I am revisiting this film as I am teaching The Three Musketeers to my 7th grade class. (an easy version). While this adaptation takes tons of liberties with the novel, it captures the gist of the story and is a great way to get kids interested in readin teh novel.
It's action, romance, secrets and double-crosses. The humor is great and when it goes serious and dark, it's right on the mark. You really feel for Athos and Milady. The scene where she dies is heartbreaking even after several viewings.
I grew up with the Richard Lester version, which is also great. But Charleton Heston's Richelieu is so dull, especially when compared to Tim Curry's scenery chewing performance.
I love Michael Wincott, so seeing him as the evil Rochefort is just perfect.
This might be the best film Chris O'Dowell has ever done, he's cute and charming as D'Artagnan.
