La guerra de los mundos. La verdadera historia (2012)
Timothy Hines' true tribute to the classic SciFi novel
Before starting this review, I have one thing to say... STOP BASHING Steven Spielberg's 2005 adaptation!!! It is not a bad movie! It's good! Sure, the way the aliens come to Earth is odd and the two kids are annoying, but the acting is good, especially Tom Cruise and Tim Robbins' performances, and it does more justice to the book than the old one does! It has actually as many flaws as the 1953 has, flaws I'm shocked some people never notice, like the strings that hold the war machines, the characters being undeveloped (in the 2005 film Ray goes through a character development unlike them) and the "explaination" of why the martians wanted to invade Earth is flawed compared to the one in the book which made a lot more sense! Bottomline, quit hating the 2005 movie, it's not a bad film or a bad adaptation! Just STOP.
...And now that we got that elephant out of the room, let's talk about this film. Now THIS is how Timothy Hines should have done his adaptation from the beginning! Something that does justice to the book and it's original on it's own.
The way they played like if the War of the Worlds really happened with fictional documents and pictures while being obvious at times at how they made the effect, has a such old-school charm. That's what this movie is: charming. Well, probably to all the fans of the book like myself, but even so I think everyone can enjoy this little gem of a fictional documentary. I also believe it's a VERY good introduction to someone who knows nothing about the source material. The Tripods look really good and I loved how the martians were haunting creatures that are shown rarely, it really sets a good tone. Everything is so fresh, the idea is genuine and never done before... I probably like it more than others because this is the adaptation I would have done if I was a filmmaker. Just with a bigger budget. And this is where we come to the negatives...
For the negatives... This movie carries some of the campy nature and stiff performances that Hines has shown in his previous adaptation. The dramatic scenes, filmed in sepia tones to blend in with the historical footage, are clumsily staged and acted, you know, just like in that film. But again, what saves the movie it's its conception and charm.
And so I must give this movie a 7/10 It's not perfect, it's not the ultimate adaptation of WOTW, but it's a damn close one in my opinion. Go see it.
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (1988)
One of my all time favorites
This film is just incredible. When you're not being sucked in by all the imagination, visuals, and surprising interesting characters, you're sucked in by the technical wizardly that makes this movie work. But it's weird because not once do you question how they did so many of the effects; how can you when you have so much creativity just exploding around you? This is the amazing story of Baron Münchausen, who actually was a real life person in history (so he was a sort of Chuck Norris of the 1700), who wants to prove the authenticity of his adventures in a dark and greedy enlightenment time. The Baron and his friends will face the most extreme places and elements: air, space, fire, sea and more. The many obstacles seem chaotic and impassible, but it's the golden and yet innocent heart of Münchausen and his friends that shows us the way. It's a wonderful movie about believing in yourself and how our dreams and imagination can bring us far.
Kick-Ass (2010)
My all time favorite Film
Kick-Ass is my all time favorite movie. Why? Because it has EVERYTHING I always love: surreal images, dark comedy, over the top jokes, bloody fight scenes, good character development and of course superheroes. I can't see why some people said that the main character doesn't do nothing. Dave Lizewski single-handedly saved a man's life and just about every word that pours from his mouth (and narration) is worth quoting. He's the only person fighting criminals without a personal vendetta and a character that you genuinely feel bad for when he gets publicly tortured, and it feels good when he redeems himself at the end. Aside of the original graphic novel, one of my favorite comic books is Leo Ortolani's "Rat-Man" and Kick-Ass looks like a live-action version with humans of it, because it shows what the superheroes really mean and their true messages. I like how it's tone ranges from light and droll to dark and brooding. This movie is an insane mix: it's an action movie, a gangster movie, a comedy movie, a high school-buddy movie, a dramatic movie and of course a superhero movie, it has everything! The only downfall of the film in my opinion is the romantic factor between Dave and Katie, it was seriously unacceptable and rushed, even in a movie like this one. But aside of that, I truly adore Kick-Ass. I love how wicked it is, I love how dark it is, I love how frigging' weird it is and most of all I love how spontaneously and without fear takes risks in several points of the plot. I could watch this movie over and over and never get tired of it. It's odd, it's creative, it's my all time favorite movie.
The Nutcracker in 3D (2010)
What were they thinking!!!
I'm sure there's been the occasional viewer that wonders why I do get so angry about movies sometimes. Well, films are something that I'm very passionate about, every movie that I've seen goes from that is praised with comments or hate with every cell of my brain.
And speaking of the literal Devil, we have ourselves "The Nutcracker in 3D"!!!
...This is the worst movie I've ever seen!!!! First of all, Anderi Konchalovsky directed this crap! He previously directed "Runaway Train" and the TV-movie "The Odyssey". I can't accept this!!! How is that possible that he went from a groundbreaking movie and a cult fantasy film to This?!?
What's the point on making a movie with Nazi Rats (They are Mice in the original story, you idiots!!!) that burn toys like how they did to the Jews?!?
OK, if Konchalovsky wanted to make a despotic movie with Nazis represented like greedy rats and other political animal-alike allusions that's OK! It's interesting! ...But leave the classic story of the Nutcracker alone!!!
It would be like... If I make a movie about the tale of Aladdin, where Aladdin is Obama, Jafar is a Bin Laden, Agrabah a New York-alike city destroyed by terrorist attacks and The Genie be an incarnation of Uncle Sam! Oh, and all this weird despotic crap pretended to be a "kids movie". No!No!No!!! That's not how it works!!! I'll describe the two scenes that mostly offended me: the Rat King, after performing a bad-choreographed musical number, kills a shark inside a tank by electrocuting it with a light!!! The second one, the Rat King suddenly rips off the head of a living Drummer Boy with bare hands and for a few seconds he plays volleyball with his Nazi-soldiers using the head of the poor guy and than replace it and act like nothing happened! You know, for KIDS!
But of course, these are the images that comes to your mind when you think of the Nutcracker! ...Nazi creatures that burn toys, kill sharks and play volleyball with the head of their victims HELLO?!?
The movie is an awful waste of money and talent(...If there was ANY!!!), and it sucks balls because for the unappealing Nazi characters, the awful 3D effect and for turning Tchaikovsky's music into horrendous songs that makes "Marry the Mole" look like Bohemian Rhapsody!!!
And I'm not the only person who thinks this "movie" in an abomination: 0% on Rotten Tomatoes! And Roger Ebert said: "The Nutcracker in 3D is one of those rare holiday movies that may send children screaming under their seats." In fact, no kid went to see this movie! The Nutcraker in 3D was a giant NUT-BOMB at the box office!!!
This movie is one of those rare movies that can insult the intelligence of Anybody. Do not watch it.
The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996)
Shut up people. THIS is the Pinocchio movie.
I really hate the Disney movie of Pinocchio. Why? Because it totally destroys the real Pinocchio's image. Pinocchio isn't a such kid-friendly story in his original BOOK (yes, it is a book, not a fairy tale) written by Carlo Collodi. It was a story for everyone yes, but it was also pretty dark and edgy too!
That's why I absolutely love this movie (and hate to the death that awful sequel). I know, like the Disney one, it doesn't follow perfectly the plot of the book, but the big difference is that it actually have MORE things from the book than the Disney one. Also, the book has a pretty long story with lots of things that are difficult to put in a hour and half movie (Roberto Begnigni tried to do that, and we all know that the result was horrible). The classic special effects without CGI are amazing and the acting is great. The style of the movie reminds me a little Terry Gilliam's "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" (1988). This movie is really magic to me and it has all the atmosphere and style of the original book. If only people read more Collodi's book (wich is amazing) and watch less the Disney movie, everybody would agree with me.
This is by far my favorite Pinocchio movie, and one of my favorite movies of all time.
