Polite Society (2023)
OMG, Bollywood Meets Fight Club... for Chicks!!
I just love this movie. I wish there were many more movies like this being made. A step in the right direction, this is!
Yes, the sisterhood in films has progressed beyond whiny wives and clingy girlfriends, but not enough-not by a long shot.
The thing I loved the most about this movie was the way these young women supported each other, plus-maybe especially-their disagreements, and reactions to them, aren't stereotypical of the way young females are portrayed in film and television.
I would love to see more women depicted as strong, unstoppable, single-minded fighters... especially when it's in aid of rescuing your sister, literal or figurative.
I hope these writers and filmmakers produce more... a lot more.
The young women in Polite Society are going to have wonderful careers-they're all incredible! I especially love towards the end when Kovacs busts into the room upstairs to rescue Ria and her friends. Just. Fabulous!!
Legends of Tomorrow (2016)
I'm Sorry It's Over
While season 7 wasn't my favorite season of this series, and in spite of the fact I didn't start watching it until after it was cancelled, I'll be very sorry to see this series go. It's silly, funny, a bit zany, and sometimes feels like it doesn't know what it wants to be, but it's one among very few DC series which has strong, impressive female characters without them being created to fulfill the "male gaze," and without feeling like the characters were created to check a box, so to speak.
They've managed to steer the series with one of those strong female characters at the helm, without feeling like "chick-com." They've also included great LGBTQ+ characters and storylines-something they tried to do with Batwoman but failed miserably. Some writers have difficulty creating strong leads who just happen to be gay, or disabled, or... but this series pretty much nails it.
It doesn't take itself too seriously, and although sometimes the characters, smart characters, do unimaginably dumb things, creating paradoxes they sometimes do, but often don't recognize as paradoxes, if you don't take it too seriously either, you'll enjoy the ride.
It's too damn bad the CW didn't know what to do with it. Maybe a better network or streaming service can pick it up. Either way, if you haven't had a chance to watch the series yet, what are you waiting for?
The Gilded Age (2022)
Irritated by Issues with the Costumes. Otherwise...
The bodices of many of the women's costumes have construction issues-at first I thought one of the actresses had lost a breast to breast cancer, then realized it was just bad bodice construction and many of the other actresses' costumes had the same issues! If it weren't for that distraction, I'd have given it 8 stars.
The cast is great, most of the scenes are shot beautifully-a couple of the outdoor street scenes seem to have been rushed, or maybe they didn't notice the lighting issues-the sets are incredible, and the costumes, and hair and make-up are well done... with the exception of the construction issues.
However, I only noticed these issues in the third episode, I'm quite enjoying it and I usually don't enjoy American period pieces as much as I do this one. It makes sense, as it's Julian Fellowes, but it's also the great cast who seem to have meshed really well... Here's hoping for a Season Two!
