Schramm (1993)
Possibly one of the best portraits of a serial killer to date
Schramm is the story of a serial killer that goes by the name of 'The Lipstick Killer'. The camera work and editing are completely amazing, and the story never gets old. Lothar Schramm is a man who is sexually deprived, and as far as I can tell, afraid of women. This isnt such a good thing for his next door neighbor, a prostitute. This movie is almost in the vein of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, but it is much more graphic and poetic then Henry could ever imagine. Now, I had read ALOT about this movie (as I am a big Jorg Buttgereit fan) so I knew what the movie was about, and how it was going to end, and blah blah blah. But when I actually bought a copy of it and sat down and watched it, I was completely blown away. It wasnt ANYTHING what I thought it was going to be, and I mean that in an extremely good way! If you want to see a beautifuly-Ugly film, with an amazing/twisted love story, Gorgeous camera-work, and an extremely dedicated director, Please rent this.
Zombie '90: Extreme Pestilence (1991)
Grade A Splatter Fun for the whole family!
I completely love this movie among other movies of Andreas Schnaas. Zombie '90 is about a plane which crash-lands and a chemical is disposed of, turning an entire community into blood-drinking, gut-munching, throat-slitting, organ-eating zombies! Really good FX for a SUPER low-budget shot-on-video film (with horrid VO's). Well, besides the fact that we are talking about a splatter flick, there is still one scene which I believe makes the film what it is, and why you will remember/rent it. 1. The exploding head of a zombie when shot! 2. A really awesome in-car shot with a zombie being decapitated with an axe!
Begotten (1989)
Slow and Boring "Eraserhead" pouser
This film is such boring psycho babble, I cant even begin to think. It is, what looks like to be, a peice of modern art, much in the vein of Eraserhead. What it actually is, is a peice of modern bogusness. The story (although the only way to actually realize this is by the end credits) is about god, mother earth, and the creation of the world/universe. The fast-forward button comes in handy with this film, as I got through about the first half hour, and then started to fast forward, hoping that it would get better, only to realize that it was all downhill from that point on. Maybe I just didnt 'get' it, but then again, maybe you have to be on Timothy Leary's invention to 'get' it? This film is almost as boring as Edmund Elias Merhige more popular movie, Shadow of the Vampire. A try at art-house, in which my eyes, did not succeed.
Der Todesking (1990)
Completely Beautiful Filmmaking
Der Todesking, the first film that I ever saw by the amazing director Jorg Buttereit, and what a profound film this is! It is a story all revolving around one topic: Suicide. A different story for every day of the week. All of the people receive a chain letter, which (to my knowledge) makes them kill themselves. The best episode is wednesday, because it is so simple, but yet completely beautiful and the dialoge is amazing. I will admit, that the intervals between each story of a decomposing body, can be quite slow, and I would suggest fast-forwading (because they seem to drag forever) but dont let you stray you away from the actual film! True work of art. I cant wait to see what Jorg puts out next.
Violent Shit (1989)
The first installment of an awesome series...
Ahhh, Violent Shit. Supossedly one of the most bloody/disgusting movies ever to grace film. Not true, but gorey non-the-less. This shot-on-video super low-budget film from acclaimed German Splatter director Andreas Schnaas is a relentless look into the eyes of killer named Karl the Butcher. The version I have of this movie is the Special Edition Trilogy DVD, direct from German with NO Subtitles, so there-fore i could not follow along, but I dont think that it really matters in this case. Gallons of "paintish" looking blood, with some really original death scenes make this a vile movie to be sought after for decades to come! Wall to wall blood in this film, and you cant go wrong! Although, not the best in the trilogy, it is still an amazing movie. If you are looking for a "good-taste/art house" film, then please DO NOT watch! But, if you are looking for a film that will tear your insides out & play jump rope with your intestines, then please, God, Rent this!
Splat-O-Meter: 6 out of 10, just because it is the corner stone for an even better sequal!
