The Miniaturist (2017)
A movie is not a book and vice versa
Often people lament that a movie was not like the book that preceded it. For those people, this movie must be like a godsend. It follows the book religiously. And due to this, it falls flat. It is one way to build up tension in a written story, but using that exactly same build-up rarely works on screen. With more liberty to mold the plot to fit the screen, this could really have been a good mini-series.
Detective McLean (2015)
Cop meets teenage angst
Someone opened up a can of clichés and this show rolled out. Teenagers are either sulky, angry or catatonic. Parents are either good or bad. Sprinkle with average acting and obvious plots and, voilà, there's your new TV show.
It's a shame the writers haven't tried to come with stories and personalities that aren't black or white. If that wasn't clear enough, the scene where they sit around the table praying before dinner already hints that the show's creators aim not to offend anyone. The tag line of "Every line will be crossed" is therefore wildly misplaced. They won't be crossing any lines and every person in the show can be put in a well-defined box.
True Blood (2008)
Gets good after 1st season
I had to struggle through season 1, because I thought the acting was a bit overdone and the story presented too seriously. Not to mention that it was really hard to like the main character. With season 2, however, characters gain depth, there's some tongue-in-cheekiness, a bit of humor and more subplots. This makes it all far more entertaining to watch. Some subplots are great stories in themselves, such as the story of the spirit who took Arlene's child. If you had trouble with season 1, I highly recommend to fast-forward to season 2. Even though you may find Sookie a daft irritating chick, the bad characters all make up for it as they're all well-acted. Maryann in season 2 and Russell Edgington in season 3 were brilliant.
