The Irregulars (2021)
better than expected
So sure. It did turn me off a bit with the unusual casting choice for what I am used for the time period, but this fits well in the YA genre. I liked the overall quality of the show and all the actors in the series. I will watch again if there is another season. Wonderful premise. Predictable story line. However, I can't take away from everyone and things in this series. Entertaining show. I enjoyed it. Give it a spin and see if this is your cup of tea.
Seuwiteuhom (2020)
I really wanted to like this show...
The Kingdom still is the golden standard of Netflix K-Drama if you are interested in Netflix Korean shows. That said, I only watched a few Korean movies, the Kingdom, and this show. Other Korean shows on Netflix didn't quite catch my fancy yet so I stick with what I said about the Kingdom. Korean movies are generally good or excellent.
So about this show:
A few good/excellent early episode, but it turns into a mashed potato.
Some CG works are hokey, but creatures and special effects in the show are generally good or great.
It follows the Shonen Japanese anime/manage trope. I am guessing the webtoon follows the similar formula.
Music choice is really regrettable as well. Warrior, I think, is the song that you will hate after 2~3 episodes. BEWHY song is good and I wish the show just featured the Korean talents.
Possible Spoiler:
One last thing. This show also features the annoying teenager and children trope that seem to show up a lot in Asian shows. It's not as bad as the infamous child character(s) from some of those old Kaiju movies.
Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
Movie for old men
Can't say I always enjoy the Rambo movie.
Second one was best for me.
This movie is fine. Cringe worth first half, but it went out with bang with a lot of unnecessary violence. I took 1 star out just because the movie still seems to force 'Murica! F*yeah! and Mexican-gangstah-so-bad narrative.
However, it was okay for what it is. Rest in peace, Rambo. Rest in peace, Sylvester Stallone. And BTW, there is no real spoiler in any review here. A lot of people die. Some more than others.
Alien Warfare (2019)
Thought this was a dark comedy before I started watching it
So. I thought this was a dark comedy. It wasn't. I did watch for about an hour before I gave up. I don't think I will watch it again. Maybe it has its place in the movie history. It wasn't for me. I do find it ironic that I am reviewing this movie, but I just wanted to say something before I went to bed.
Myeong-ryang (2014)
good if you want a naval battle
Recommend reading about Yi Sun Shin before watching this movie. It's relatively difficult to follow the first half of this movie if you don't know something about him. Do yourself a favor and wiki Yi sun shin. It will give a quick glimpse into the man and back drops of this conflict. All historical accounts indicate that one ship went against superior numbers and he won. There are a lot of dramatic interpretations, but you will experience general gist of how he exploited fear in his own men and Japanese navy which suffered heavy casualties by Yi over 6 years of war. One other note: Korean uses a flat bottom ship. Japanese uses more traditional design. Korean navy has zero turtle iron clad ship in this engagement. That should be enough to enjoy one of the best ancient naval battle captured by this movie.
The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
It's a comic book movie.
I was lucky enough to see this movie early. I am surprised how little spoilers came out of the previews and other early viewing engagements. I really hope that Nolan will provide an extended cut version of this movie because I feel like there were two or three movies worth of stuff in this final chapter of the Batman trilogy. I agreed with many critics who didn't like this movie and I can see why, but just like any other Nolan movies, this deserve multiple viewings. All the hints and foreshadowing are right in the movie. However, those aren't apparently unless you are some sort of super freaks who don't want to watch the first viewing for what it is worth: story. It is a comic book movie. It's self-important and pretentious, but I didn't care. I loved the every minute of the movie and its turns and twists. I give 9 out of 10. It does define that comic book can be a seriously fun movie if anything else. There seem to be too many deus ex machine moments, but I didn't care. I loved the Nolan trilogy and I enjoyed it immensely. Christian Bale's batman, in my mind, is the best batman movie ever made. Cat woman should have more screen times. And Miranda does deserve better character development. All I know is that I will be watching this movie at least two more times with two different opinionated nerds and I am sure they will love and hate this movie for what it is: it's a Gorraham Comic Book Movie.
For your information, I watched the regular version. I will be watching two more IMAX versions and gonna see if they feel different.
Assault on Precinct 13 (2005)
Okay movie for a gun enthusiast.
There is only one thing that made an impression on me in this movie: Gun!!
I was watching tonight and thought "I wish there are gun manufacturer's Logos popping up every time guns come into a scene": They all did look cool and sounded interesting. The special force guys' (SWAT or whatever you want to call them) gears looked cool too. All the other human characters just felt really flat and generic. Ethan was okay. Morpheus was Morpheus. Girls looked pretty in a dress and mini-skirt (minus one lady in the movie). Ja-rule
uh...why is he in the movie? The plot is nothing you want to write home about. It's a brainless and interestingly intriguing hardware movie. It actually does remind me of some of those mindless Japanimation with no plot but some cool scenes and sequences with hardware (guns, vehicles, etc). However, I must say that this movie is better than those Japanimation featuring guns and mini-skirted girls with no plot.
I give 6 out of 10. Maybe 7 if I am drunk.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)
one of the most "cute" movie ever made!!
Well, there you have it. I don't know what I just watched (well, that's not true, I know what I watched and I hope you feel the same way after seeing this movie), and I am watching for the 5th time in on day. I hope Wes has a lot more future in him after this movie. I thought the Royal Tenenbaums was good, but this movie tops the RT easily on my scale.
Everything about this movie is just fantastic. Music, stop motion animation, creativity, acting, everything works for me. It's odd. It's strange, but it's beautiful in many many ways.
I didn't care much about Bottle Rocket or Rushmore. The Royal Tenenbaums was good and this movie establishes him as one of my favorite director/writer list. It's a brilliant movie.
Eom
Dom durakov (2002)
So what can you do as an individual?
It's another one of those war movies. One of what you say? One of those: Saving Private Ryan, Prisoner of the mountains, Battle of Algiers, and Apocalypses now redux. I don't know what's wrong with me lately, but I have watched too many anti-war movies. What's the point of all these conflicts? They give good materials for other people to write and shoot films. And they give good materials to have nice conversations with your friends over beers and wines. I hate men. I hate human beings. Can we ever wash blood on our hands? I hate this movie and movies like this. And yet.my soul wouldn't stop breathing in the stench. It's an interesting war flick. I found it mostly satisfying except the repeated appearance of Bryan Adams. Yes, I understand his scenes. Yes, it does make the movie a bit more star-power. However, the messages have been conveyed clearly without dragging him in every so often. I recommend this movie if you wanna bath in messages of pointlessness of war and blah. What can we do to stop the vicious cycle of human tragedy and stupidity? Is there a hope?
Cold Mountain (2003)
I get it....no, I don't get it....
I am just gonna write something short.
I went to see this movie b/c I like the civil war history and I like the English Patient.
I hate to generalize stuff, but I recognize this movie as a classic epic-wannabe-movie, but I couldn't get into the movie like I did with the English Patient. Jude seems to fair okay in the movie, but Nicole seems to be so out of place in the movie. I liked the first half of the movie, but I couldn't follow all the little episodic stories that Inman had to go thru in the movie. Does the movie do a justice to the book? I didn't read the book so I can't comment on that, but it just seems so odd. There are some great human stories going on, but they don't seem to tie into the movie. In any case, I am not even sure I can recommend this movie to anyone. I give 5 out 10.
Equilibrium (2002)
Not bad
I don't care what other people wrote about this movie. This movie isn't the great sci-fi flick, but it came quite close to it. I actually enjoyed watching it. The philosophy behinds the movie was laughable and I felt like I was back in the mid school. In any case, this movie was like watching a live action anime. Gun-kata idea seemed to be well developed, but it just didn't seem to make any sense (I did some karate before....). Christian Bale does look pretty cool and I almost hope that he was in the Matrix instead of ....uh...what's that guy's name that does whoah i know kung fu line? You know what I mean. I give a good mark for this movie. I will give 3 out of 5 stars.
