Uwharrie (2012)
Fun and a bit silly
Alright, I have to admit that I think I'm finally over the 'shaky cam' movies. It seems like one person had a hit with it and suddenly it's everyone's idea of scary. Well, there's a new movie from Christopher Flowers, Uwharrie, and, even though it's shaky cam, I can't decide if it's supposed to be scary or funny.
Two friends are taking a camping trip to celebrate one of their upcoming wedding. So, naturally, they decide to document the whole event on camera
.it's perfectly natural! As they head out into the woods, first they see what they think might be a bear, but it's on its back legs. Then, they're accosted by frat boys and the next thing you know, Bigfoot is on the rampage and killing everyone in the middle of the woods
.and there's a lot more people in the middle of the woods than you might imagine!
At first, I was sure that Flowers and company wanted me to take this movie seriously and be scared. Then, after an uncountable amount of 'dude's and 'awesome's later, I became convinced that maybe they were trying to be funny and campy. Then, in the end, I couldn't decide, it could be someone's bad idea seeing fruition, or it could be someone's idea to spoof these terrible 'homemade' movies
.I'm going to assume that it's the later, and that Flowers and company had their tongues firmly in their cheeks and got what they were getting
otherwise, some of what was going on is just to absurd to be believable!
The City (2009)
The mind of a killer can be infectious!
The first time I saw James Vogel's The City, I have to admit, I enjoyed it. So, why do another review of the same movie...well, because, it's not really the same movie. Vogel has reedited his movie and added some scenes and taken away others to make this great indie movie even better.
The story remains basically the same, Scott is a frustrated screenwriter who needs to have some 'darker' experiences to flesh out his current work. He meets T.K. who's filled with 'dark' and is more than willing to share. The two soon find themselves fast friends and are up to no good! I won't go into much further detail.
Well, in this 'director's cut', the action remains largely the same, but pared down quite a bit. The action feels tighter that story moves faster and Vogel adds an ending that will make your skin absolutely crawl!
Who's There? (2011)
Who's There...In The Woods!
Camping is something that we all know about, but a lot of us don't ever do. And that's thanks to movies like Friday The 13th and others, where we all learned that when you go camping, odds are that you'll be murdered in some horrible way. Well, a new movie by Pau Maso, Who's There?, will have you putting that tent back in the garage and hitting the old couch! Here's the story: Ashlee and Natalie are on a camping trip, just out to see some nature and enjoy a quiet break from school. When they cross paths with Christensen, Natalie has a funny feeling...which will soon come to fruition. It seems that Christensen has more than camping on his mind, and if someone has to die as the result...so much the better! Who's There? is an excellent short that takes advantage of its lower budget, there's no blood, and yet there's a horrific murder at the end...on that's so much worse because we just hear the description and the initial screams! Maso has crafted a great short that really leaves you wondering what the hell just went on. From the beginning, straight through to the end, you'll be confused and yet glued to your seat to see what happens next. I'm hoping that there's either a longer version in the future...or a sequel that will take us further into the world of Christensen...it's a dark world, but it looks well worth exploring.
I'm giving Who's There? 4 out of 4 cigars, it's dark, it's mysterious and it's totally worth your time!
