons.
Editing was awful and time skipping all over the place did the story no favours. There is no point trying to build up to something that is revealed at the start of the movie i found myself saying "get to the good part & enough of this ********;. If there is a sequel and those problems are addressed there may still be hope but agree with other reviews that as a stand alone movie this did not work.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
absolute nonsense & lazy writing.
Contains spoilers
Really thought about turning this movie off after 40 minutes. The prank phone call joke with hux is the worse acted/most unfunny thing that i have seen in all the star wars movies to date.
the milking of the cow, rubbish creatures, leia able to survive in space. chewie bit part where he becomes a veggie. absolute rubbish. SNOKE had awful cgi. (why didnt they just use actor with makeup? waste of a character.
onto the story now, full of plot holes, I was interested in finding out more about ray, kylo, snoke, finn after fa. i dont care about any of them now apart from finn. kylo ren is worse bad guy ever he is more like an angsty teenager than a supreme leader/sith. the whole spaceship will run out of fuel is an insult to any sci-fi fan and is idiotic. This movie treats the audience as if they are really dumb and don't understand what a vacuum is/physics of space. Writing each episode one at a time was a stupid thing to do, why not write the whole 3 movie script at once?
not surprised though as that is hollywood now, trying to please everyone instead of having a vision and making different movies that appeal to different demographics. only interested in profit/pc and forcing political agendas on the audience only ends up in a disjointed mess of a movie.
rogue one was a great movie, pity about the continuation of the main story, so many possibilities in the star wars universe and this is all they could come up with! disney will not be getting any more of my money for star wars ever again!
