Let's start with the bad parts:
Everything bad that happens has almost no logic or reason behind it. It is so comical when you look back and see that the entire chain of events that leads up to the finale hinges on Harrison getting high and blurting out his father's real name.
Harrison was supposed to have an arc that never came. Having been abandoned and abused, he finds his way back to his dad while being in a very bad state. But by the end he gets himself into an even worse position. The actor who plays Harrison kinda comes off as being whiney and annoying.
I have been a huge fan of the series, but this version of Dexter is almost unrecognizable to me. He is a stupid, lazy, arrogant, sloppy and naive. He seems like the worst parent ever and there are no redeeming qualities to him. He constantly 'wants' his son to be 'him' almost as if to validate his sick fantasies.
The writers seem to go lazy by rehashing the same formula from the earlier seasons. Have Dexter contantly talk to an imaginary character, have innocent people get killed and finallly build up tension until someone finds out who he really is. Rinse and repeat.
The way they handle Dexter's death here is painfully obvious and awful!
I expected a follow up season where he is hunted by Batista and Bishop, gets caught and put on death row. Growing madder by the minute he shows off his true colors. There's nothing to hide anymore, the mask is off and everyone sees him for what he truly is. It would have been a fitting end if they had him on the lethal injection table with photos of all of his victims hanging around him.
The good parts:
Dexter's death! Now lets be honest, Dexter is a psychopath who uses killing bad people simply as a justification to fulfill his urges, nothing more. He manipulates people around him to stay alive and get exactly what he wants.
The code was crafted by Harry only to let his son have a fighting chance. Harry already knew that it was gonna end bad for him right from the beginning. I agree, rubbing out sickos might have done good but there is absolutely no justification for murder whatsoever.
With or without Harrison in the picture, everytime Dexter tries to lead a normal life, innocent people die. In my opinion, there is no other way Dexter's saga could have ended other than him dying. Dexter will always be prey to his urges despite him trying to control it. The Dark Passenger had to be put down one way or another.
Kurt Caldwell! Oh my god the villain here one is of the best I have seen in a while! Clancy Brown has a terrific range and I don't think anyone could have done a better job. Thank you Mr Brown for such a wonderful performance.
The setting and cinematography are amazing. Cold, slow paced and ominous. A stark contrast from the earlier setting in Miami which is more in touch with Dexter's true persona.
Conclusion: At first, it did manage to reignite some of the old familiar fondness I had for the series before in a different way. It felt promising, but then it didn't quite deliver what it could have. They played it too safe and so I see a lot of wasted potential here.
It looks like there's a curse that has befallen this series when it comes to finales. And just like before, it definitely could have been written better.
