If I ever had any doubts about director Olivia Wilde, I have none now.
Her latest film is totally predictable, full of one-dimensional characters, filled with clichés, unnecessarily over-complicated and just plain flat. The director does not surprise the viewer at any step, opting for the simplest solutions in an otherwise promising story.
On the plus side, there are some interesting editing tricks here, as well as the music, the style of which is interesting in itself, but combined with the picture gives the impression of being ripped out of another film. The cast also seems appropriate, but the weak script makes the characters played by them lack depth. Perhaps the best example is the main antagonist Frank, played by Chris Pine - a typical "evil-genius" we've seen in hundreds of other stories, except that here, although mysterious, he's not interesting at all.
Big disappointment.
