Annihilation (I) (2018)
7/10
Thought provoking
3 March 2018
I'm sure after reading a couple of user reviews you'll see that there is very little mid-ground on this movie. No gray, if you will. It seems you ether LOVE this movie or you undoubtedly HATE it. If I am being perfectly honest, I nether love nor hate this movie. I gave Annihilation a 7 out of 10; firstly, because the visuals of this film are phenomenal! Second to none, this movie takes you to another world. A world where everything is beautiful or terrifying! I'd have to say Annihilation was much scarier then I thought it would be so if you're not looking for scary stay clear. This movie is also extremely physiological so stay clear if you don't like movies messing with your head. I personally love thought provoking movies that's why I saw this. Natalie Portman and Oscar Issac are flawless in this film, convincing me that this is real and giving me a connection to their characters on an emotional level. However, where Portman and Issac are amazing I am truly let down by Jennifer Jason Leigh as her part seems uninteresting and useless to the plot but her acting is quiet, shy, and not convincing in any way. 7 out of 10, 2 of those lost stars belong to her and the poor script. The last fallen star belongs to some of the slowness of the film. There are 2 scenes that seem like they're lasting forever and nothing is happening. All in all, a pretty great ride with few complaints. I would not recommend this movie to anyone who is not physiologically sound as it tries hard to play with your mind. Also, there is some very disturbing images that make this film have the R rating.

Eagle Eye (2008)
8/10
Powerful
22 April 2016
Eagle Eye is a gut wrenching, heart pounding-thriller from beginning to end. Although stories like this one have been told before, this one really does tell it like no other giving us a perspective that hits home. Eagle Eye is about national security and what would happen if someone evil were to get inside and turn everything upside down on the people in charge of running the country. Now, I cannot say too much without giving the movie away so I'll keep it brief. Eagle Eye has outstanding action scenes and special effects! I believe it has something to offer for everyone. The writing is fair and the music is as well. The acting is believable from the entire cast and for once Shia Labeouf does a grand job of making us care for his characters safety and happiness. There is, however, a little more "language" then I believe necessary. To quote Nathan Wilson "language is necessary to an extent. If you're a cop and see a dead women you're not going to say 'oh darn, he got away again!'" with that being said, I rest my case. I said in the beginning of the review that this movie hits home and I'll tell you why; being a dad and a husband, I see now that I would do just about anything for the safety of my children. Just about. How far would you go to protect the ones you love? Would you kill or find a way out if there was one even though people could still die or get hurt in the end. Don't get me wrong, I love my family to death but this movie pushes the line of how far one can or could go to save them; to the point that makes all other people and priorities irrelevant including the safety of one countries future. We can't always protect our children from all bad things that happen in this fallen world, the best we can do is be there for them if they do get hurt and pick them back up. Eagle Eye stresses that point. I think we should too.

Dark Knight meets more violence and more action
22 April 2016
One thing is for sure here, there truly is a point where there is such a thing as TOO MUCH ACTION! Don't get me wrong, I thought this movie was awesome and I believe anyone who loves a good action flick and a dark story-line would enjoy this film BUT let's face it, this is over a 2 hour long movie and had over an hour of none-stop action. I got a head ache. It was real. As far as dark goes, this is one of the darkest super hero films to hit cinemas yet! Batman literally wants to end superman's life. This is the first batman movie to show batman trying to kill people not just hurt them. I highly recommend that no children under the age of 15 watch this dark flick. I think there is a serious problem in this country with people taking their little kids to PG-13 movies and it needs to stop. This movie pushed the lines of violence and sexual content far beyond most PG-13 movies. One thing that bugged me with this film was how much violence there really was. It showed everything. The camera never looked away. Also, Wonder women's legs and bare back and almost bare chest got a lot more screen time than they deserved. Outside of those two big things, this movie was perfect! The story line kicked butt (as did Batman) and the acting was surprisingly good. I put this movie on the same level with the Dark Knight Trilogy and Man of Steal.

What would you do.
26 September 2015
It's funny how much smack this movie got because, frankly, Seeking a friend for the end of the world has a lot of very compelling and thought provoking questions plus being a very fun movie. For instance, what "would you" do if we all knew the world was ending for sure? If there was NO WAY for escape and we were all doomed, how would YOU spend your last weeks, days, hours etc. ? What would you do. It's a tough question if you really think about it. Kind of question you'd ask someoneon a blind date. But for poor Dodge (Played by the famous and fantastic Steve Carell) spending his last days was a question he'd rather just not answer. As we follow Dodge in his boring last days, fate would have it, that he runs into fun, spunky, out going, dangerous and a little bi-polar, Penny. Penny sells the movie. She makes it interesting and worth seeing. She adds something to the movie we were half heartingly expecting but didn't realize she was truly a loving and caring person who complements most people. Keira Knightley (Penny) makes this movie believable. Although the director, Lorene Scafaria, is known for practically nothing, she pulls off a grand show with lots of heart and plenty of fun. So what would you do? Find something new or stay the way everyone knows you. Would you be comfortable or go outside your comfort zone for the first and last time ever? 7 out of 10 on this funny piece of work. Worth a watch on the weekend. Recommend to adults not teens or kids.

Mud (2012)
8/10
Would have been a 10 if...
22 May 2014
Mud, is an excellent film. -Has a great, almost perfect, script. (I say almost perfect because too much swearing in a film makes it bland) -Has some amazing acting. Lots of talent. -Really great music score that matches up with the film nicely. HOWEVER, unnecessary elements can sometimes bring a great movie down to a horrible one. One thing you need to know about Mud is that it is a truly believable story line. It is a very believable movie! Like, by the end, you think to yourself "wow...that could have really happened." But, there are some things in this movie that I disagree on. One, it is incredibly unnecessary to have young teenage boys gawking over a porn magazine. That doesn't have to be in ANY movie much less one like this; that has this good of a story. (There's also a scene where a young guy starts staring down a woman's shirt and she snaps her fingers to make him look away but he won't. Just something that doesn't need to be there.) Two, just because some disrespectful teenage guys talk about sex and girls in inappropriate ways does not mean they all do. It does not make the story more believable by adding that to it. I would have given this a 10 if...It didn't have those unnecessary elements. They DID NOT add anything to the movie. They only took away from it. This film is about love, courage, bravery, mystery, and life's warnings. It is one of the best inidie films I've ever seen. Was well worth the watch! But I would not recommend this film to everyone.

Stake Land (2010)
7/10
Noticing our faults
17 July 2013
Stake Land is a horror/vampire movie. It is gory. Disturbing. Frighteningly scary. But it tells us a message so deep that it should shake us to our core. Think about your life for a minute. Finished? Okay now think of all things we have. We have so many freedoms in this country! We don't have to live off the land. We have stores and super markets. We have electricity and running water in our homes. These are thing we normally wouldn't think about. Stake Land shows us what life is like without those things and why we should never take anything for granted. Life is precious and sometimes we must fight for it! Life is something worth protecting. Honor and bravery are things to strive for. Courage and strength are things that we are losing track of and we must regain them. Stake Land is just another scary vampire movie with good actors and a well developed plot. It is something original and scary. But there's something so unbelievably deep in this back drop that we must take into account! Don't waste your life on drugs, drinking, or dating. Pick yourself up and make a difference for someone. Help people and be an encouragement for others. Don't take life for granted. See the good in all things.

What should family mean
17 July 2013
And what should family mean? No family is "perfect." We have hard times that can change the coarse of life. Family is love. In it's own twisted way sometimes. Family Weekend shows us that we, as a family, can fall apart really fast and never notice. That we can say things to siblings that can be really hurtful and never give a second thought. The point is to all ways come back no matter what. Because no one is perfect but it's up to us to make a difference in ones life. Family Weekend shows us that sometimes we have to go the extra mile to prove that someone is wrong and that we ether have to "fix" it or "save" it no matter what the costs. We have to accept the card we've been dealt even if that means some screaming and mental pain for a couple days. Because we have to stick it out. Because if we don't...what would family really be? I highly suggest this movie for anyone who has had family problems or is going through them. It's an encouragement in it's own way.

I was surprised
17 July 2013
I was indeed surprised after seeing White House Down. I was surprised because this movie was pretty darn good. It was basically a "shoot em up" movie but it was still pretty decent. White House Down shows us that family, honor, government and bravery are things to be fought for. White House Down shows us freedom worth fighting for. The cast was good. The writing and script was all right. The cinematography and special effects were decent. This movie is worth your time weather you think it or not. There are, of course, some things that I do not agree with in this movie. For one, they make the president out to be a complete moron. Between the script and the lake of caricature development Jamie Foxx plays a man dressed in a suit pretending to be something more. The plot could have been better. However! In the end this movie is worth seeing. In America we take things for granted. A lot. And this movie shows us that we really shouldn't and that we are blessed to live in this God given country.

Grown Ups 2 (2013)
3/10
I was greatly disappointed.
14 July 2013
When I heard that a second Grown Ups movie was coming out I was immediately excited. Being a a huge fan of the first one; my expectations were very high for the second. Obviously too high. This film had basically no point or plot at all. It was incredibly disappointing. I barely laughed at all. All of the jokes and humor was unbelievably crass and perverted. The movie was just plan dirty. The first one had its moments but this one felt like a big "one of those moments." The dialog was disappointingly gross in the end. Giving this a 3 out of 10 still seems a little to high and mighty even for this. I wasted my money. Don't waste yours and don't see this lame excuse for a sequel.

Hick (2011)
6/10
A good but tough watch.
16 June 2013
Out of all the movies I've seen this far in life, this has been one of the toughest so far. The screenplay was amazing. The casting was perfect. The plot was entertaining. BUT; in the end of it all, it's really hard to watch a young 13 year old girl go through so much pain at just that young age. It's a tough watch because this young girl has an awful life and tries her hardest to get away from it all but on the way to get away she gets caught up in some real adult places and situations that are quite disturbing for such a young girl. Hick is a good film, that is, if you like indie/rebel movies. There's a lot of good things/qualities in this film but, again, it's tough to watch. So because of all that I gave this a 6 out of 10. Keep in mind, this is a very believable story so it may be hard for some people to watch. It is the worth the time to watch but bare in mind that it is rated R for a good reason.

Pitch Perfect (2012)
8/10
Best soundtrack ever!
28 April 2013
Pitch Perfect starts on an off note but ends on a high one that knocks it out of the park. Pitch Perfect shows us a lot of what singing groups in college are like. The soundtrack to this film is one of the best ever made. The writing is decent as is the acting. There are a few reasons I didn't give this film a 10; One of them being there are some people in this movie that are so annoying you just want to shoot yourself in the foot. Second, some of this movie is really crud and there's really no reason for it. In the end this is a great movie for the weekend and for those who love music/singing I highly suggest this film to you.

This movie isn't "just" another teenage movie.
27 April 2013
Although I do not agree with the world-view of this film it is one of the best films I have ever seen. This movie is very emotional because, if you were ever a teenager like I was, you relate to this movie in more ways than one. I suggest this movie to anyone who had a rather rough time in high school. Not everyone had awesome friends like Sam and Patrick but those of us who did will for sure love and most likely cry during this movie. This movie is about love, friendship, stress, high school, writing, drama and music! The script for this movie was close to flawless. The casting was Perfect as Emma Watson gave us a performance of a life time. A great feel good movie for those moving on from one part of life to the next. May the next be as rich as the last.
