Seth Meyers: Lobby Baby (2019)
Production-Camera framing
I'd like to give it a higher rating but I was continually distracted by the poor framing of the close up shots. It seems like none of the CU camera operators understand appropriate head room and talk space. I understand the occasional want or need to be creative here or there but to give consistently improper framing on your subject is a huge distraction for the entire piece. I kept finding myself leaning to somehow center-up and tilt up the shots. Were there monitors used in the live shoot? I can't see a director saying that's exactly how it should look. Even when the occasional shot that looks good and is using exaggerated head room or framing, now looks forced because it wasn't used as a unique statement.
Arrival (2016)
disappointing
I've seen this story told before. If you've seen "The Abyss" you know what I'm talking about. Very similar, even plot motivations and scene structure are the same. Some elements of 2010 and Contact are thrown in there to vary it up a bit. Not sure if I call it lazy writing or just taking bits of other movies that work and creating something new(ish).
