Scream (2015)
Truly Horrific And Absolutely Well Written
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MINUS SPOILERS, BEWARE.
As a fan of the movie series and the genre, this was an absolute surprise to me. I was skeptic at the beginning because... you know: MTV. But curiosity won me and thanks to Netflix I watched the whole season in a day. It's hard to me to get hooked up to a TV series, but that I was shocked by everything, really got me. Like every movie, novel, and show, it has it's flaws, but those flaws really doesn't matter at the end. I'm surprised that many reviewers bash the series and say it's not horror. And let me explain why they are wrong.
"Scream" was, is, and always be my favorite horror movie of all time. It's not a demon, it's not a haunted house, it's not zombie, it's not a nightmare, its real life. To this day the most shocking horror movies to me are the ones that you see that the real monster lies beneath the human psique. "The Silence of the Lambs", "Psycho", "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", God even "Halloween", all lies into the motives of a killer. Yeah, Billy Loomis at the end of the 1st "Scream" says that not all killers have a motive and that makes it scarier, having no motive to kill is pretty terrifying, but he did have one, and the Ghostface in the series (actually referred as Brandon James) has a pretty good motive.
Come one! What is more terrifying these days than spy webcams, family issues, watching your friends die in terrible ways in front of you, cyber bullying and not trusting anyone?
What I liked most of the series is the script. It does have a pretty clever script, and even they spoiled themselves into events that will occur, but they are so subtle that are pretty hard to spot. Even the characters into their conversations are giving all the hints and clues that no one really pay attention to, "because it's a teen series, that 30% of it is romance and we don't actually see a lot of the killer". And that's the scariest of all. Because we are actually seeing who it is right in front of us, but is hard to believe that's him or her.
The script seems by parts written by Kevin Williamson itself, it's witty, it's fun (I lost it when Mia Wallace and Vincent Vega danced again), scary at times, self-referenced and with a lot of pop culture from the 80's, 90's and the 2000's, even where the killing are occurring is a great reference to all horror movies: Lakewood. Hello? "Friday the 13th", "Eden Lake", "The Last House on the Left", "I Spit on Your Grave"? The situations are taken from a lot of horror movies, and what I liked the most of it: The list of don't's. And you know what I mean.
Through out the series are recognizable Randy Meek's list of rules to survive a horror movie, and they are given away all through it in a really subtle way. They don't listed as Rule No. 1, Rule No. 2. No, it's 2015, we don't do that anymore, we don't listen to the rules, but when something is about to happen, one character often say to the other "you shouldn't do that". Is more remarkable in the last chapter (obvius to Wes Craven's untimely dead), the best one is when Noah in Brooke's house says: "I'm not be right back". It's a sure laugh, and... he makes it to the end.
And being a sequel to the movies... Yep, the deads are more elaborate. And sadist. I'm not gonna say what dead's are and who died, but they are deads of characters you really feel pity for them, and the dead at the end of Chapter 7 is... it changed the course of the series entirely, the horror really intensifies, it's hard to see after it, because you see that the motives of Brandon James are really painful and once you get into his game, you better watch-out.
The last moments are intense, I was really into the show and through it I was really thinking "It couldn't be he, it's too obvious" (clearly remind me all the horror movies I've watched) or "nah, it's responsible for this, but not for that". The guessing really relies on the suspense and the thrills and you can't but really feel horrible for these characters. And the last revelation (in the last 20 seconds) really gave me the chills.
MTV really surprised me. It is a beautiful homage to Craven and the series fights with the clichés of a horror movie, extra points for that. Even I dare to say that the series scared me more than the actual films.
The only things that really bother me is, why Noah had blood on his forehead at the end of Chapter 1? And what happened to Brooke's father when the final slaugther cut loose?
I can't wait for Season 2.
