Nobody's Fool (1994)
No fools here
This Paul Newman movie contains more warmth and heart than most films out of Hollywood. Donald is a genuinely complicated character and Nobody's Fool is one of my all time favorite movies.
Our Girl (2013)
Series 2 - Mission Failure
Series 1 was deeply flawed by long scenes of 20-something angst. Series 2 continues that not-so-proud tradition and adds large dollops of repetitive plot and bad acting. I kept hoping it would change miraculously and be worth my time, but alas.
The Next Three Days (2010)
Top notch suspense
One of the best suspense movies I have EVER seen! Rent it. Buy it. Watch it now!
Bomb Girls (2012)
Uneven drama
I watched Season #1 Episodes #1-6 and liked the series. Then I watched Season #2 Episodes #1-12. I thought the second season was decidedly not up to the standard of its predecessor. Many subplots remain unresolved. Story lines and character roles were muddled. Certainly the overall patriotic theme is worthy and was told well. The U.S.A. owes much to its steady, loyal hardworking neighbors to the north. O Canada for sure!
Mr Selfridge (2013)
Reality, but not the one we wanted
A decidedly disappointing conclusion to a series that was one of my favorites. PBS seems to favor sad endings. In this case, an upbeat, albeit fictional, denouement to the 'history' of one of England's most successful entrepreneurs - arguably one of the world's most brilliant business minds - might have been more appropriate. I was prepared to rate it an "8" until the final episode.
Delicious (2013)
A tasteless movie
Bulimia is at best a tasteless subject. Certainly the disease is significant and should be properly recognized among qualified medical authorities. But an afternoon's entertainment, it ain't. I would, however, love to see more Finty Williams who deftly and with subtle understatement, plays the character the leading man should have chosen.
Das Boot (2018)
A story without a proper ending
Season 1 of this series enforced at the risk of death the insanity and cruelty of war. Well done in that regard, but even war deserves a proper burial. There were no last rites and burial to honor the headstone of Season 1. Doubt I will waste time watching Season 2 if there is one.
Where Hands Touch (2018)
Not so touching
I am rating this a 5 only because it contained some exceptional cinematography, otherwise I would have given it a 2. The story is mind-numbingly gruesome. Humans must never treat another human in this terrible fashion.
The Widow (2019)
A Bleak Black Widow for Amazon
VIOLENCE, PAIN and DEATH pervade this disgusting Amazon Prime Un-Original series. It consists predominantly of flashbacks/forwards. As if Amazon's writers could not imagine anything else during this pervasively unsettled political era. I made it through only five of the eight episodes before having to turn it OFF. Don't waste your time. In the end you'll thank me.
Wrong Turn at Tahoe (2009)
Wrong headed
Needless violence! A good cast wasted on tripe.
Violence on top of violence.
Misogynistic scenes of female degradation.
Hollywood is capable of so much better.
Goliath (2016)
Very uneven
Season 1 was good, not great, but there was hope.
Goliath showed its true character in Season 2 which was total worthless garbage.
Season 2 script, casting, acting, cinematography were all just garbage.
Surface to Air (1998)
Surface To Air
Not a classically great movie, but far from the worst I've ever seen. Similar to British heroic wartime movies of the 40s, but updated with lots of great scenes of jet combat, modern military aircraft, carrier-based troops and military procedures. Likely the procedures were not exactly as rendered, but told well enough to tell an entertaining story. The action is steady and I, who bore easily, was not bored. Worth an hour of your afternoon. - Ralph
One of Us (2016)
Retribution for watching
The cast isn't bad, but the writing is nothing but death, suicide and more death. Stopped watching about 20% of the way thru Episode 3 - could not stomach it any more. The opportunities for incredible cinematography are there. Scotland can be damp, but it's classically stunning. The Director, however, has chosen to make viewing as dreary as the excruciatingly slow-paced storyline. The Scottish National Chamber of Commerce failed you by not banning this movie. Take action yourself, and don't bother to watch.
