Tenet (2020)
Great film marred by woke casting
I love Christopher Nolan films and this has pretty much everything his previous greats have had, except the lead character. John David Washington is just completely wrong for the role, to the point you have to think Nolan was pressured into casting him by studio executives pushing their woke agenda. He is passable in the action sequences, but horribly wooden in all other scenes and the lack of chemistry between him and Elizabeth Debicki is painfully awkward. I know Nolan has denied his hand was forced on this in interviews, but it is just so obvious, given how perfect the casting of all the other characters is in this film is and how perfect the casting was in all his other films. Such a shame, as otherwise it would have been up there with his, and by extension the whole of cinema's, very best.
Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
Give the audience what they want!
Would you rather watch some tedious film about lefty political issues, like race, gender or sexuality, or would you like to watch Stallone dismember a Mexican cartel? We all know the answer to that one. I wish a few more critics and Hollywood executives did too.
A Perfect Planet (2021)
Too Preachy
The first half of each episode is fantastic; amazing cinematography and fascinating insights into the animal kingdom. I would generally advise viewers to turn off at about the half way mark though, as the second half is a long, repetitive lecture on how awful human beings are and how they are destroying the planet.
David Attenborough has fronted some truly wonderful shows in his time, but he really has become a bit of a bore recently. Like a drunken relative, he just keeps hammering away at the same point, long after everyone else, having heard it all before, have switched off. I'm not sure what he's trying to achieve, as surely everyone is aware of the majority of these facts. All he's now doing is alienating his audience.
I never thought I'd say this, but I think it might be time for the BBC to put the great man out to pasture and bring some fresh blood into the natural history department.
Bloodshot (2020)
How is Vin Diesel rich and famous????
He can't act, he has no natural charisma, he's not good looking and he's not in particularly good shape. It genuinely baffles me that this man has ever been cast in a movie, let alone had such a successful career. I assume he must have some serious dirt on somebody high up in Hollywood (who hasn't already been exposed).
The trouble is all the movies he stars in are the sort of movies I love - brain dead action films - so every once in a while I watch one. Every time I am infuriated by how utterly awful he is as a leading man. Hopefully next time I will remember to give the film a miss.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
What a way to end.....
This was so bad I'm going to have to rewatch Episode I to figure out which is the worst Star Wars film of all time. Credit where it's due, the effects were absolutely superb, but I just wished they'd saved some of that budget and spent it on decent scriptwriters and actors (I know they were stuck with Rey and Finn by this stage, but that was Abrahams'/Disney's fault too, so I think still relevant). Horrible pacing, incoherent plot and generally lacklustre acting amount to a very poor end to a generally disastrous trilogy. Disney should be ashamed, but so should Lucas, for selling his beloved franchise to these greedy, talentless woketards. What a shame.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Pretentious Drivel
Almost certainly the least enjoyable film I've watched in the last few years. It's the sort of deliberately weird twaddle that "arty" people" and critics pretend to really like, because they think it makes them seem enigmatic and cool. Apparently it was based on Greek mythology, but I think it reminds me more of a Danish parable........The Emperor's New Clothes. Like the child who shouts out that the Emperor is naked, I shall point out the obvious truth, that this film is tedious, pretentious, nonsensical crap. Avoid.
Silent Witness: Greater Love: Part 1 (2013)
Unrealistic Liberal Nonsense
This is one of the worst pieces television I have seen in a long time.
My main irritations are as follows.
1) Nikki would never be allowed near the captured insurgents 2) Nobody, anywhere, ever would care that much about a group of terrorists who, only a couple of days before, had been trying to kill them 3) The plot "twist" is so obvious it could have been tattooed on Leo's forehead for the entire episode and not been any less of a shock.
This is just appallingly ham-fisted writing from somebody who has clearly let their extreme liberal views blind them to the ridiculousness of this "plot".
A shockingly bad end to what was otherwise a good series.
Whoever wrote this episode should be sacked.
Rubbish. Rubbish. Rubbish.
