Friday Night Football: Thursday Night Football: Round 10 - Gold Coast vs Geelong (2024)
Gcs vs Geel, at TIO Stadium.
Humid and slippery, hardly football conditions. Many key outs for both sides; Cameron, Hawkins, Dangerfield, Duncan and De Koning for Geelong, Witts, Powell and Walter the Suns. Conway with a poor turnover across goal, turning into Lukosius kicking the opener for Gold Coast, Stengle soccers through the reply. Andrew with a poor turnover across goal for the Suns, resulting in a Cats goal. Lukosius marks and goals from the pocket, for his third. It's Geelong that leads by 3 at quarter-time though. Bruhn converts the set-shot, Geelong still without a blemish, despite the conditions. Gold Coast kicks away however, with 6 on the trot, out to a sizeable 33-point halftime lead. Stengle a good goal from 50 to give the Cats some life, but the Suns get the instant reply and kick further away, in a one-sided onslaught. Humphrey goals after the 3-quarter time siren, for his fourth, Gold Coast up 66. Both teams kick 7 goals apiece in the final term, the Suns home by 64 points. Gold Coast won the hit-outs, Geelong +4 in the clearances, the Suns though with significantly more of the footy and more effective disposal, while still applying 14 more tackles. Gold Coast with 17 more inside 50's, for 10 more scoring shots and had superb conversion. Rowell best afield, with 35 disposals, 8 clearances, 7 inside 50's, 10 tackles, 6 intercepts, 541 metres gained, 3 assists and a goal. Humphrey 16 disposals, 5 inside 50's, 5 tackles and a career-high 5 goals. Lukosius 16 disposals, 5 assists and 5 straight goals. Anderson 42 disposals, 37 effective, 6 inside 50's, 697 metres gained, 2 goals and an assist. Sexton 32 disposals, 6 inside 50's, 5 intercepts, 837 metres gained and an assist.
3. (Gcs) M. Rowell, 2. (Gcs) B. Humphrey, 1. (Gcs) J. Lukosius.
The NBA on TNT: NBA Playoffs - R2G5 - Mavericks vs Thunder (2024)
R2G5 - Mavs @ Thunder, May 15 2024.
The series tied at 2-2. Jones with two early 3's, including a Mavs 9-0 run. Dort just keeps shooting em... heh. Luka on song early too. Hardaway putting up bricks with Giddey on him, Dallas up 2 at the quarter break. Dort keeps trying to score and the Mavs go up double-digits. Doncic too good, Dallas up 10 at the half. The Mavs making the open 3's, Oklahoma missing. Doncic the contested step-back 3, Dallas up 12 going into the 4th. Luka en fuego, while Dort keeps thinking he's Ray Allen... Come on, man. The Mavs again save their challenge for another Gilgeous-Alexander dive, this time it's ridiculously not overturned. Jones with the block on a Holmgren 3-point attempt and the transition hoop. Dallas never challenged in this one, winning on the road to take a 3-2 series lead. The Mavs shot better from the field and 3, Oklahoma just 25% from deep. The Thunder took much better care of the ball, with just 6 turnovers, Dallas +13 on the boards. Doncic an efficient 31-point triple-double, 11 assists and 10 boards. Jones an efficient 19 points, 7 of 9 from the field, no turnovers. Lively 11 points and 10 boards off the bench. For Oklahoma, Gilgeous-Alexander 30 points, 8 assists, 6 boards and 2 steals.
3. (Dal) L. Doncic, 2. (Dal) D. Jones, 1. (Okc) S. G-Alexander.
The NBA on TNT: NBA Playoffs - R2G5 - Timberwolves vs Nuggets (2024)
R2G5 - Wolves @ Nuggets, May 14 2024.
Denver has pulled it back, now will they be the first team to win at home in this series. Conley out for the Timberwolves. Towns with a better start here, Jokic gets some soft calls early, the Nuggets up 2 at the quarter break. Minnesota have a slew of charge calls, Denver can't score either though. A lot of the turnovers by both teams unforced. Jokic the only one really making shots, the Nuggets up 6 at the half. Gobert certainly not displaying defensive player of the year impact. Gordon continuing to aggressively attack the rim with force. Minnesota hit the lead in the 3rd, but Denver quickly responds with a run and Jokic slaughters them late in the term, the Nuggets up 14 going into the 4th. Porter well contained, continuing on from last game, but Caldwell-Pope knocking down the 3-ball's. Denver gets it done comfortably, taking a 3-2 series lead, having won 3 on the trot. The Nuggets shot lights out, 55% from the field and 48% from 3, from just 19 attempts. Denver took better care of the ball and +5 on the boards. Jokic with an MVP super-efficient 40 points, 13 assists, 7 boards and 2 steals, with no turnovers. Caldwell-Pope an efficient 16 points, 4 of 5 from deep and 5 boards. Gordon 18 points, 5 assists and 10 boards, 5 offensive. For the Wolves, Gobert an efficient 18 points, 7 of 7 from the field, 11 boards, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Towns 23 points, 6 boards and 2 steals.
3. (Den) N. Jokic, 2. (Den) K. C-Pope, 1. (Den) A. Gordon.
The NBA on TNT: NBA Playoffs - R2G4 - Thunder vs Mavericks (2024)
R2G4 - Thunder @ Mavs, May 13 2024.
Dallas up 2-1. Dort picks up 2 cheap fouls and the Mavericks go up double-digits early and hold the Thunder to just 20 points in the 1st-term, up 10. Jalen Williams always challenges well at the rim, they'd be better served by Dort not jacking up 3's though. Oklahoma looking rattled, unable to find any easy offense. Holmgrem back to back blocks, retaining possession. Irving with the contested 3 to end the half, Dallas up 11. Have noticed Holmgren hasn't been given the ball to make a play once, he's a skillful difficult matchup, which can also open up the paint, I don't get it. Both teams struggling to score in the 3rd. The Mavs defense holding them in good stead. Another play where Gilgeous-Alexander goes into someone and takes a dive and the ref rewards him, a good challenge by Dallas though. The Mavs lead by just 4 however going into the 4th. Why does Dort keep shooting 3's, he's wide open for a reason, Gilgeous-Alexander keeping Oklahoma in touch. Holgrem hits the go ahead 3, the Thunder on a run. Dallas down 2 with the last possession, Doncic misses a free-throw and Holmgren doesn't. Oklahoma gets the win to even up the series, without being at their best. Neither team shot well, Dallas better from the field and 3, but poor from the line. The Thunder took better care of the ball, with just 7 turnovers, the Mavs +2 on the boards. Gilgeous-Alexander 34 points, 5 assists, 8 boards, 2 steals and 2 blocks, with no turnovers. Holmgren 18 points, 9 boards and 4 blocks, no turnovers. For the Mavericks, Washington 21 points and 12 boards, 4 offensive. Gafford 10 points, 8 boards and 3 blocks, no turnovers. Jones 17 points and 4 blocks.
3. (Okc) S. G-A, 2. (Okc) C. Holmgren, 1. (Dal) P. Washington.
When Time Ran Out... (1980)
Tired.
In When Time Ran Out, an active volcano threatens a south Pacific island resort and its guests as a power struggle ensues between the property's developer and a drilling foreman.
This one fails to engage the audience and is dull, despite the good cast. Similar to "The Poseidon Adventure," the film's strongest moments if any, are Newman with his drilling crew. The characters, dialogue and special effects are less than good, woeful to an extent. The antagonist's just soulless, without backstory. With people making poor decisions without reasoning, yeah I found the whole thing pretty sleep inducing.
The NBA on TNT: NBA Playoffs - R2G4 - Nuggets vs Timberwolves (2024)
R2G4 - Nuggets @ Wolves, May 12 2024.
Minnesota up 2-1. Edwards with a strong start, Towns though a poor start. The Wolves complaining a lot about getting fouled, haven't seen any. Denver goes on a 12-0 run and end the 1st-term up 5, Jokic getting it done. Holiday back to back 3's to start the 2nd and the Nuggets kick away with Jokic on the bench. Wow, Minnesota briefly going tower-tall with McDaniels at the two and he's a hell of a defender, 4-talls and Edwards. Jokic with the nice dime, then flushes it down the lane next trip. Caldwell-Pope with a big contested 3, a turnover leading to a Porter transition dunk and another turnover in which Murray knocks down the backcourt buzzer-beater to stop the Wolves comeback. A crazy finish to the half, unbelievable! Denver up 15. The Nuggets continue on in the 3rd. Gordon having a game too, 9 of 9 from the field. Edwards continues to keep Minnesota in range, Caldwell-Pope a nice block at the basket. Edwards cuts the deficit to 11 going into the 4th. The Nuggets manage to keep the Wolves at bay, despite Edwards, stopping the others. Denver gets it done, evening up the series, in a great game. Both teams shot well, the Nuggets lights out, 57% from the field. Both teams took care of the ball overall, despite Minnesota's blunders ending the half, the Wolves +11 on the boards. Gordon a very efficient 27 points, 11 of 12 from the field, 6 assists, 7 boards and 2 blocks. Jokic 35 points, 7 assists, 7 boards and 3 steals. Murray bigtime, with 19 points, 8 assists, 5 boards and 2 steals. For Minnesota, Edwards a super efficient 44 points, 5 assists, 5 boards and 2 steals. Conley 15 points and 9 assists, no turnovers.
3. (Min) A. Edwards, 2. (Den) A. Gordon, 1. (Den) N. Jokic.
The Last Stop in Yuma County (2023)
Could've been decent. Wasn't.
The Last Stop in Yuma County has a simple, proven premise and plot that works, but the subpar characterization and acting negate what there is to like about the film, add to that no backstory.
One the robbers for instance has his gun visibly hanging out his pants from the start, while they're trying to remain inconspicuous. The protagonist instead of just keeping his mouth shut, goes and decides to make it the problem of the waitress. Then you have the sheriff and deputy who for some reason seem like they're on the wrong set, misplaced out of a stupid comedy. It engages I guess, but pretty disappointing and forgettable in the end.

Both hold for a bit, then Humphries breaks with a 132 checkout to even it up. Humphries breaks again. Luke misses a match-dart and van Gerwen takes it to a deciding leg, Humphries with the throw. Humphries with the crowd eating out of the palms of his hands, opens with a 180 and an 11-darter, then breaks. Humphries then hits a 124 checkout, unchallenged thus far. Wow, he even takes out 85 to break again, not allowing Smith into the match, he's simply unplayable. After multiple holds, Van Gerwen gets the first break with a 10-darter in the 4th-leg. Both players turn into mere mortal's in the 5th-leg missing double after double, van Gerwen eventually taking it and then breaking to throw for the match. Van Gerwen wins it 6-1, Littler not showing up for this one. He's started to show a chink in his armour of late, getting frustrated at times and messing around a bit, despite finishing clear top of the table. Michael averaging 93 and just 24% on doubles, Littler averaging just 87 and 14% on doubles. Van Gerwen with four 180's to Littler's two, MVG with sixteen 100+ throws to Luke with just nine.
Darts: World Championships: 2024 Premier League Darts - Week 15 - Michael Smith vs Nathan Aspinall (2024)
2024 Premier League - W15 - M.Smith vs Aspinall.
Probably a must win for Smith, fighting for 4th-spot. Aspinall misses multiple break opportunities early on and it's Smith who gets the first break. Aspinall comfortably breaks back, but Smith with a 136 checkout though to get it right back and take a commanding lead. Aspinall misses and Smith takes the match, 6-3, closing the gap between the two on the Premier League table. Aspinall with the higher average of 99 despite losing, with just 21% on the doubles. Smith averaging 94 and 40% on the doubles. Smith with four 180's to Aspinall's three, Nathan twenty-one 100+ throws to Michael's seventeen.

Adel vs Bris, at Adelaide Oval.
The Crows coming in as favourite, with the Lions injuries to their small-forward and small-defender brigades. Cameron kicks the opener for Brisbane, Himmelberg the instant reply. Ah Chee back to back goals, the Lions up 3 at quarter-time. Curtin with some defensive mistakes for Adelaide. Dawson a good steal and the Crows get the transition goal, up 2 at the half. Brisbane gifts some opportunities to Adelaide with risky kicks out of defense, the Lions poor on goal once more. A close tight contest all game, the Crows up 1 at 3-quarter time. Berry goals from outside 50 and Brisbane kicks out to a handy lead, but Adelaide responds and hit the lead, Fogarty with back to back goals. Ah Chee clutch, slots his fourth. R2G3 - Nuggets @ Wolves, May 10 2024.
Minnesota up 2-0, the annoying Mark Jones in commentary. Towns with two early 3's and Edwards a quality block at the basket. Murray better here, the Nuggets up 8 at the quarter break, with the Wolves putting up just 20 points despite the start of Towns. Denver kicks out to a sizeable lead in the 2nd, with Murray continuing to roll and Jokic setting up, up 15 at the half. The Nuggets continue on, Gordon with back to back 3's and Porter another. Denver up 27 going into the last, with Jokic taking over and Minnesota make no inroad. It's a good response by the Nuggets, probably still gonna need game 4 though. Denver shot lights out, 54% from the field, 48% from 3. The Nuggets took better care of the ball and were +8 on the boards. Minnesota's defense of prior game's not restricting Denver here. Jokic with 24 points, 9 assists, 14 boards, 4 offensive, 3 steals and 3 blocks. Murray 24 points as well, 5 assists and 3 steals. Porter an efficient 21 points, 4 of 5 from deep. 2024 Premier League - W15 - Wright vs Littler.
A matchup here of clear top of the table verse the clear bottom. Littler though without a top rank, dominating the League and always the first walk on. Littler with just a 146 checkout in the opening leg and then starts with 6 triple-20's and breaks. Littler breaks again unopposed and takes a 5-0 lead. Gilgeous-Alexander the nice up and under, but the Mavericks get it done, evening up the series. Oklahoma shot marginally better from the field, Dallas much better from 3 at 49%. Frem vs Syd, at Optus Stadium.
McCartin out for the Swans, Darcy Fremantle. McDonald kicks the opener for Sydney with a good contested goal. O'Meara butchers his second consecutive shot, Walker finally gets the Dockers on the board. Sydney leads by 7 at quarter-time, with a wasteful Fremantle. Warner goals from outside 50 to start the 2nd and Amartey with consecutive contested marks and goals. Freo turning it over and the Swans kick away, without a blemish still. Fyfe getting plenty of it, but butchering his kicks. A smashing, Sydney still without a miss, up 40 at the half. Treacy robbed of a clear goal, Voss robbed as well, not helping their inaccuracy. The Dockers make no inroad, down 43 at 3-quarter time and 48 by the final siren. The Swans dominated the hit-outs, Freo +1 in clearances, Sydney with more of footy via kick and 10 more tackles applied. The Swans had 5 more inside 50's, for 3 more scoring shots, but the conversion between the teams stark. Hayward best afield again, with an assist and 4 goals, same as last week. Friday Night Football: Thursday Night Football: Round 9 - Carlton vs Melbourne (2024)
Carl vs Melb, at the MCG.
Wet Conditions. Walsh kicks the opener for Carlton and Pittonet follows from a ruck free. Martin takes a good aerial grab and converts, then McKay marks and slots it. De Koning goals from distance, Melbourne not just goalless, but scoreless at quarter-time, the Blues up 30. Petracca gets the Dees on the board and then soon kicks another. A soft free yields Melbourne another, but Carlton still able to match them for the term, up 31 at the half. Curnow with a good snap around the body, Petracca a contested goal, but the Blues with a response every time. Curnow up the ground a lot in this one. Petracca goals again to cut the deficit to 22 going into 3-quarter time. An excellent sliding goal-line assist by Viney and then Petracca slots another, Melbourne back within 7. Gawn goals from 50 and it's game on. Carlton lucky to get home by a point in the end, trying to hold onto a lead. You have to have players forward and going forward, otherwise every time you kick it, it's surely coming right back. The Demons handily won the hit-outs, Carlton +2 in the clearances, with an even amount of the footy, Melbourne 18 more tackles applied. The Dees with 20 more inside 50's, for 3 more scoring shots, the Blues superb conversion though. Petracca best afield for the losing side, with 21 disposals, 6 inside 50's, 7 tackles, 574 metres gained, 2 assists and a career-high 5 goals. Neal-Bullen 23 disposals, 5 clearances, 5 inside 50's, 12 tackles and 6 intercepts. Viney 21 disposals, 5 clearances, 7 inside 50's, 12 tackles, 507 metres gained and 2 assists. Weitering 17 disposals, 2 contested marks and 8 intercepts.
3. (Mel) C. Petracca, 2. (Carl) P. Cripps, 1. (Mel) A. N-Bullen.
Chief of Station (2024)
Dull.
In Chief of Station, learning that the death of his wife was not an accident, a former CIA Station Chief is forced back into the espionage underworld, teaming up with an adversary to unravel a conspiracy that challenges everything he thought he knew.
The film improves a little in the 2nd-half, but it's bland and generic, without grit or suspense and the story certainly never intrigues. Aaron Eckhart's not lead material and there were no twists because we could see everything coming. Another point, Ben's gets his son with no experience to face the assassins straight on and shoot at them, surely he'd be better off being the shooter and the son driving, but why didn't the assassins hit him.
The NBA on TNT: NBA Playoffs - R2G1 - Cavaliers vs Celtics (2024)
R2G1 - Cavs @ Celtics, May 7 2024.
Allen out for Cleveland, Porzingis Boston. Can't see the Cavs being a factor in this series, but that's why they play the games, as the Celtics showed getting knocked out last year. Boston up double-digits early, but Cleveland hit the lead with a barrage of 3's. The Celtics end the term well though, up 6 at the quarter break and then 10 at the half. Tatum with a good block to start the 3rd and makes the nice pass to Holiday for the 3 the trip down. Holiday soon hits another and Brown asserting his physical dominance on the smaller Cavs guards. Pritchard with a buzzer-beater 3 to end the term, Boston up 15. They extend the margin in the 4th, in a one-sided affair, taking a 1-0 series lead. I feel like the Celtics need to give these other teams a handicap... it just ain't fair. Boston shot much better from the field and 3, Cleveland just 26% from there. Neither team turned the ball over at all, with 11 collectively between them, the Celtics dominant on the boards +17. Brown with an efficient 32 points and 6 boards, just 1 turnover. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
Fun and better than the prior film.
In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age.
Wow, so much negativity, these reviews are messed up. I had the opposite experience as usual and found it to be an enjoyable fun film, with a few lulls here or there, but plenty of laughs, the stay-puft marshmallows every time. McKenna Grace remains a solid lead, along with Paul Rudd and there's a quality threat present. Maybe too many characters, but maybe for the better, surely they could find a laugh or integral scene for Bill Murray though.
The NBA on TNT: NBA Playoffs - R2G2 - Timberwolves vs Nuggets (2024)
R2G2 - Wolves @ Nuggets, May 6 2024.
Minnesota taking the opening game, Gobert out for this one. A very good start by Gordon. I like that the ref didn't compound his clear mistake by tec'ing up Malone, the Wolves up 8 at the quarter break though. Minnesota's defense troubling Denver, they Wolves on a run and kick the lead out to 20. The Nuggets rattled and Edwards starts to get going. Reid giving them a punch off the bench as well, Minnesota out to sizeable 26-point halftime lead. Alexander-Walker dominating the matchup with Murray, the Wolves up 22 going into the 4th. Denver makes no inroad, a big win by the Timberwolves on the road without Gobert, to take a 2-0 series lead. Minnesota shot much better, Denver shooting just 35% from the field. The Nuggets also with as many turnovers as assists, +8 on the boards. Alexander-Walker with excellent defense, 14 points, 4 of 7 from deep off the bench, 6 boards and 3 blocks. Towns an efficient 27 points, 12 boards and 2 blocks. Edwards an efficient 27 points as well, 7 assists and 2 steals. Anderson 8 assists, 9 boards, 7 offensive and 2 steals. Reid 14 points off the bench, 4 of 8 from deep, 5 boards and 4 blocks.
