RoboCop (2014)
Delivering as promised
It was a great experience. I was waiting for this one for quite some time and it almost definitely didn't disappoint.
The movie is the remake of the original RoboCop series, and proved to be every bit as entertaining as the old one.
The plot is on the lines of the original movie. Based in the year 2028 where a cop Alex Murphy, played by Joel Kinnaman (from "The Killing" fame), is investigating an illegal arms racket that goes real deep, and in this process gets hacked.
In the interim Omni- Corp (part of OCP), a robotics organization which has successfully launched robots & droids all over the world except the US is planning to launch in America as well. And in this process are looking for a human volunteer to build a cyborg; And officer Murphy turns out to be the final choice.
The movie is more or less the old story but with an exciting new packaging. The highlight is the new black-suit. The agility level of this Robo is also much better along with the bike.
The action is superb.
Well done team.
Dedh Ishqiya (2014)
Fantastically satisfying!!
A wonderfully shot film. I would say it was a good experience. Though a long 2 hours and 50 minute movie, it didn't feel so; as the story-line and screenplay is quite brilliant. Also the characters have been defined quite well.
Usually the reason for making a sequel is banking on the success of the first or earlier release, which turns out to be disappointing and unnecessary, but it wasn't the case here.
"Dedh Ishqiya", is an extremely pleasant experience, plus the hilarious characterization of "Babban" (played by Arshad Warsi) is just great.
Great performances by all actors; Naseeruddin Shah - great as always and Huma and Madhuri's work was equally good. But a special mention to Vijay Raaz. He just takes the cake.
"Jaan Mohammad" played by Vijay, is a power hungry politician who after engulfing everything that he could, has a single point agenda, to marry Begum Para (played by Madhuri Dixit), a widow of the previous Nawaab, who wants to fulfill her dying husbands' wish that she should remarry to a poet; And to achieve this she keeps an annual competition. This is where the fun starts as Khalu (played by Naseer) disguised as Nawaab of Chandrapur, who is smitten by Begum Para (Madhuri), enters the competition, only to find a tough challenge against Jaan Mohammad (Vijay).
The movie has some very well written dialogs and the overall play-out is just really, really NICE.
Kudos team entire team, especially to Vishal Bhardwaj and Abhishek Chaubey.
Dhoom:3 (2013)
High on expectations, low deliverance!!
It was a highly anticipated movie of the year; And as it was released in the month of December, and that to so close to Christmas; it was no surprise that would get a lot of audience. But even after a fully star studded cast especially Aamir Khan, it failed to impress. The "Dhoom series", which is known for it high octane stunts and bikes, did give that thrill but not to the extent as was expected from the franchise.
The showcasing or promos of the movie, had Aamir in an explosive role, with Katrina Kaif giving some exquisite dances. But the trailers did exactly what they are supposed to do....bloat the picture.
The movie starts with a great poise, but simmers down somewhere in the middle.
Sahir (played by Aamir) is the young prodigy of a great magician, Iqbal (played by Jackie). Iqbal (Jackie Shroff) though being a great magician of his time, fails to keep up with the money ended world, and ends up loosing his circus and act to a Bank; and finally loosing the fight and ends up killing himself. This in turn makes Sahir (Aamir Khan), venture into revenge; And in his quest for retaliation he meets Jai Dixit (played by Abhishek).
A.C.P Jai Dixit is back in his usual method with Ali (played by Uday). They do bring some good humor to the screen, but is quite short lived. Especially as A.C.P Jai (Abhishek Bachchan) makes his entry on a Auto-Rickshaw; where as Ali (Uday Chopra), rides a super-sexy racing bike. The entire film has a lot of BMW written all over it (an advertising stint we assume). The new eye-candy in the film is Tabrett Bethell, playing the role of Victoria. A good edition, but that't about it
The main secret & story-line of the movie is taken from, "The Prestige". Which is copied not in a bad way, and hence does live-up but the suspense is too short lived, and quite obvious.
Overall the movie gives an average experience to the common cinema goer, and a below average feel to others.
An okay-one-time watch. Though wouldn't put too many hopes for the sake of the holiday spirit.
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
A delightful experience for the senses.
Wow!! This is the first word that comes to my mind.
It is a wonderful story of love and emotions. The movie revolves around Pat (Bradley Cooper), a man who has had issues with his relationships, making him go through some mental trauma, leading him to being sent to an institution, from where his mother is finally able to get him out. A chaotic marriage with his wife, Nikki; where he has been trying to get back in spite of a restraining order, ever since his last violent outbreak. An up & down relationship his father, played by Robert De Niro, who is retired and spends his time and money on betting on football games, being a ardent fan of the Philadelphia Eagles; which is one of the only thing keeping the family together. A small role played Shea Whigham, of his brother, who doing well in life and like brag about it with brother, Pat.
The movie takes a turn when Pat, trying to recover and show improvement to his family & doctor (played by Anupam Kher), meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), another heart-broken case. And this is where it gets interesting.
The handling of the movie is very delightful and engaging, reminds me of Midnight in Paris, though a different movie-making style but a very similar approach. The screenplay is brilliant; backed by some excellent performances by Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence (she is great like always). There scenes together are wonderful. Other cast did well too, especially Robert De Niro. After this movie, I'd have to say that Chris Tucker (plays the role of Pat's friend and, was in the mental-hospital with him) is an extremely under rated actor, and I felt that he could have been utilized/direct much more.
The film takes you though a wonderful journey which can best be described, only when you see it yourself.
Overall a great watch, one my best this year. Kudos, David O. Russell!!
Enemy at the Gates (2001)
An excellent example of semi-fiction!!
Great watch!! A very well made movie that depicts the story of a great hero and outlines the true events during WW2, when the third-Reich was pressing against a meeker red army at Stalingrad. An excellent example of semi-fiction, the movie's central theme being a battle of human-emotions and the love-for-the-country. Lays out the idea of a true socialistic existence; where the needs of the many outweighs that of one or few. And alternately shows a love triangle between soldiers of the motherland. "Vaslli Zaitsev (Jude Law)"- a simple Russian soldier who is an excellent marksman, becomes a major hurdle for the Germans and a ray of hope for Russia. His abilities as a sniper lead him to finding love in a comrade, jealousy in a friend and a true-adversary in a time when a soldier was just a means to an end.
Excellent performances by Jude Law, Ed Harris and others. Great direction, of an unbelievable story of heroism. Overall a marvelous piece of work.
movie.
Bodyguard (2011)
Unbelievably intolerable
Though a reasonable storyline, the screenplay doesn't do justice. Very ordinary performances. Over the top actions with unjustifiable dialogues, which is a very common thing for a Salman Khan movie; as is expected. Worth a watch if you are a die-hard fan. Music is pretty good. So is the choreography, especially the Katrina Kaifeng sequence.
The story starts with unquestionable irregularities buts cuts it pretty okay for about half an hour with a typical Salman entry as has become quite often in his movies. The second us pretty descent when compared to entire length. The music, specially the "I love you" number has been picturised well. The movie wasn't too long and the plot wasn't stretched either which is good thing and goes in the favor of the director. Unfortunately the same can't said for the direction of scenes itself. Overall an okay-one-time watch; then again, maybe not.
Overall an okay or one time watch. Then again, maybe not.
