The Importance of Being Earnest (2002)
2 thumbs down
I was SO disappointed in this version. The usually wonderful Judi Dench's portrayal of Lady Bracknell (due to her direction I'm sure) was horrible! Missed the boat entirely. I guess the director forgot this was supposed to be a biting, witty, drawing room comedy. See Dennis Littrell's insightful comments on this site for more. All in all, this film was pretty pathetic. I'd say save your eyesight but visually it was gorgeous. Perhaps save your ears would be closer to the truth. Better to see the Sir Michael Redgrave version for a true look at what Oscar Wilde was trying to accomplish. (Did Reese have the same 'British accent' coach as Gwyneth Paltrow? Very unconvincing and painful to listen to.) And where was my favorite line, "I'll wait for you forever if it doesn't take too long!" says Gwendolyn to Jack. TATTOO?!?!?! I don't think so!
Lili (1953)
Wonderful story...
In 1953 I was 5 and LILI was my favorite movie. My parents were cool enough to take me to see it 3 (THREE!) times and they even bought me the soundtrack record. I'd try to see it every time it played on TV over the years (not very often) and at college screenings. I taped it when it was on PBS not too long ago and now my granddaughter who's 5 loves it too. Talk about genetics! This is a wonderful, haunting story. Leslie Caron is PERFECT in the title role. The puppets are fabulous and the rest of the cast are brilliant. PLEASE see this if you enjoy "simple" romantic stories with no special effects, nudity, bad language, nor violence! Interestingly I have been married twice, my first husband was a puppeteer and my second (present) husband is a magician. Hmmmm...
The Shell Seekers (1989)
**Avoid** **this** **movie**!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The book was one of the most evocative and compelling I've ever read. And I was very happy to see it was being made into what I thought would be a quality film. Unfortunately, the WHOLE point of the book was LOST in this TV version. Major plot elements were changed or dropped. There were only 3 good things that I can say about this version:
#1 Angela Lansbury was perfectly cast,
#2 The scenery was fabulous
#3 The acting was very good for a TV movie. But if you think you'll be viewing a faithful retelling of the classic "Shell Seekers"... forget it! Save your eyesight for the book! PLEASE!
