One Piece (2023)
Is this really what people want?
One Piece live action adaptation is basically a carbon copy of the first 40 or so episodes of the animation series. Although it is impressive feat that this adaptation was made, I can't help but feel that fans of the animation series should demand more than this.
Not only is there no point to making a carbon copy such as this, it also does not work. The over the top emotions and unrealistic action scenarios are overemphasized because that is the artistic style of comics and animation (or manga and anime if you prefer). Personally, I was expecting this to be properly adapted and transitioned to a more realistic style that is appropriate for live action. This just feels like a cartoon with real actors.
Apart from Monkey (portrayed by Inaki Godoy) and Nami (Emily Rudd), acting is atrocious. It is a chore to stay focused when anybody else is in the scene.
Fans of the original series should do themselves a favor by demanding more from the movie studios, and not this lazy adaptation. If not, then be prepared for other animated series to be carbon copied as well. Mind as well just watch the original!
Dorosute no hate de bokura (2020)
Enjoyable ride
A very enjoyable ride that does not have a dull moment. Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes is about 70 minutes long and is shot as one continuous scene without feeling like a gimmick (though with few hard to see cuts).
If you are an avid fan of the time travel genre, you will not be disappointed. The story is a simple one but the creative scenarios are interesting and the continuity is impeccable. Sure. It is no masterpiece, but a very enjoyable watch, even after multiple viewings as I have done already.
The movie does not get too clever, as you are left figuring out the sequence of events alongside the characters.
Andor (2022)
Gets better after weak opening
The first two to two and a half episodes are.terrible. Opening premise is weak. We are never told about our protagonist or why we should care about him. The beginning feels a bit like Spaceballs, with the over the top incompetent security force.
However, the series gets better after it gets up and running. Character development and new Star Wars lore is introduced gradually. The costumes are CGI are impressive.
The contrasting quality between the first 2-3 episodes and the rest of the series is really quite striking. If you find it difficult to get through at first, perhaps leave it on in the background. Andor becomes fully enjoyable after the initial slog.
As with most series these days, the series ends with only partial closure. Most storylines are left in a to-be-continued state.
With that said, I look forward to continuing the series!
First 2-3 episodes 3.5-4/10
Rest of series 7/10.
No Hard Feelings (2023)
Predictable and not funny
In No Hard Feelings, Jennifer Lawrence plays a penniless young adult named Maddie who takes up a part time job fake-dating an immature high school kid whose parents want him to mature before he is sent off to college.
If you've seen the trailer, you've seen the movie. Everything plays out exactly how you would expect.
Percy is a sheltered "incel" who has never had any experience with the opposite sex. Andrew Barth Feldman's portrayal was extremely obnoxious as he is a total jerk to Maddie for the entire movie. The two go on a few escapades, and then before you know it Maddie has real feelings for Percy now.
There are a few scenes here which are supposed to be funny. But fall flat. Perhaps they should've used a laugh track.
The budget of this movie was $45 million. It looks like it was filmed over a weekend at a rental property and neighboring small town. The story and script is very random and sloppy. It is a real mystery where this budget went into. The actors look like they are just wearing their everyday attire. There is nothing impressive or memorable.
Matthew Broderick is an also mess. What the heck happened to him?
Sarinja-ng-Nangam (2024)
Starts off Strong...
A Killer Paradox starts off with a bang, but ends with a whimper. The first two episodes are really engaging, and keep you guessing to see what will happen next. The cinematography and storytelling is also top notch. The acting throughout is also very good.
Unfortunately, after that the quality quickly falls off and we are left with a run-of-the-mill vigilante origin story.
Episode five deserves commendation. Here, we are shown how an ordinary person suddenly commits a fatal crime of passion, and thus becomes target fodder for our vigilante. It would have been nice to see more episodes like this one.
Real Time with Bill Maher: Jean Twenge/Van Jones/Ann Coulter (2024)
Just watch New Rules
An otherwise good show ruined by Ann Coulter. I hope Bill does not invite her back on the show, she was insufferable. Every time Ann speaks, she spreads misinformation or conspiracy theories. Although she does give Bill Maher and Van Jones some time to speak, she still talks over them and tries to get the last word in.
The opening guest was interesting. She talked about generational differences. It was nice to have an academic on as a guest rather than another politician for a change.
If you are to watch this episode, just watch New Rules on YouTube. It was one of the better segments so far this season.
Fresh Off the Boat (2015)
First season was worth watching
Plight of immigrant Chinese family in an unfamiliar land (Orlando) shown in a creative and entertaining way. Series is based off a memoir written by Eddie Huang (portrayed here by Hudson Yang).
Randall Park (Louis Huang) and Constance Wu (Jessica Huang) both shine in their respective roles as the parents. However, the children are poorly written and lack any character growth.
Overall it is an interesting and worthwhile perspective, but falls into the trap of becoming another typical sitcom. After an above average first season, the quality precipitously falls off for the remainder as a lot of ideas are lazily rehashed and recycled.
