Altered Carbon: Resleeved (2020)
A well choreographed brutal flick... missing a few episodes
This could have been top tier as a tv show or with an entertainment movie with an additional 30 minutes runtime. Expand the relationships, make the twist satisfying, make the lore make sense. I feel like it isn't a fault of anything other than cutting and runtime. I can't imagine they didn't have these thoughts in mind when making it. But I'm sharing them with potential viewers as a beware sticker.
As a ten episode run or a 2+ hour movie, I could imagine the cracks filled easily. It was well choreographed, with amazing action, decent performances (watched as subbed, Japanese audio), good even out of context to the books/show.
But, again, the cracks that came from a lack of context and a bunch of elements made me crave more. I felt like I watched a season of something but kept leaving the room and missed a bunch of connective tissue.
Still, the hallway fight scene was worth the whole watch.
Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)
An almost great movie
And amazing movie, ruined by the court room, drama side of things where instead of the own rules that was set up by the court room in the first questioning is completely ruined by how the litigators go through their questions and how stupid and ridiculous the judges for allowing it, and it just feels so dated, and Sad that they really could've had an opportunity to pull out serious drama, but instead just kind of play off all of the things that are previously been said the new emotions brought up during questioning, ruined by the lawyers questions in their actions and behaviours and not having been put on a lead by the judge it ruined the movie I was enjoying it and I was looking forward to the titular scene, but there it goes and what am I supposed to do but say that it was a movie that could've been amazing and was kind of ruined.
Call Me by Your Name (2017)
Beautiful but just didn't quite get me
If I were to as succinctly put it, I thought that the acting too clearly reflected the script in the sense that it felt like most of the characters were of the same personality. It isn't a bad thing to see the makers mark in the script but it seemed as though the direction left the actors in a position of often reading lines, not embodying characters. And to be honest, this wasn't often; the acting just felt off occasionally. Otherwise, the story floated along as if in a fantasy setting while being very grounded in reality; the setting and cinematography were perfectly aligned; the acting was often amazing; and, the soundtrack was a beautiful accompaniment. I don't think I would rewatch it but I will certainly give my appreciation for the art and beauty it holds.
